I downloaded win8 last night and played around with it. And less than an hour later I removed it. Think I'm going to wait till win9 before I go from win7.
It´s all very beautiful, but I want to see its speed before it has all that my PC holds today... Office, Corel X5, COD3, BF3, Batman (both), and 25 other programs.
I rather still use Windows 7 then that (windows 8) because is just like the 360 and the phone why do they need to have the same thing make up your own mind microsoft

As a IT PC student, boot dosen't have much to do with the computer's performance. So never test a computer by booting it up, it dosen't prove anything
my old windows 7 boots 21sec's , and my current os now is windows 8 DP that boots up for 12 sec's. i reinstalled all of my programs from my windows 7 os to windows 8DP. and i find out that windows 8 is much faster than windows 7!! thats my own opinion.
Windows 7 is a full version which means it has more things to load, whereas Windows 8 is just a developer preview without even the basics. Which one do you expect to boot faster?
@TheNocturneShadow, Windows 8 will be faster though. Alot of the Windows 7 tasks like Explorer are RAM-Hogs and Windows 8 is getting rid of the last pieces of Vista 7 had.

@maxxeclipse88 This is actually two identical machines Lenovo T420 8GB of RAM and 500GB Drives. There are no tricks. The video was taken during "Build" conference. There is no trick and they are both booted from cold boot. Yes. Windows 8 does boot up that quick.

When I am talking about Windows 8 missing the basics I mean that,for example, I've heard that it uses another file system, other than NTFS and FAT32. For it to be built properly it will take some time. But until the release we have quite a few months so why not just wait and see?

Are you sure you're not thinking about WINFS? The file system originally intended for Vista to do away with the dreaded registry, that was eventually cancelled.

@anamechannel you'll notice the hard drive activity is still going on the win 8 machine even after the desktop is loaded. Windows has been doing that for years and it makes opening applications unbearably slow until the drive is idle. I don't count a machine as "completely booted" until nil drive activity. Most linux distros will cold boot straight to a desktop environment with zero post-loading in around 20 seconds.

Win8 seems to be developed for tablets and not for our desktop PCs. Looks to work fine on touchscreen but not for simple pointers. Who cares about boot speed,when in virtualbox needs at least 2GB of memory to run slooooooow.. So I guess that we must buy AGAIN another machine. @TheFluffyDuck what are you talking about? i've never had a compatibility issue with win7. to be honest i've used vista and xp drivers on win7 but they worked, didn't get any issues from them either other than extracting the drivers from the installer and doing a manual search for them. i agree xp sp3 is hard to beat. it's rock solid and drivers are out there to run anything but win7 seems pretty close to xp in that area, to me anyway.
As a computer tech this is crap. I have win 8 and use it and being mine is release rc3.9 I would say it is slower then that and I ran a ssd 250gb and a 3.4 i7 and have 16gb ddr3 plus I so didn't see the post screen on the win 8 pc but the win7 had it for about 5sec hmm

Nice! And I believe Windows 8 can be installed to a 16Gb usb stick. Hopefully usb 3.0 will be a standard in PCs soon and we'll all benefit from quicker speeds. I have recently upgraded to a ssd - Corsair Force 3 and it is so quicker. Probably in real terms 3 times quicker.
@pcpik3r have you installed ATI / Nvidia / Intel display drivers? I've noticed a massive drop in resource consumption. i'll be making a video shortly and it should help out anyone with a laggy experiance

In what way are really boot timing relevant? I mean do you shut down your machine everytime you go places? Personally (Mac) close the lid, open lid type login password... thats it, I would assume it's the same thing in windows as on linux as well. Just saying.

@hotron26 micrsoft always has stream lined the betas so more than half the services are running id rather run windows 7 thats a stable system than a unstable windows 8. i have ran both systems and by fair you cant really compair system to system anyway. esp a beta system. they need to redo the video and install all the software he has on the windows 7 machine and enable all the services that windows 7 is running to make it a fair comparison

To prove that xp faster than win7, I once done a boot test of xp on netbook with lots of stuff compared to new install of win7 on laptop double the power. And xp won by 5 secs.
Found Linux to be a lot better on my netbook compared to xp, but find win8 better than Linux. That is comparing to xubuntu.
Just because the background shows up does mean it fully booted...I've tested this as well with xp and vista 7 and 8. I've noticed that each system they try to make it "boot faster" but all they do is make the background show up faster and some useless parts of the os. If you actually try to use the computer i.e. open a program or file you will notice you can not do so until it catches up with itself lol.

Nice! And I believe Windows 8 can be installed to a 16Gb usb stick. Hopefully usb 3.0 will be a standard in PCs soon and we'll all benefit from quicker speeds. I have recently upgraded to a ssd - Corsair Force 3 and it is so quicker. Probably in real terms 3 times quicker.

In what way are really boot timing relevant? I mean do you shut down your machine everytime you go places? Personally (Mac) close the lid, open lid type login password... thats it, I would assume it's the same thing in windows as on linux as well. Just saying.

@hotron26 micrsoft always has stream lined the betas so more than half the services are running id rather run windows 7 thats a stable system than a unstable windows 8. i have ran both systems and by fair you cant really compair system to system anyway. esp a beta system. they need to redo the video and install all the software he has on the windows 7 machine and enable all the services that windows 7 is running to make it a fair comparison

To prove that xp faster than win7, I once done a boot test of xp on netbook with lots of stuff compared to new install of win7 on laptop double the power. And xp won by 5 secs.
Found Linux to be a lot better on my netbook compared to xp, but find win8 better than Linux. That is comparing to xubuntu.

Here is the big deception i've seen since vista:
Just because the background shows up does mean it fully booted...I've tested this as well with xp and vista 7 and 8. I've noticed that each system they try to make it "boot faster" but all they do is make the background show up faster and some useless parts of the os. If you actually try to use the computer i.e. open a program or file you will notice you can not do so until it catches up with itself lol.
