  • Linus I have core i3-2100 with dh61ww mobo.I am planning to buy a gtx550 ti or gtx560ti so tell me is that will be ok with my Coolermaster extreme power plus 460 watts psu?or I need a higher psu.?

  • @TheSkeletron0 Buy a 500 W PSU and Corsair would be better

  • What would be a good wattage and brand psu for the rig I want to build?

amd fx 6100 six core processor

    8gb ram (possibly 12 or 16)

    geforce gtx 550ti

  • Big Buck bunny !!!!! :D

  • My TX650 runs my computer fine,

  • happy 2nd century

  • looks like ur windows is not genuine

  • 13:25 Linus DANCE!

  • I use coolmax 140mm 600w on ...

    Athlon IIx3 450 @3.2 ghz

    4gb ddr3 ram 1333mhz

    xfx hd 6670

    500gb 7200rpm seagate barracuda drive

    msi 760gm-p33

  • yea i need a new grapix card =))

  • I use an OCZ 1000 watt power supply and i thing there great! I also have a i7 2600k over clocked to 3.9 GHz However i can't get it to go to 4.9 GHz it just freezes my system then again i am using Windows XP 32bit home edition i don't know if that will afect it i think it will so i will try over clocking it again to 4.9 GHz when i'v got Windows 7, and lastly i think that episode did help me alot i now under stand more about power consumption and how other components afect that. Thanks Linus :)

  • haha he says 22, then corrects himself to 23 right when it switches to 22 on the first build's idle wattage.

  • My lamp uses more power than that computer did initially at load.

  • okay 550watt too less but is it possible to run sli on 650?

  • @andruha7200 Depends what cards you use, and ofc the other components. Its possible but dont expect to have anything more than a gtx 560 or radeon hd 6870

  • @andruha7200 I would go with a minimum of 750, it all depends of Graphic card your using

  • okay so i can sli on 550watt power supply?

  • gona get a corsair 1200AX 80 plus gold power supply since i am getting dual 7970s with a 3960x overclcoked to 4.8ghz with 32gbs or quad channel memory.. there is a option for a 1050 corsair 80 p[lus silver.. but i really donlt wanan change my power supply if I were to add more stuff to my computer.

  • Whats the best power supply i can buy for my specs?

    - Intel Quad Core Q9400 @ 2.66GHz

    - ATI Radeon HD 4600

    - Asus P5Q SE2

    - 4GB Ram DDR3

At the moment im running on a 500w but i think its too low and maybe i should get a 1000w?

  • @techno1125 LOL, you definitely do not need 1000watts. Get a quality 500-650watt.

  • @techno1125 Mmmm You can upgrade to 1000 watt Gold, if youre planning to upgrade your spec in a near future. But your specs dont need a 1000 watt power supply

  • @techno1125 You really do not need a 1000W... unless you plan on spending 1.5K on upgrades.

  • @techno1125 youll only need 600w at most with a single graphics card mate

  • @XIII1987 Thanks, atm i have a 550w its doing its job so i think i'll keep it.. with my specs im playing gta 4 with over 45fps so its good enough

  • Dat glasses

  • @IDixuu of course i have a fortron 700w gold psu and i5 2500k with a radeon 6970

  • I use a OCZ ZT 750w.

  • ...Please take those glasses off...

  • I use a corsair HX750.... Based on this video, it seems like i should be able to throw in another gtx 570 in my system (giving it a total of 2)... interesting....

  • 11 people doesn't care about power consumption... :S

  • I still have my Corsair TX 750 watt for over a year and it's been running my Crossfire and 6 core like a bawz

  • @fr0nage the fact that my pc only use about 65w on idle but here in the video it uses +-150w

  • I have a Diablotek DA series PSDA600 600W ATX power supply.

  • lol i have a overkill deluxe 750w psu for my i3 and 6870 :P

  • I don't understand this. I connected a amps meter yesterday and my pc is using 40w on idle and 299 when playing bf3. I'm in South Africa.

    specs =

    i5-2500k @ 4.5GHz

2x GTX 570 twin frozr III power edition (overclocked to 800MHz core and 2100MHz memory stock voltage)

    2x HDD and 4x externals

    corsair ax850w

    8GB exceleram 1600MHz

    cooler master storm sniper case

    usb sound card

  • @DiceAir What don't you understand?

I'm from Australia btw seeing as stating your location appears to be rad cool...

  • lol why do i have top comment?

  • nice, know i know more less how much power i'm spending per day!! i got a thermaltake tr2 rx 750watt 80+bronze psu, previously with a core 2 quad 9300 stock, 8gb, and a gtx460 on a asus mobo. but i'm about to finish building my new sys which has a asus p6x58d premium, 12gb gskill, an i7 960, and the gtx460, i know the psu will be good to deliver the power, but dunno if i can trust it, cause some people say they are bad quality other say that they r good, so idk!!

  • reason why wattage goes up....fans nuff said.....

  • I use a 750W for a GTX570, and GTX460 for PhysX. Probably only peaks at around 500.

  • Would a 750w psu be enough for a 4.2ghz 2500K 16gm of ram at 1600mhz and a 7970?, it is a good quality 80+ gold psu but im not sure

  • @klooger28 of course it will be enough, I'm running 2 radeon HD 6950 with my 650 watt PSU (less than your 750 watt) and that PSU can handle all the juice even when everything is on full throttle.

  • @declaration963 wow, i guess ive alwasy severely underestimated what power supplies are capable of, makes me think that all those 1500w ones are pointless

  • @klooger28 Nobody needs more than 850 watt PSU unless they're running QUAD SLI or QUAD crossfireX with top-of-the line video card, even with that configuration, it's still only consume below 1000 watt, the only configuration that can exceeded 1000 watt is dual Asus ARES or MARS 2 with EVGA SR-2 dual CPU configuration.

  • @declaration963 then why do they make up to 1500w power supplies? ive heard linus say that you dont need anyhtign more than 1250, or are the 1500w for other things?

  • @klooger28 The answer is simple, "Future Proof" we didn't know how much power to "drive" next generation graphic card and processor. imagine if single GTX 780 consuming 300 watts in full load, 4 of them means 1200 watt in Quad SLI configuration (that's only for GPU) 250 watts for dual high end Hexa or Octo core CPU, and 50 watts more is for others peripherals such SSD or HDD, Fan, Water Pump, Light decoration, etc.

  • @declaration963 i guess that makes sense, but in general the pwoer consumption wont go up by a whole lot because that just means more heat and more innovation with gpu cooling to counteract that, and the heat produced decreases with smaller architecture, i think its more likely future proof for soemthing like 5-6 way crossfire/SLI

  • @declaration963 When you're running SLI/CFX configurations, the other cards are next to never at full load, so it wont consume 1200W. More like 800-900W or less.

  • Coolermaster gx550

    Videocard: sapphire radeon hd5750 vaporX

    CPU: Core2duo e7600

Memory: 2x kingston 4gt (not sure about module)

Have to say.. You know all about this stuff ;)

  • holy shit, you can you that mouse while looking at a screen that's behind you. you've got skillz!

  • linus are you smokin the ganja? why u wearin sunglasses indoors?

  • so, i5 2500k

    gtx 570 SLI

    8gb 1600mhz ram

    2 HDD 7200rpm

I was wondering if a GS700w would power that currently I have 1 GTX 570 and it runs just fine

  • @Ri1seAgainst I wouldn't sli with a 700w psu.

  • @Ri1seAgainst I wouldn't put all that on a Gamer Series PSU. Something like a Enthusiast Series TX750 would be more suitable.

  • Would a Corsair TX 750W v2 be good enough for me:

    Intel core i7 2600k

    Nvidia Geforce GTX 570

    8GB Ram 2000Mhz ?

  • @IDixuu yes I run that same setup with a 700w GS

  • @IDixuu YES

  • @IDixuu hell yea i have the same cpu but a 580 and 16gb ram with 660W youll be fine

  • @IDixuu more than enough. Great PSU though.

  • @IDixuu Yes. Corsair is a VERY good manufacturer overall.

  • @IDixuu a HX 650 is better i think

  • @IDixuu thats the same as my system, runs perfect... you can even overclock the cpu a bit :P

  • @IDixuu Yer dude, start thinking if you add another gpu - gpu is the main thing gamers need to worry about in terms of power consumption. You're going with just one (no SLI, Crossfire), so all should be well.

  • @IDixuu Yup. I have those same but i have GTX590x2 SLI and 850W

  • @IDixuu Yes, I'm running 2600k, 6950 and 650w.

  • @IDixuu Yes it would

  • @IDixuu yep, it would do :)

  • @IDixuu Yes.

  • 23 WATTS? What is this dark magic?

  • Comment removed

  • this video helped me A LOT, thanks for the info linus..

    right now i'm running

    AMD FX4100 @3.6ghz

    8Gb of ram @1600mhz

    XFX 9500GT @ 512mb

    gigabyte 970a-ud3

1 HDD of 750gb caviar green

i'm running this rig on a LNZ650kr (it came with my sentey bx 4246)

i'm going to upgrade my graphics card.. and i have a doubt...

is this PSU going to support a GTx460? answer me please XD because i'm between that one or the GTS 450..(without changing my PSU of course)

  • Hey guys, what psu would you suggest for a system with a FX8120 and crossfire 6850s?

  • @oWhiteMonster Well, a single 6850 can reach up to 260w at its peak load. And FX-8120 can go up over 150w+ so I say around 800w would be really good, but make sure it is 80+ psu. Hope this helped :D

  • the watt reading is trolling him

  • ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ram with green pcb

  • @alankace My ram pcb is red =]

  • @alankace :( mines that color but it works fine for me :P

  • i ues a coustom built PSU, i used a 2500W vacum cleaner nad took out the power suply in that, conected all the cables(its a lot harder that that but uknow) i took from my olde 850W psu... i dont know how long i will work cuz well its a vacumcleaner.. LOLz

  • Does that mean that system can be powered by a 750w PSU if it only maxes at 523w??

  • Wow thanks, i thought i was in the red with my current ultra 550w psu running.

    440gt Phyx card

    Evga 550ti main

    6gb Crucial Ram

    Asus m4n75td mobo

    Athlon IIx2 255 OC@ 3.9Ghz

    2 HDs

    3 chassis fans.

but thanks to this i dont need to upgrade it until i wanna upgrade sum else.

  • Linus, was my upgrade from a generic "650W" extremely cheap power supply to a 550W Cooler Master one a good decision? (AthlonII 630 X4, HD4870x2) ??

  • Intel Centrino Single Core 2.0 GHz 4gb of ram not sure how many channels all i need to say is it runs minecraft on tiny at 10 fps

  • dem fps

  • i5- 2500k w/ hyper 212+, GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozer II OC edition, 12GB 1600Mhz 1.5V Mushkin & G.Skill Ram, Crucial M4 60GB SSD, WD Blue 7200rpm 500GB HDD,Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4, 2X200mm led fans, 3x120mm fans, and a Corsair HX 650 PSU. It's fine for the moment but I'm probably going to have to upgrade to a 850Watt to support a CPU OC and another GTX 560Ti in SLI.

  • i7-2600 cooled by Corsair H60, Radeon HD 6950 2GB, 16GB 1600Mhz 1.5V Corsair Vengeance Ram, OCZ Agility 3 SSD, ASRock P67 Fatal1ty Pro, 4x200MM fans including the H60 rad fan, 3x200MM fans. I'm using a Corsair GS800 PSU. It's a bit overkill right now, but I plan on Crossfiring in the future.

  • So let me get this straight, my 560 watt High power 80+ modular psu is enough for any single gpu system. Niiice

  • 'Such as, well buying something that's not gonna blow up' ahahah

  • I need some help, my current system is: AMD phenom II x4 @ 2.8GHz, 1.2v, about 75watts TDP 8gb ddr3 1333MHz (2x4gb) 7200rpm hdd dvd drive 2x200mm, 140mm, 120mm fans gigabyte 890gx motherboard pci wi-fi card POWERED BY OCZ MODxSTREAM 500WATT would it be possible to upgrade to HD 5830's in dual crossfire using 2 pci 6-pin for one of the cards and four molex to 2 6-pins for the other card?
  • My super-specs!

    PSU: 450W (unknown manufacturer)

    CPU: AMD athlon 64 2400+

    GPU: AMD Radeon x1950

do I need to say more? :P

  • @herrjonna2007 WOW. Can't say I'm much better. Athlon 64 3200+ and 8400GS needless to say it's OLD. I salute you sir, because your barely dragging along behind me. lol

  • @psgchisolm Nice to see more people showing thuth of old hardware that works :) and thanx for reply :D

  • my psu: silverstone gold 80plus 850 watt with an efficiency of 90 % at 150 euros

  • We have UPS that converts AC to DC to charge a battery that supplies DC current to an inverter to create AC to supply a PC power supply that converts it back to DC voltages. Why do we waste so much power converting and not have a 12 or 24 volt DC switching power supply that directly feeds the Motherboard From the number you demonstrate here it seems that the biggest waste is in the power supply.I wonder how these numbers might differ with a solar system rail ?

  • i love you, i have been looking everywhere for a video like this and now i know what psu i will actually need for max efficiency.

  • Old vid, but awesome. Learnt a bit here and there. :D

  • Is it weird to have a 1500w power supply, if I my PC specs are only: i5 2500k (NO OC) - GTX580 - 8 gb of ram - g1.sniper2 - Thermaltake tough power 1500w. (I can't change it though, already bought it.)

  • @siptersucks you can run the best specs without a problem with 1500w, i think you could run like 4 high end graphics cards at a time with a i7

  • 4x gtx 590 and dual prosceors 5 ghz 1500 w power suply i haev this pc

  • I’m currently building a new system but I don't know if the PSU I bought is good enough:

    CPU: i5 2500k Ram: 2x 4GB Corsair vengeance

    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB x1

    Mobo: Asus p8z68-V/Gen 3 GPU: XFX HD6870

PSU: OCZ ZS series 550W 80+ Bronze

I have most of the components but could someone please tell me if the PSU is good enough (No overclocking or Crossfire).

    Thanks.

  • @MGRvillafan92 you should be ok i think. the 6870 doesnt use much power.

  • @Palillos1337 Thanks for the reply, If I decided to get an i7 2600k would 550W still be alright?

  • @MGRvillafan92 i dont think there would be a huge difference if any at all. you should be fine considering its an 80+ psu.

  • @MGRvillafan92 well first of all you have to video card? if that is true, ofcourse:) but i'd reccomend getting atleast 850watt gold because its future proofing but up to you mate:)

  • is it just me or does Linus pronounce "processor" weird?

  • Is there a difference between wattage from the wall and wattage in the system cause seeing that dual 570s with oc 2600k pulls 500 watts from the wall seems godlike

  • Lol made in china power supply :D

  • My desktop doesn't have a power supply it has an adapter

  • My build specs: CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.2GHz. Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD53. Memory: 8GB Kingston DDR3 1333MHz (4 x 2GB). GPU's: 2 x XFX 6870's (CrossFire). SSD: 60GB OCZ Agility 3. HDD's: 2 x Samsung HDD's. Case: CoolerMaster HAF932 Advanced. Optical Drive: Pioneer Blu-Ray Drive.

Running on a CoolerMaster Silent Pro M 700W 80+ Bronze

    No problems at all!

  • @webbo254 Case has nothing to do with it lol

  • FAT BUNNY!!!!!!!!

  • how much watt would a regular HD5770 with an Athlon II X4 640 quad core, 8gb kingston value ram consume?

  • @nelizmastr the 230 watts total.

  • i'm using Corsair HX750w which is overkill for my HD 4870 and Athlon 64 x2 5000+, but i'm will soon upgrade my system to Core i7 2600k and GTX550Ti (maybe in sli) to get my 80plus Silver really work, and yes it does gave me some idea of power cosumtion

  • he missed optical drive.thumbs up if i am right

  • @afnanmahmood1996 hardly uses any power.

  • Just the thing I was looking for, I was really confused about choosing a power supply for when I build a computer soon. Looks like 700W is the way to go indeed. Thanks for the video!

  • You've given me an idea! I'll build my new PC on a bookshelf like that!

  • hes wearing those glasses because Esther beats him :(

  • @kooldoggy1 yes I would either recommend a rosewill hive psu 850 watt bronze or a corsair 850 silver psu although the corsair is more expensive you get better quality

  • Thanks a lot.......

  • Thank you.

  • im a little confused why my system is using 400 watts at idle !! , im using a 920 @4.4 ghz and tri-fire (5970+5870 @ stock speeds atm ) 12 gigs ram , and a corsair hx1000 , i'm using the same power meter as linus uses , so what do u think ??

  • @steveocrossfire oh and i for got i have 2x swiftech 655 pumps and 16 - 120 mm fans lol

  • Hi, I am running a i7 2600k, radeon 6970, 8gb ddr3 and a z68 motherboard. At the moment I have a no name 850w power supply. (It says Hytec Premium on it but I don't think anyone has heard of those??) But it doesn't seem to have any 80+ certification on it or anything like that. Would you (or anyone else) recommend upgrading to a better certified, branded power supply around 850-1000w? Also, as I am new to this, should I pay someone qualified to install this or should I just try and do it myself?

  • Using same power supply as in the video running a AMD 955X4 overclokt add 4.0ghz and a Shapphire 6950 2gig dont need to change power supply anytime soon for any upgrades hehe

  • i have a corsair 80+ 650 watt PSU; my GPU is an amd radeon 6870 and my CPU is an amd phenom ii x6 1100t. i was thinking of overclocking my CPU to something like 3.9 or 4 GHz so i could get more performance, but i don't know how much more wattage this would cause my CPU to draw. is my 650 enough? or maybe i'm better off only bumping it to 3.6 or 3.7 ghz?

  • @CAC1291 oc'ing to 4ghz shouldn't be a problem for that PSU.

  • @NCIXcom @LinusTechTips Hello everyone i have a question related: I have a relatively old computer. It's an ASUS COMMANDO, Intel Core 2 Quad, 4 GB RAM (generic), regular 750 GB SATA 3.5" HDD, GTX 285. And that's pretty much it.

My question is: why is my energy bill so high? it's over 40 USD a month. I do run my pc 24/7 but it's 75% of the time in idle mode... on my energy bill it says I consumed 800+ Kws (something like that) is it because my pc is old??

    Help anyone?? plz :(

  • how much would it normally costs u for 24 hrs a month, my local rate is at 16c pet 1 kilowatt.

  • Anyone else notice he bootlegged his windows?

  • schhh stop talk iam watching the bunny =)

  • Big buck bunny!

  • I'm pretty sure that's the power supply I have. I need a new power supply.

  • 500w 80+ novatech silent gaming psu thingy lol

  • My build specs: Mobo: gigabyte fxa 990-ud5 GPU: Gtx 460/768mb/192bit RAM: HyperX 2g x 2 1800 MHZ. CPU: Phenom II X6 1055T HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500 G x1 PSU: FSP Epsilon 600w No Overclock. Im just doubtful about my PSU if 600w psu is enough.. Actually im using it for 1 wk since i built it, so far their is no problem. But i need an advise from the expert. thanks....
  • @juankabang1 lo you will be fine. I ran my 955BE @4.4Ghz on my UD3 along with 5HDD's, a 5870, and 8Gb DDR3 ram. Just make sure the PSU is good quality. I used the Raidmax 530watt (I have a different PSU now.)

  • @juankabang1 600w is plenty. TO give you an Idea i run an I5 2500k overclocked to 4.5ghz (morepower consumption) Azza hurrican case with 8 fans, 2 gtx 460s 1g vram ocd to 850mhz, 1 ssd, 1 hdd, an asus xonar sound card, 8g ram, Asus p8p67 mobo, and a Kingston Hyperx ram cooler all running on a Corsair tx 750w no problem. 600w should be no problem with your rig. You wont pull more than 400w unless you start overclocking

  • @juankabang1 firstly what do you do with that pc? a 1055t is a terrible gaming cpu but yet you have decent dedicated graphics? video proccessing i guess?. the other thing, 600w is more than enough.

  • @juankabang1 Not the best but your PSU should hold up fine.

  • @juankabang1 I'd actually recommend a 700 - 800 watt 80+ gold as you need to keep in mind the Powered USB's and additional external/internal hdds As a 700 watt is most efficient at 400 - 500 watt consumption.

I'm just speaking from my own experience though.

  • @juankabang1 Also keep in mind every fan is consuming 20 - 30 watts each.

  • @juankabang1 It will work

  • @juankabang1 If it is 80 plus certified, yes, it is enough for your system.

  • @juankabang1 you got headroom, especially if it is a well built psu

  • @juankabang1 yes, it is actually a bit excessive...

  • Linus ur the BEST!!!!

  • Will a 750w power 2 gtx 570's? I am using the standard components...

  • @acemace3618

    no get a better 1

  • i'm using a 240W power supply wich the following pc specs:

    CPU Intel Pentium 4 531 3.0 GHz

    GPU 9500GT 512mb

    RAM 1.5Gb ddr1 :)

    80Gb HDD

    1CD-ROM

    and 2 fans

  • I am currently using a Zalman ZM750-HP Modular PSU (with HEATPIPE)

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 -' OC to 3.6GHz (thanks to Thermalright IFX-14)

XFX 8800 GTS XT (OC to GTX Performance Level)

    6 1TB HDDs

ASUS Commando (P965 Chipset - OLDSCHOOL)

  • Can a 300W PSU run amd athlon x2, 2.5 gigs of ram and a GTX 550 Ti, Radeon 6770 or Radeon 5770?

  • @thgy5678 Unless it's a very high quality PSU (I doubt it exists for 300W range), nope. You'll have problems with your system.

  • would be interesting to see this on the new amd llano apu's for the budget system.

    Great video thanks dude.

  • Hey I don't get this, you have GTX 580 SLI and the power draw is 530w. Does this mean if I have a 550w power supply it would be able to power the two graphics cards?

  • @YoshiHDify Most of that 530W is converted via the 12V rails. Generic "550W" power supplies won't deliver more than 350-400ish watts from the 12V rails, so the answer is no. It would take a very high quality 600W minimum (not recommended at all! go for 850+) power supply to run those.

  • @JesterIF Ok, thanks for the info bud. By the way my 550w is 80 Plus, but according to you it won't make a difference. Thanks anyways.

  • corsair AX1200 with 2500k @ 4.7ghx and CF HD6950 and so much more crap:P

  • So the wall supplys your pc with AC power and the PSU converts that into DC power. If my system draws 700w DC power it will only draw (estimate) 400w AC power. What I am asking is when your computer is converting power to DC do watts increase from what is being take from wall?

  • @blowupuate13 The Wattage from the wall ( Power socket ) will always be higher than that of the wattage being used by the PC. E.g You computer is using 100W but the wattage coming from the wall is 120W.

The unused Wattage is converted into heat which is why all Power Supplies have a fan on it.

Power Supplies that are more efficient, rated at "80 Plus Gold" E.g Using a 80 Plus Gold Power supply, You Computer is using 100 Watts but wattage from the wall is 105W.

  • I use a corsair tx750, it was the first upgrade to my asus computer

  • @joshuasantangelo explain

  • @TheLycanjake1 Do you leave your CPU overclocked every time you use the PC? No so you won't burn out your CPU. Same as the Power supply you don't stress it. In theory you can run the graphics card but stressing it out every time you turn on. If you tried placing that graphic card with your power supply, your PC is time bomb. When you have high end cards you must have reasonable amount of power that won't stress out.

  • @BloodlessSalvation But the guy in the video is using high end cards, and yet it only reaches like 300 something watts, wth? doesn't make sense to me

  • @TheLycanjake1 Just because he is only using 300 watts doesn't mean you can slap a 300 watt power supply expected it to be power. You need enough power to be reserved. If you tried slapping 300 watts supply, you're going between edge of blowing up or catch on fire and 100% usage.I have a Radeon HD 6850, can be powered 200-300 watts but I bought 700 watts. You can go ahead experiment that card with 500 watt and stress out your power supply.I'm not held responsible for shorting or blowing up ur pc

  • @BloodlessSalvation For reference most PSUs today are at optimal performance at roughly 80%. Also the average optimal temperature is 40c.

  • 350W Codegen with AM3 Phenom :D

  • I have a 500Watt power supply, does that mean I can run something like a GTX470? :S

  • @TheLycanjake1 Hell no. The high end of the gtx 4xx series are power hoggs.
