I chose to cease following any kind of religion by the age of 13 (my parents are STRONGLY religious and still seem like they haven't forgotten...)
I tried conversing about how morals didn't come from any book, that if it did, humanity itself would have been dead long ago (put it this way: Adam existed, but did not have any morals once he moved away from God. His lack of morals, plus a high level of curiosity (i mean, everything truly WAS new) and longevity bores him of Eve...
Yeah, but why not take their gun away before they kill people?
I'm with you on this one. Religion belongs in a museum. It's time to move on.
It does much more harm than good in my view. If they aren't using it to justify killing, they are using it to form an "elite" group they are part of to seperate themselves from, and feel superior to the "rest".
However Buddhism's not too bad, if you consider that a religion.
I just want to first start out with that I totally agree with you on your quote however I am a firm believer in our 2nd amendment rights.
"Yeah, but why not take their gun away before they kill people?"
Because, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."
A gun has a manual and laws to cover it. It always has. To use it for anything save self-defense, defense of your nation in regard to the laws of the state or providing food is wrong: Period.
If guns were to become useless by some means of new technological or social advancement i would be among the first people to put mine into a display case or melt it down.
If the ownership of guns were only allowed to the elite or were to separate people into groups by their very ownership or right to ownership I would agree with your comparison.
I too like Buddhism however it is not without its dark side regardless of whether I call it a religion or not: Which I don't. ;-)
I wouldn't take their gun away, that restricts freedom, creates obsession and frustration.
Make jail-time longer >:)
As for the video, it was a nice idea.
Religion is truly something to be admired and feared. It is a work of art that involved every part of the human thinking, to create. However, it's useless now.
so people: just put it down!
It was fun while it lasted, but now it's time to grow up.... god's the ultimate santa claus.
I think your right with religion is problem of religion, but having said that, you also must agree that even atheist have assumptions about "how the world works ;)".
We all have believe systems, personal convictions, media information ect ect. We all have a different view on reality. I would argue that even without this "divine vagueness" we would have formed other large tools/groups with shared views on reality and morality.
Only elimination of small portion of groups we feel affiliated.
Manofearth, i like the idea, the analogy. It's a very good question indeed. I must say lately a lot of ideas have been shifting and i'm sorting ideas out again about what i think/believe.
On the question religion is responsible: I don't think so, at least not solely; there are more causes responsible. Even if you take the extremist interpretation. I'd say it has to do with large groups. Not recognising eachother as equal or same anymore. I think this is intrinsic property of (large) groups.
It's left over from our more primitive tribal nature and with religion in place as a way of defining and separating the "tribes" defined by religion. If enough people put the religiousness aside, one more barrier is removed.
Take the example of Northern Ireland. With without religion defining the groups there was no way of separating who was politically and economically oppressing whom during the conflict there.
Love the analogies

If 'a set of rules'/religion would be very precise and unambigious, then still you could only aim to achieve them in practice.
So how could you judge errors and would you forgive people or groups making errors?
Making a better world, starts with yourself. Granted, an open mind is required i.e. essential.
Actually my only solution right now is meditation. Peace of mind, clearity of thinking and insight due to reflection.
