  • Wonderful. Utterly wonderful.

  • 48 seconds before any sound ???

  • overwhelming

  • Apparently, since its release in 1932 this recording has never been out of print. Its easy to understand why. I was introduced to this glorious performance by a cultured girlfriend one romantic winters afternoon many years ago, and it is for her perfect taste and timing that I am entirely grateful, for it opened many other musical doors for me. Thanks again E.B.!

  • In a documentary, Menuhin recalls meeting Elgar in the summer of 1932. After rehearsing just a portion of the 1st Movement - in preparation for the later full-scale recording - , Elgar said, "It's going to be wonderful - it's a lovely day and I'm going to the races," and he took the young Menuhin with him to the horse races. The commentator says that when the entire concerto was later recorded, with Elgar conducting, the young Menuhin played it "with every fibre of his 16-year-old soul."

  • I just watched this in concert two days ago. Gabriel Ng as the soloist. I was greatly charmed. =)

  • Yehudi Menuhin gave me the Elgar violin concerto on vinyl after working on his school during 1980 and 1981. I dearly cherish this gift and the music played by this inspiring and dedicated phenomenon.

Thanks for sharing the concerto on YouTube.

  • Quite a good recording for 1932!

  • @bobareebop the recordings in 1932 were perfect, specially those made by HMV

  • Love this recording! Anyway, as mentioned earlier, it's not exactly rare - I have the CD actually... EMI 7243 5 66979 2 8, paired with the Enigma Variations.

  • And that shows what speed Elgar intended for the concerto! I burst off tears. Oh my god, this is so much like I love this... First chords slow, see, and then that energy! I can feel my ears hit the roof. This is treasure.

  • Albert Sammons was a cellist, wasn't he?

  • @petrof4056 He was a violinist according to Wiki.

  • @petrof4056 no but gofriller was a cello maker?

  • Respond to this video... this is the most lucious recording ever made of this concerto, the warmth and heart felt playing of the 16 year old Menuhin compares to no one!!

  • @petrof4056

I have heard just before the version of Albert Samons, violinist;its on the'2ndviolinist'channel.I don't agree that he gives intensivety to the concerto;Menuhin does!Is so marvellous..Thank you for this sharing..

    Regards

  • Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!

  • I have this on vinyl. It's available on CD at Amazon for $8.97, $1.99 used.

  • I thought Kreisler didn't want to record it and it was the other way - I believe Menuhin came to Elgar.

Anyway, this recording isnt THAT rare.

  • @Sinfoniette If I remember correctly Menuhin was 16 at the time and Elgar was quite impressed with the prodigy (as he was at that time)... Amazing how Menuhin could have played it perfectly at this age.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this recording

  • Superb!! Sometimes I think this is the most beautiful of all violin concertos, and Menuhin's performance with the composer here is surely the gold standard...sound is remarkable for a 77-year-old recording! Thanks for posting this treasure!

  • Vraiment incroyable 1
