Eurovision long time ago..there were better songs and better singers! The one who had voice went to eurovision but now if u are sexy and beautifull everyone votes for u! Best regards from moldavia!
This is one of only a handful of Eurovision winners that has any musical merit to it whatsoever. Imagine ... a fun, catchy, intelligent pop song which has dated well!
Most Eurovision crap makes me cringe when I think about it.
Here was the begining. A story that thrilled us; two couples with magic and talent to give and share. Too sad that they separated! But despite the years there are still ABBA fans around the world. We love you guys! FOR EVER! Greetings from Colombia!
the score board could have been a bit bigger!,any how that was the best ESC winner ever with anne maria david 2nd. Also was the 1977 esc broadcast live from england? because there was a strike by the bbc that year.
I'm American and just as proud because I had the good taste to appreciate this gloriously talented group. In a time of musical mediocrity these talented people harkened back to an era when excellence and success were linked and not lonely strangers. You certainly should be proud.
you do understand that the whole eastern Europe hasn't got as many ESC-wins as western Ireland and Luxembourg together.
And in past 15 years there has been like.. what.. 14 new winning nations? Is that really such a bad thing? (Of course if you're Irish, British or Swedish person who are used to the "fact" that they are always the leading nations in this race..)
wow eurovision has really changed over the years! i mean u just dunt get acts like that anymore well us brits ent exacly always winners are we! AHHHH WELL! Gd song
I love ABBA but i have a question: who is the stylist who have dressed the 2 poor girls? The blonde one seems to came from Star Trek and the other one from the Oktoberfest in Munchen!!!By the way,,,,,,ABBA for ever!
The dresser of ABBA is a teacher at my school. His name is Olle, cant recall his last name though. He's about the same age as the members of ABBA, always with a hard tan & he's homosexual. Thats who.
this song has all the flavour of mine most beautiful years.. at that time I didn't appreciated in the proper way, but this song emerge from the my memory today overbearing.
I suggest to search and look at the movie "to get her"
it used to be a few countries singing, see who does the best, vote, they win. now its shag them vote hack the contest, get some stupid host on, then its every country in the world screaming boogies! then whoever wins commits suicide!
The person who dared mention Celine Dion and ABBA in one breath should be taken out at dawn to be shot. Celine Dion has a good voice, is a beautiful woman, a faithful wife, sings her own songs very well, but ruins the songs she covers. Also, Dion tries to sound like African-American singers. Bad idea. ABBA was, in my view, the best band of the 70s, along with Queen.
I love ABBA, and I love the fact that Eurovision back then wasn't about having a big show, but a great song! And oh, those '70s-clothes! I was born too late!!
Niilani, you are right, the ABBA are the only winners of ESC who made it big afterwards. They did it because of their talent and hard work. And let's not forget, they were already very successful individually even before the ESC. They are truly talented.
eFlyFowler, how can you mention the God-awful celine dion and wonderful Abba in the same sentence? I'd rather gouge my eyes out with a blunt instrument than listen to dion for one minute!
* Waterloo is still my favourite song from Abba. I was only 11 or 12 when I saw this on TV and I was crazy about Abba for years.
Serge Gainsborough (as composer), Sandy Shaw, Brotherhood of Man, Teach-In, Celine Dion, Dana International etc. also found international success after ESC.
Margus, let's say the truth...nobody, except for them became so huge after ESC. Celine Dion started her carrier in US and became succesfull there at first. The rest of your mentions were fleeting one-hit-wonders.
Let say the truth -- very small number of artists have achieved such commercial success like ABBA. With or without ESC. And I am sure, the win in ESC was just a small step for them. Just like for Celine Dion.
Why are they using the old jury system that year? The year before they were using the more modern system when the winning country got at least 100 points and why was it not hold in the country which the previous country won?
No, they were not using the modern system in 1973. From 1971-1973 they used a system where each country had two jurors who each gave every song a mark from 1 to 5. This was very unfair because the countries gave out different numbers of points in total. Therefore that voting system was scrapped and they returned to the old one in 1974.
The modern one was use for the first time in 1975, although it wasn't until 1980 that the votes were cast in ascending order. In 75-79 the votes were cast in starting order. Votings for 75, 76, 77 and 79 (and many more) can be found on youtube.
Yes indeed, in the 70s the EBU really started to scratch its head over the voting system - in 1975 our familiar system (minus the voting order) was introduced, and was immediately considered such a fair success that it's stuck ever since. Hooray for that! :)
