Brazil is mostly Black by our standards, St. Domingue is mostly Black, as is Belize and other parts of the Spanish Caribbean. there are significant Black populations in Cuba and PR as well. you don't really start to find a lot of Whites as we typically define them until you reach the Southern states of Brazil and Argentina. In the U.S. Blacks are characterized by having strong African ancestry.. If this is the defining factor then many Hispanics share this definition.

I have done tremendous study on this subject already. If you are not convinced of the Racial make up of Brazil (the largest Lat. That is a really good point but unlike the Americans that you speak of, I have traveled outside of this country. I agree that culture has a strong bearing on Color but that was not the point I was trying to emphasize. One thing is common in most Western Hemisphere nations: there is a clear definition of European descent and a clear Definition of non-European descent. If you take this into account then you will find that you are either side of a proverbial fence, regardless of the country.

that is not true at all. Brazil is mostly Black by our standards, St. Domingue is mostly Black, as is Belize and other parts of the Spanish Caribbean. there are significant Black populations in Cuba and PR as well. you don't really start to find a lot of Whites as we typically define them until you reach the Southern states of Brazil and Argentina. In the U.S. Blacks are characterized by having strong African ancestry.. If this is the defining factor then many Hispanics share this definition.

That's all good; I majored in Philosophy, specializing in Social and political philosophy and Brazilian sociology.. my fiance is Brazilian and I go to Lat. America all of the time. I have done tremendous study on this subject already. If you are not convinced of the Racial make up of Brazil (the largest Lat. American country btw) you should check out a book entitled "Race in Another America". the situation of race in Brazil is so fubar i am already planning a thesis topic.

you obviously got these figures from Wikipedia or the CIA so-called "fact book".. this census information is incorrect because it does not account for the American Standard of White and Black.. notice my earlier comment.. in the Spanish Caribbean you have a lot of miscegenation that includes mostly blacks mixing with whites. however, accounting history when the Black populations eventually became dominants, those of Africans became the most common phenotypes. Hence, they are mostly Black.

Also, in the earlier colonial periods of Brazil there were only Potuguese males.. that was the extent of the European population. They were notorious for raping the female Africans brought as slave and the Native Tupi and other Indians. So, in the early history of Brazil you had either mixed, black or Indian offspring there were no pure European as could be found in North America. That is why there are more Blacks in Brazil but in the southern states there were German and Italian immigrants.

there is a benefit to being percieved as a "White Nation". Obviously there is some degree of respect that comes with such a status on the world stage; that alone is reason enough for any society to claim to be mostly white. look at the DR for example; most of them are more chocolaty than me but claim their nation to be more "westernized" than African. look at the people in power there; they are mostly light-skinned or white but just as in Brazil, that doesn't reflect the general population.

bullshit.. only like 20-30% of Brasil is white by our North American standards.. most are negro or Pardo and like 2% are Asian mostly from Japan.. Salvador, one of the largest Cities in Brasil, is almost 80% Black and has very strong African cultural roots. That is a really good point but unlike the Americans that you speak of, I have traveled outside of this country. I agree that culture has a strong bearing on Color but that was not the point I was trying to emphasize. One thing is common in most Western Hemisphere nations: there is a clear definition of European descent and a clear Definition of non-European descent. If you take this into account then you will find that you are either side of a proverbial fence, regardless of the country.
