joe satriani teached steve vai, kirk hammett, and prob many others....i love his style of playing and melodies....i grew up listening to his stuff albums like the extremist, flying in a blue drem, surfing with the alien, crystal planet, etc.
@anthonya13 You probably found them in the 4 months since you posted, but.... Crystal Planet, Made of Tears, and Searching are excellent ones to look into as well. (keeping with the "melodic"/laid back feel)
understand that it starts with the arrangement he is not tryint to be a speed merchant as most of the melody is mid neck and the amp is not distorted to hell and back he is also using a wah to modulate the signal and prob mult micing the amp

when i recor an amp with 2 or more speakers ill use 3 mics. A sure sm57 and a senn heiser md 421close miked plus my akg as a room mic
