Fiji is both melanesian and polynesian. The first settlers in Fiji were polynesians who to a certain extent were absorbed by the melanesians that came. Rotuma (polynesians) is part of fiji and the lau group is full of polynesians (a good many of them moving overseas) because of the tongan influence. Fiji was also a british colony so that's where all our half-caste(part europeans) come from just like the fair/light skinned maori's that you see - so fiji's quite a mixture - hope this helps

@lynettesmp IMO I believe the Melanesians were the first settlers of Fiji. I do agree that Fiji does have a Polynesian influence to their culture which seperates them from the other Melanesian islands. The Polynesians stopped off in Fiji and then moved on to Samoa/Tonga to establish the heart of modern-day Polynesia.

Fiji has an island group (Rotuma) that are the descendants of Tongans long ago. Thats why some refer this part of fiji as polynesia
