@SexayLayD We have to remember that with animals, as with humans, a 'song' is merely a different form of communication; and in the case of gibbons, it's certainly possible that well-timed cries and hoots in consort with those of other gibbons could be considered singing. When I saw them in the wild (separate from this video), it was clear that they were communicating with each other in a way that essentially created a form of music, but I couldn't see any indication that it was intended as such
beautiful creatures but can be kinda sad to see them out of their element. Saw lots of animals thankful only a couple gibbons in the cities used to back a living from all the farang aka Western tourist who want to take picks and play with the animals. Its sad but most of these animals are on some sort of street sedative to make them calm in public. all in all super intelligent animals and Thailand, Laos..... some of my favorite countries
If you have a problem determining between monkeys and apes, it's quite easy...This is how I learned....search "veggietales monkey song" and that will clear up any confusion...
@Ansonidak wrong. When B & C comes from A, B is neither C or A and C is neither B or A. What you can say is we came from Catarrhini, which is neither OWMs or apes, but a precusor to both, a higher primate. we are not monkeys, but we are closely related.
Gibbons are the best. They are extremely intelligent. I remember being in Thailand and hearing them make their loud howling sound (not really howling but more of a "whuuuuuuuppp!!" sound). I love these creatures.
@ponybcurtis Yeah! I was lucky enough to see them in the wild when we went on an excursion at 5am in the jungle (Gibbon Experience in Laos), and their hoots and hollers are incredibly loud, even in the massive expanse of the jungle.
Hell that's Tyrone the watermelon wrangler from down the street...he bums cigarettes and blows his welfare check on lottery tickets down at the corner store.
i can't for when i'm older cause i'd love to have one of those little small white monkeys pretty sure they have black faces though anyways also i'd like to know if somebody knows what i'm talking about can you please tell me what the name of this monkey is that i'm talking about?
@SuperTigerNo1 There is a group of "lesser apes" consisting mainly of gibbons and then there are the "great apes" consisting of chimps, gorillas, orangutans, and humans
@Jackolyne Technically, yes... but only very very distantly. they're in the family Hylobatidae (lesser apes), whereas humans, gorillas, chimps and orangutans are part of the family Hominidae (great apes). Taxonomy goes like; Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.... so we're similar up to the Family level.
@TaySharpie That's not that distant is it? Even among primates they're pretty close to us. It's funny how gibbons are walk two feet much better than other great apes except for humans.
@TaySharpie we are not apes we share a common ancestor. apes and human evolved from an early mammal named homoerectus. it evolved in to homosapien, neanderthal and apes.
@mariofanoo1 humans are technically apes because if you look at the common ancestor of the great apes and humans, that common ancestor should be classified as an ape, and so should we be.
@mariofanoo1 What?! Only 3 subspecies have evolved Homo erectus. Homo means "human". It's already a human. Not one ape except US has evolved from them.
So cool! Everytime when me and my Dad went to Chiang Mai (wich was every Year) we had to stop one Day at the Zoo, and the most Time I spent with the Gibbons. I love them! Nice Video brings back Memories
weird, I went to Chiang Mai Zoo in 2008 and the gibbons were all locked in small cages, they didnt have this awesome big enclosure! was this at chiang mai zoo?
@meg88vb This was at the 'night safari' that was about 10-15 minutes down the highway from the main area of Chiang Mai, they had a pretty nice spot with more open areas for animals to roam in. The main feature were the tram rides through the animal habitats at night time. (most of these animals are nocturnal or only up and about in the cooler evenings)
Awesome creatures, with legendary agilty saw a cracking short film on them in India on a kids programe, one of the most entertaining afternoos I ever had was watching the Macaques on Gibralter - superb stuff.
boo! zoos suck. This gibbon should be in the wild in a family unit. not being gawked at by moronic tourists all day, every day. plus, gibbons pretty much never go to the ground in the wild. it's un-natural behaviour.
You weren't there ok! Hahaha jk. Yeah you may be right, but I definitely started bobbing before he did, and he was looking right at me when he began to bounce.
yes they resemble most monkeys... but that doesn't make them monkeys. they are called lesser apes because they are smaller than chimps, gorillas, humans but they are definitely apes. the main difference is that they don't have tails, like apes (unlike most monkeys).
Thanks for the info! I'm no expert on apes or monkeys of any kind, but I do love how similar they are to humans. I think we could learn a lot from their behaviour towards each other given that it's soomewhat of a simplified human existance.
Thanks. I have a personal crusade to explain this to people, glad to know I'm not alone. Although, to reference your post, isn't symphalangus a member of the hylobatidae family?
Right right. I mean, symphalangus syndactylus is a siamang. There's debate whether there is a siamang subspecies... but I digress. The only reason I asked is because the way I read your post the first time, it made it sound like you were separating a siamang from gibbons, when they (siamangs) are considered a gibbon too. Maybe it's just how I read it. *shrug* Regardless, they're certainly extraordinary creatures.
Parkour is awesome! nice dude. I've done a little myself, but people in Toronto, Canada where I live are sort of out of the loop... you get the weirdest looks.
Really? As far as I've heard, Toronto has one of the biggest parkour communities around. And you can just forget the looks. There is no point in conforming to the ridiculous, arbitrarily-based prejudices of society, especially when it inhibits your freedom.
If your actions are ethically just, and not illegal, then there is no reason to allow society to tie you down.
THAT IS THE CREEPIEST ANIMAL ALIVE.. the way they walk gives me chills up and down my spine.. omg i will have nightmares forever due to these creepy ass things!
So funny you mention that! I thought it was really creepy at first as well, but after watching them for a while it started to seem human rather than foreign. I reccommend checking them out in a zoo if you can.
Aww :( I wish I was a gibbon! Lol, looks like so much fun! I saw a baby gibbon on tv, was too cute :D it was all clumsy and flailing it's arms about, haha! It was like a wacky wavy inflatable flailing arm tube man :)
