At 39, I started cycling. I love cycling, but whole idea of needing equipment didn't vibe w/ my sense of freedom. Like swimming, I need a pool or a beach. With cycling comes flat tires... tools... upgrading pedals, tubes, tires, rims and seats. All of this paraphernalia and cost.
Then I started running. It didn't require anything more than I already had. At 40, I ran my first marathon.
@proteanview you should try rock climbing. you can do it with equipment but there is also the form of naked climbing - where you climb by yourself without any safety equipment, just you and the rocks under your hands, big sense of freedom but also can be quite dangerous.
@AssHoleThunder Yeah they screwed up the quote thats not what emil zatopek said it was "if you want to win something race 100m if you want to experience something run a marathon." you get just a good experience miling
@franciscccccc finishing a marathon is far from the ultimate test, but racing one is a different story because the marathon is just long enough truly push endurance, but not so long that raw speed is no longer a factor. It is therefore a better test of fitness than a race that requires pure endurance such as a ultra-marathon or a shorter race that only requires raw speed, it is essentially the longest distance at which one can race in the traditional sense.
@greathouse202 Agreed. It is also one of the purest and most basic expressions of human movement, which adds to the 'ultimate' factor. Cycling involves a machine, and humans are generally pretty lame in the water. Not that we can't do it though, it's just not as natural as running
@TheQuietObserver01 Marathon stopped being the ultimate challenge when Ironman came along. Imagine to do what a marathon runner does plus swim 3.86 km and bike 18 km. Almost makes a marathon seem puny :)!
The DVD can be bought anywhere in the world including free post and packaging. google 'running to the limits alex vero' where you can buy it though paypal. It has a great extra features on the training behind it.
I've run ultra marathon and a couple of half ironman before and I can assure you that the marathon is the hardest by far. It's never the distance it is the speed that gets you. It's the perfect distance to really test what your made of. The full length documentary goes into detail about this.
if you want to run a marathon then start your training today because tomorrow will always be tomorrow and it will never come. and always remember age is just a number as long as your feet can walk, jog, or run you can finish the race...
Marathons are tough but ironmans cover way more distance and 2 other events. That's the true test of endurance. How can u say that ironmans aren't the true test of endurance if u run one after biking 112 miles and swimming 2 miles?
@avidMTB anyone with a good base of training should be able to complete either a marathon or an ironman without too much difficulty, something being a true test of endurance is irrelevant. Look at the times in ironman, anyone looking to just finish one (as in sub-17 hours) can get away with running a 6 hour marathon if they make the bike cut off, that's effectively a long walk the same is true of running a 4 hour marathon. what is on a whole different level is racing either a marathon or ironman
@the12thdiciple Exactly! This is y I tell people around that I fear a 10K more than marathon. I have 2 bad experiences over 20 years. Worst experience is a half marathon: nightmare with blisters half the size palm. Calve cramps etc. But if untrained, 4 sure marathon even slow will be very painful compared 2 10K.
I have not done long runs for ages and starting to get ready 4 ironman scares me a lot, having sub 1230 in mind, not crazy good but for my level crazy enough to be my biggest challenge.
@Jeremiahparis But yes, this is it, one can always do more, there are also those 24 hours records, 7 days records etc... The size of the challenge depends on your own ability. For a large part of the population, the marathon is indeed likely to be the ultimate challenge. It will be hard enough to reach this limit/surf on it. Even 10k may be that limit for people who are not into sport. These things are relative and this is why I always find those superlative words irrelevant.
Ironmen are jacks of 3 trades. Don't get me wrong, they're awesome and it's my dream to do one, but they are masters of none of the events. For so many reasons the marathon is an event that touches the limits of the body and genetics. Long enough to break people mentally and empty all your glycogen. Fast enough to be impressive. Specialised enough to have true elite level. Then you can race 40,000 at a time. Marathon's are freaking amazing, you run like crazy and just never stop.
I think you morons are all missing the point. It doesn't matter how fast someone claims to be able to run a distance, you can't put it in a movie and call it Running to the limits, and claim these athletes are doing anything spectacular, when people are running 4 times as far and barely any slower, or when people or doing events that are just as draining as a marathon for 5-6 hours before running a marathon and doing it at almost marathon pace. What I've done is meaningless, you just wanna cry.
@GG4S3xTo Hatin, you probably couldn't even break three hours. No disrespect to the Elites in the Ironman, but to you sir I have this to say: After the "amateur" (2 30- 2 50) marathoners have passed their time and are pushing forty, ya know what they do for fun? They go and do an Ironman for the hell of it. Oh and they do the marathon part in around 3 10. To run the speed we do for a marathon, takes an intense amount of training I'm sure you could never grasp. Show some respect
@pharry4life Thats as stupid as someone who ran a marathon telling a sprinter to run a 4 minute miles if they think the mile is so easy. You're fucking stupid and Marathons are cake...nuff said. I run a marathon in 3:45 at the end of an ironman so I'd say you don't have a horse in this fight noob.
@GG4S3xTo 345... he said 230 and thats not a fair comparison because marathons and ironmans are similar because of the distance , but mile is a mid distance and sprinters dont train for that... so before you say it's easy take in what he said actually try running one km at 3 min and you'll know what they have to keep up for the full 42 ... "noob"
@jackfin321 It's not a joke moron. The Marathon is the sprint endurance running event. Like a sprint triathlon. It's just runners rarely advance beyond it.
@GG4S3xTo marathoning is not a sprint endurance race, it takes non of the same talents as a sprint..at all... there are longer distances but really im not gonna argue anymore with some triathlete who thinks they know running because they waste a full day running at glacial pace, congrats you did an iron man, you deserve a medal.. your no different than any other triathlete or marathoner.... and if marathon is a sprint what do you consider the 5km because its defined as a distance event... moron
@jackfin321 It's probably a good idea that you stop as you know jack shit jackfin, and I'm guessing haven't run anything worth mentioning to begin with...cheers noob! Marathons are easy....fat people run them....I'm sure your mom has run one in her time!
@jackfin321 You're aware of the difference between a sprint endurance event like say, a sprint distance triathlon or a marathon, and a sprint, like the 100m or 5000k right? Ah probably not, right noob? I mean you tried athletics in high school and it didn't work for you...you've probably learned a lot though through the bags of potato chips and hours watching athletes on tv though so I don't doubt your dedication to learning what we do...you've just still got more to learn. Want some dorritos?
@GG4S3xTo you seriously think im some middle aged fatass who wastes his time watching youtube videos about what i never did?? cmonn were not all like you :)
@jackfin321 Now you just sound like a moron who has no idea what he believes. First you acknowledge I'm an ironman, then you think I'm a middle aged fatass. The fact that you want me to be now that I've insulted you probably means you are over weight and long to run a marathon. It's ok man I believe in you! Just keep putting one foot in front of the other, Marathons are easy....you can do it!
@jackfin321 I think we have all gathered that GG4 is talking out of his arse, as he seems to think that after an ironman he can still beat Haile Gebrselassie's PB for a mile by a huge ammount and almost break the WR after an iroman too, (just 3 seconds off).
Don't waste anymore of your time talking to somebody like him. You know you have won when he says that a marathon is a sprint. There are thousands of roaches like him on the internet who want to believe in a life they could never lead.
While the marathon is an enduring race that I have never completed, I am aware of ultra marathons which are actually a more enduring task, because they can be as much as 50 miles long. I still would love to see this documentary.
The ultimate test to the human limits is not the marathon. The ultimate test is the Ultra Marathon. Ask David Goggins.

Wrong. The limit in running is cardiac arrest, heart attack or a major injury. Never run to the limits. Know your limits and keep it healthy.
