It is very lucky that the internet is full of illiterate experts in every field providing helpful and inspiring advice, like "Give up, you'll never make it!" and "Stop while you're behind! Try becoming a gas attendant!" Good times ;)
That's right. You have a lot of body (NOT INSULTING ANYONE). I have a big body too and I am learning to conduct. If you move just a little part of your body, it will render a greater result than smaller conductors. You're doing a great job!
I'm never said never move, I just said Not too much. I also move my body. The musicians can see your emotions everywhere, in your hand gesture, face, eyes... I think it is not correct ineterpretation of my words. Wish you best.
I am a beginning conductor at a university. Thanks for your videos. Although it has bee a year since you posted this I would assume you have gotten much better. By this tape your elbows seem to have been finally released from your sides a little bit. Good job. I have a hard time conducting more music(emotion)than time. Any advice?
i have advice pretend that the music is yours and you own it and if just feel the music and believe that is there and you are the leader ,and sometimes emotion is tooken out of conducting because you hold back just let loose
They play games with the eyes! Just wear a straight, dark color, that way your hands and baton will be seen more easily-and dress like a professional, even in class. You are a leader when you get up there to direct them! Show it by dressing like you're serious!
hey! there's no need in insulting him. Give criticism with respect man. His shirt is just a bit loud, but he is a tuba player, remember. TUBA!!!!! sweet.
your tempo's are rubbish your constant rocking is a pain to watch, pulling faces is off putting and how them poor musicans look at you i don't know. I hope your tuba playing is better thatn your conducting. Also try tuneing the group it will sound better
guardsman32, unlike this awful quasi-conductor-wannabe, you are music to my ears. Unfortunately, we have to suffer some pretty atrocious comments along the way (ie: Repperil, whose prose is best left in the gutter of cheap and appalling "save-the-world-and-give-the-utterly-untalented-and-useless-guys-a-chance" manifestos, so popular in today's pathetic little world...)
Meanwhile: Sure, you can learn a lot from studying Boulez and the rest. But why must it be one or the other? Boulez OR a few videos from a conducting class? Why not both? In the videos you hear feedback and criticism from a prof. You don't get that in a Boulez video (unless he's doing a master class or somesuch). I can't take a conducting class anytime soon, so I'm glad for a little glimpse.
MrBigTwat, we're even: You can't see the point of the videos. I can't see the point of your mean-spiritedness. I have a theory so much of the piss-on-you commentary posted on YouTube comes from people who feel a need to think they're superior to others. Maybe the shoe fits, maybe it doesn't. I think it's worth considering.
How dare you say such mean things to me, mr genwms?!? all I ever wanted was for people to appreciate the music-making process transpiring from this video... And for your information, my shoes do fit nicely, thank you.
Your name even shows your immaturity and un musician like attitude. You need to shut up! You know NOTHING about what it is to get up for the first time and start conducting. And from your last comment. You cannot learn conductiong from SIMPLY watching others conduct. You just learn how to act like you're a conductor. Let the musical process work Mrsmalltwat (misspelling of name intended)
everyone's on about the "educational purpose" of this video... I'm sorry: I can't see the point! I think this Tubby-the-Tuba guy craves attention; no serious musician would ever have the undecency of posting this remarkably horrendous video. Guys: if you wanna know what conducting is about, look up Bernstein, Fürtwängler, Boulez, ANYONE who can truly show what conducting is about. So come on, join the team: BOYCOTT TUBBY'S VIDEO!!!!!!!
People can't seem to help belching up their expert criticisms. You'd think Dylan was trying to pass himself and his lab ensemble off as Karajan and the Berlin at their peak. He has presented himself as nothing but a student in a class now five years past. Can people not read? Why not receive the series as given, for a window into how conducting is taught? How many post-ers are secure enough to show themselves in the raw, learning something new?
thank you for emphasizing that. The anonymity of the internet unfortunately encourages lots of rudeness. I have watched Dylan's whole series. I have grown to appreciate what a phrase is more deeply as a result.
Dylan, I think your instructor may have given you the wrong piece to work on. You seem to be to early in your career to conduct this work - both physically and emotionally. Although I appreciate your video post for all of its intentions, I must confess that this is not Mahler. You haven't looked deep in your heart to find him yet - and until you do, your interpretation will continute to dissatisfy.
Well, that's all fine. Considering this video was taken YEARS ago, and I don't conduct for a living, and I didn't prepare, it may not have been THAT bad.
That's great! Conducting for fun, is like anything else - something to explore for its greatness, and take something from it, at a purely amateur level. But I must add that music must always have your undivided attention, if you should consider taking it more seriously. To dedicate yourself to it is not only a pleasure but also a painful sacrifice - the benefits, however are out of this world... :)
This, casescaglione, is a gesture that many an orchestra musician would gladly interpret as a way to conceal some insecurity, which in your case is barely thinkable. Am I an idiot now? Would you reply that I have no idea what I'm talking about, and that you don't need any comment or criticism, like our friend the tuba player does indirectly? Or would you think about it? Well, maestro, that's the difference between a pro and a cocky amateur. Pros have my full respect, cocky amateurs don't.
Please my friends, get along with each other. I did post these videos for the sole purpose of helping out people who may be learning the art of conducting. I have worked as a professional tubist and composer in Los Angeles for over 15 years, and I've learned over the years that respect comes from musical results, good manners, and humility, but the latter most of all.
I wouldn't call you an idiot at all. Nor would I be upset by your criticism. I think it is a good bit of advice. You are absolutely correct. At the time of this video my goal was to get more sound in my baton. My way of doing this was by taking the left away as much as possible. I am not saying that I know how to use my left hand now, but I can tell you that this video is an extreme case. The criticism is much better for being directed at me, however.
Now, casescaglione, I have seen your videos and you are obviously a professional, and a pretty good one. And as a professional you wouldn't probably react with haughtiness if someone would say that you have a tendency to cross your left hand unnecessarily along your chest, which might give the impression that you're not sure where to put it.
I already wrote somewhere that if what we are looking at here are the modest begins of an amateur conductor, it has a great merit, but the young man doesn't seem to accept criticism and being so poor in what you do that is asking for trouble.
Then came you, casescaglione, with that totally unnatural theory of "do it better or don't criticize" and I thought that no professional musician could write such a nonsense.
You're absolutely right. He seems to be a fantastic conductor. My sincere aplogies. And you're right also to point out that orchestral are always awful sightreaders. If something sounds wrong, it must always be THEIR fault.
i HAVE to meet this professor! -)-)-) No but honestly, has anybody realised how the "orchestra" absolutely falls apart when he makes this totally disproportionate gesture towards the poor cello...? No wonder the musicians seemed petrified!!! It's as if the "professor" wanted the section to sound like Berlin Phil! Dear dear dear...
Jeff Schindler is a first call conductor for many of the top studio sessions in Los Angeles. Don't forget that this "orchestra" is only playing this music together for the first time, for the purpose of helping the students. Jeff is a top-rate teacher and a fantastic conductor. Why not go over-the-top when conducting?
"Talk shit when each of you post a video on youtube"
What? Only then are we allowed to give our opinion? Are you mental?
"Conducting is one of the hardest things one could possibly undertake."
True, and the best proof can be seen here. Besides, how do you know that it's that difficult? Are you a conductor? I don't think so. So you should shut up too, according to your own rules.
If you search my user name you'll see my conducting videos. If you'd like you can make fun of me as I actually do it for a living. This guy clearly made this post for educational purposes and it was nice of him to do so.
Hey, he is trying! Just give him credit for getting up there in the first place. Everyone has to start somewhere. I'm sure you're all gifted musicians, but you need to be people first. Looking the best doesn't mean you are the best. Some people are just not as good as you, Mozarter! Keep at it Tubadylan. Musicians need teachers to guide them not idiots to know it alls making fun of them!!!
I was the student here, and this was a reading of the score, as I had only one night to look at it. Why be so critical? It is a class environment for learning. Your comments sound like you're a five year old complaining about another kid not using the jungle-gym correctly. Come on.
Did he notice the violins were unable to come in correctly because he missed their biggest cue of the entire movement. The climax of the phrase was actually too fast under the instructor.
Your'e kidding right. Is this guy a grad or undergrad student? I conducted this for my high school and it was way beyond this. I think the instructor missed the 1st violin cue at the height of the phrase too, he gave it to the cellos This student needs to check out his facial expressions too. He is not inspiring anything. There is no energy. Where is the rubato? The musicians must be playing without him. They are undoubable ignoring him, or trying too. Does he really know this score?
You need to know that this is to help any conductors in training. I should know it helps because it's helping me. It looks like he has not too much time to prepare for his classes and scores. So he is noticing things when they are played. Very few proffessional conductors could get up and conduct a piece they never saw in their life or prepared for.
