I use an OCZ 1000 watt power supply and i thing there great! I also have a i7 2600k over clocked to 3.9 GHz However i can't get it to go to 4.9 GHz it just freezes my system then again i am using Windows XP 32bit home edition i don't know if that will afect it i think it will so i will try over clocking it again to 4.9 GHz when i'v got Windows 7, and lastly i think that episode did help me alot i now under stand more about power consumption and how other components afect that. Thanks Linus :)
@andruha7200 Depends what cards you use, and ofc the other components. Its possible but dont expect to have anything more than a gtx 560 or radeon hd 6870
gona get a corsair 1200AX 80 plus gold power supply since i am getting dual 7970s with a 3960x overclcoked to 4.8ghz with 32gbs or quad channel memory.. there is a option for a 1050 corsair 80 p[lus silver.. but i really donlt wanan change my power supply if I were to add more stuff to my computer.
@techno1125 Mmmm You can upgrade to 1000 watt Gold, if youre planning to upgrade your spec in a near future. But your specs dont need a 1000 watt power supply
I use a corsair HX750.... Based on this video, it seems like i should be able to throw in another gtx 570 in my system (giving it a total of 2)... interesting....
nice, know i know more less how much power i'm spending per day!! i got a thermaltake tr2 rx 750watt 80+bronze psu, previously with a core 2 quad 9300 stock, 8gb, and a gtx460 on a asus mobo. but i'm about to finish building my new sys which has a asus p6x58d premium, 12gb gskill, an i7 960, and the gtx460, i know the psu will be good to deliver the power, but dunno if i can trust it, cause some people say they are bad quality other say that they r good, so idk!!
@klooger28 of course it will be enough, I'm running 2 radeon HD 6950 with my 650 watt PSU (less than your 750 watt) and that PSU can handle all the juice even when everything is on full throttle.
@declaration963 wow, i guess ive alwasy severely underestimated what power supplies are capable of, makes me think that all those 1500w ones are pointless
@klooger28 Nobody needs more than 850 watt PSU unless they're running QUAD SLI or QUAD crossfireX with top-of-the line video card, even with that configuration, it's still only consume below 1000 watt, the only configuration that can exceeded 1000 watt is dual Asus ARES or MARS 2 with EVGA SR-2 dual CPU configuration.
@declaration963 then why do they make up to 1500w power supplies? ive heard linus say that you dont need anyhtign more than 1250, or are the 1500w for other things?
@klooger28 The answer is simple, "Future Proof" we didn't know how much power to "drive" next generation graphic card and processor. imagine if single GTX 780 consuming 300 watts in full load, 4 of them means 1200 watt in Quad SLI configuration (that's only for GPU) 250 watts for dual high end Hexa or Octo core CPU, and 50 watts more is for others peripherals such SSD or HDD, Fan, Water Pump, Light decoration, etc.
@declaration963 i guess that makes sense, but in general the pwoer consumption wont go up by a whole lot because that just means more heat and more innovation with gpu cooling to counteract that, and the heat produced decreases with smaller architecture, i think its more likely future proof for soemthing like 5-6 way crossfire/SLI
@declaration963 When you're running SLI/CFX configurations, the other cards are next to never at full load, so it wont consume 1200W. More like 800-900W or less.
@IDixuu Yer dude, start thinking if you add another gpu - gpu is the main thing gamers need to worry about in terms of power consumption. You're going with just one (no SLI, Crossfire), so all should be well.
@oWhiteMonster Well, a single 6850 can reach up to 260w at its peak load. And FX-8120 can go up over 150w+ so I say around 800w would be really good, but make sure it is 80+ psu. Hope this helped :D
i ues a coustom built PSU, i used a 2500W vacum cleaner nad took out the power suply in that, conected all the cables(its a lot harder that that but uknow) i took from my olde 850W psu... i dont know how long i will work cuz well its a vacumcleaner.. LOLz
i5- 2500k w/ hyper 212+, GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozer II OC edition, 12GB 1600Mhz 1.5V Mushkin & G.Skill Ram, Crucial M4 60GB SSD, WD Blue 7200rpm 500GB HDD,Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4, 2X200mm led fans, 3x120mm fans, and a Corsair HX 650 PSU. It's fine for the moment but I'm probably going to have to upgrade to a 850Watt to support a CPU OC and another GTX 560Ti in SLI.
i7-2600 cooled by Corsair H60, Radeon HD 6950 2GB, 16GB 1600Mhz 1.5V Corsair Vengeance Ram, OCZ Agility 3 SSD, ASRock P67 Fatal1ty Pro, 4x200MM fans including the H60 rad fan, 3x200MM fans. I'm using a Corsair GS800 PSU. It's a bit overkill right now, but I plan on Crossfiring in the future.
I need some help, my current system is: AMD phenom II x4 @ 2.8GHz, 1.2v, about 75watts TDP 8gb ddr3 1333MHz (2x4gb) 7200rpm hdd dvd drive 2x200mm, 140mm, 120mm fans gigabyte 890gx motherboard pci wi-fi card POWERED BY OCZ MODxSTREAM 500WATT would it be possible to upgrade to HD 5830's in dual crossfire using 2 pci 6-pin for one of the cards and four molex to 2 6-pins for the other card?
@herrjonna2007 WOW. Can't say I'm much better. Athlon 64 3200+ and 8400GS needless to say it's OLD. I salute you sir, because your barely dragging along behind me. lol
We have UPS that converts AC to DC to charge a battery that supplies DC current to an inverter to create AC to supply a PC power supply that converts it back to DC voltages. Why do we waste so much power converting and not have a 12 or 24 volt DC switching power supply that directly feeds the Motherboard From the number you demonstrate here it seems that the biggest waste is in the power supply.I wonder how these numbers might differ with a solar system rail ?
Is it weird to have a 1500w power supply, if I my PC specs are only: i5 2500k (NO OC) - GTX580 - 8 gb of ram - g1.sniper2 - Thermaltake tough power 1500w. (I can't change it though, already bought it.)
@MGRvillafan92 well first of all you have to video card? if that is true, ofcourse:) but i'd reccomend getting atleast 850watt gold because its future proofing but up to you mate:)
Is there a difference between wattage from the wall and wattage in the system cause seeing that dual 570s with oc 2600k pulls 500 watts from the wall seems godlike
i'm using Corsair HX750w which is overkill for my HD 4870 and Athlon 64 x2 5000+, but i'm will soon upgrade my system to Core i7 2600k and GTX550Ti (maybe in sli) to get my 80plus Silver really work, and yes it does gave me some idea of power cosumtion
Just the thing I was looking for, I was really confused about choosing a power supply for when I build a computer soon. Looks like 700W is the way to go indeed. Thanks for the video!
@kooldoggy1 yes I would either recommend a rosewill hive psu 850 watt bronze or a corsair 850 silver psu although the corsair is more expensive you get better quality
im a little confused why my system is using 400 watts at idle !! , im using a 920 @4.4 ghz and tri-fire (5970+5870 @ stock speeds atm ) 12 gigs ram , and a corsair hx1000 , i'm using the same power meter as linus uses , so what do u think ??
Hi, I am running a i7 2600k, radeon 6970, 8gb ddr3 and a z68 motherboard. At the moment I have a no name 850w power supply. (It says Hytec Premium on it but I don't think anyone has heard of those??) But it doesn't seem to have any 80+ certification on it or anything like that. Would you (or anyone else) recommend upgrading to a better certified, branded power supply around 850-1000w? Also, as I am new to this, should I pay someone qualified to install this or should I just try and do it myself?
Using same power supply as in the video running a AMD 955X4 overclokt add 4.0ghz and a Shapphire 6950 2gig dont need to change power supply anytime soon for any upgrades hehe
i have a corsair 80+ 650 watt PSU; my GPU is an amd radeon 6870 and my CPU is an amd phenom ii x6 1100t. i was thinking of overclocking my CPU to something like 3.9 or 4 GHz so i could get more performance, but i don't know how much more wattage this would cause my CPU to draw. is my 650 enough? or maybe i'm better off only bumping it to 3.6 or 3.7 ghz?
@NCIXcom@LinusTechTips Hello everyone i have a question related: I have a relatively old computer. It's an ASUS COMMANDO, Intel Core 2 Quad, 4 GB RAM (generic), regular 750 GB SATA 3.5" HDD, GTX 285. And that's pretty much it.
My question is: why is my energy bill so high? it's over 40 USD a month. I do run my pc 24/7 but it's 75% of the time in idle mode... on my energy bill it says I consumed 800+ Kws (something like that) is it because my pc is old??
My build specs: Mobo: gigabyte fxa 990-ud5 GPU: Gtx 460/768mb/192bit RAM: HyperX 2g x 2 1800 MHZ. CPU: Phenom II X6 1055T HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500 G x1 PSU: FSP Epsilon 600w No Overclock. Im just doubtful about my PSU if 600w psu is enough.. Actually im using it for 1 wk since i built it, so far their is no problem. But i need an advise from the expert. thanks....
@juankabang1 lo you will be fine. I ran my 955BE @4.4Ghz on my UD3 along with 5HDD's, a 5870, and 8Gb DDR3 ram. Just make sure the PSU is good quality. I used the Raidmax 530watt (I have a different PSU now.)
@juankabang1 600w is plenty. TO give you an Idea i run an I5 2500k overclocked to 4.5ghz (morepower consumption) Azza hurrican case with 8 fans, 2 gtx 460s 1g vram ocd to 850mhz, 1 ssd, 1 hdd, an asus xonar sound card, 8g ram, Asus p8p67 mobo, and a Kingston Hyperx ram cooler all running on a Corsair tx 750w no problem. 600w should be no problem with your rig. You wont pull more than 400w unless you start overclocking
@juankabang1 firstly what do you do with that pc? a 1055t is a terrible gaming cpu but yet you have decent dedicated graphics? video proccessing i guess?. the other thing, 600w is more than enough.
@juankabang1 I'd actually recommend a 700 - 800 watt 80+ gold as you need to keep in mind the Powered USB's and additional external/internal hdds As a 700 watt is most efficient at 400 - 500 watt consumption.
Hey I don't get this, you have GTX 580 SLI and the power draw is 530w. Does this mean if I have a 550w power supply it would be able to power the two graphics cards?
@YoshiHDify Most of that 530W is converted via the 12V rails. Generic "550W" power supplies won't deliver more than 350-400ish watts from the 12V rails, so the answer is no. It would take a very high quality 600W minimum (not recommended at all! go for 850+) power supply to run those.
So the wall supplys your pc with AC power and the PSU converts that into DC power. If my system draws 700w DC power it will only draw (estimate) 400w AC power. What I am asking is when your computer is converting power to DC do watts increase from what is being take from wall?
@blowupuate13 The Wattage from the wall ( Power socket ) will always be higher than that of the wattage being used by the PC. E.g You computer is using 100W but the wattage coming from the wall is 120W.
The unused Wattage is converted into heat which is why all Power Supplies have a fan on it.
Power Supplies that are more efficient, rated at "80 Plus Gold" E.g Using a 80 Plus Gold Power supply, You Computer is using 100 Watts but wattage from the wall is 105W.
@TheLycanjake1 Do you leave your CPU overclocked every time you use the PC? No so you won't burn out your CPU. Same as the Power supply you don't stress it. In theory you can run the graphics card but stressing it out every time you turn on. If you tried placing that graphic card with your power supply, your PC is time bomb. When you have high end cards you must have reasonable amount of power that won't stress out.
@TheLycanjake1 Just because he is only using 300 watts doesn't mean you can slap a 300 watt power supply expected it to be power. You need enough power to be reserved. If you tried slapping 300 watts supply, you're going between edge of blowing up or catch on fire and 100% usage.I have a Radeon HD 6850, can be powered 200-300 watts but I bought 700 watts. You can go ahead experiment that card with 500 watt and stress out your power supply.I'm not held responsible for shorting or blowing up ur pc
Linus I have core i3-2100 with dh61ww mobo.I am planning to buy a gtx550 ti or gtx560ti so tell me is that will be ok with my Coolermaster extreme power plus 460 watts psu?or I need a higher psu.?

@siptersucks you can run the best specs without a problem with 1500w, i think you could run like 4 high end graphics cards at a time with a i7

I’m currently building a new system but I don't know if the PSU I bought is good enough:
CPU: i5 2500k Ram: 2x 4GB Corsair vengeance
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB x1
Mobo: Asus p8z68-V/Gen 3 GPU: XFX HD6870
PSU: OCZ ZS series 550W 80+ Bronze
I have most of the components but could someone please tell me if the PSU is good enough (No overclocking or Crossfire).
Thanks.

@MGRvillafan92 i dont think there would be a huge difference if any at all. you should be fine considering its an 80+ psu.

Also, as I am new to this, should I pay someone qualified to install this or should I just try and do it myself?

i have a corsair 80+ 650 watt PSU; my GPU is an amd radeon 6870 and my CPU is an amd phenom ii x6 1100t. i was thinking of overclocking my CPU to something like 3.9 or 4 GHz so i could get more performance, but i don't know how much more wattage this would cause my CPU to draw. is my 650 enough? or maybe i'm better off only bumping it to 3.6 or 3.7 ghz?

@NCIXcom @LinusTechTips Hello everyone i have a question related: I have a relatively old computer.
Help anyone?? plz :(

@juankabang1 lo you will be fine. I ran my 955BE @4.4Ghz on my UD3 along with 5HDD's, a 5870, and 8Gb DDR3 ram. Just make sure the PSU is good quality. I used the Raidmax 530watt (I have a different PSU now.)
misterpc23 4 months ago
@juankabang1 600w is plenty. TO give you an Idea i run an I5 2500k overclocked to 4.5ghz (morepower consumption) Azza hurrican case with 8 fans, 2 gtx 460s 1g vram ocd to 850mhz, 1 ssd, 1 hdd, an asus xonar sound card, 8g ram, Asus p8p67 mobo, and a Kingston Hyperx ram cooler all running on a Corsair tx 750w no problem. 600w should be no problem with your rig. You wont pull more than 400w unless you start overclocking
BASSxACE 3 months ago
@juankabang1 firstly what do you do with that pc? a 1055t is a terrible gaming cpu but yet you have decent dedicated graphics? video proccessing i guess?. the other thing, 600w is more than enough.
Choklitmlky 3 months ago
@juankabang1 Not the best but your PSU should hold up fine.
THExR3ALxABC 2 months ago
@juankabang1 I'd actually recommend a 700 - 800 watt 80+ gold as you need to keep in mind the Powered USB's and additional external/internal hdds As a 700 watt is most efficient at 400 - 500 watt consumption.
I'm just speaking from my own experience though.
xkblxcripple 2 months ago
@juankabang1 Also keep in mind every fan is consuming 20 - 30 watts each.

GungYoshi 4 months ago
Hey I don't get this, you have GTX 580 SLI and the power draw is 530w. Does this mean if I have a 550w power supply it would be able to power the two graphics cards?
YoshiHDify 4 months ago
@YoshiHDify Most of that 530W is converted via the 12V rails. Generic "550W" power supplies won't deliver more than 350-400ish watts from the 12V rails, so the answer is no. It would take a very high quality 600W minimum (not recommended at all! go for 850+) power supply to run those.
JesterIF 4 months ago
@JesterIF Ok, thanks for the info bud. By the way my 550w is 80 Plus, but according to you it won't make a difference. Thanks anyways.

tarmvr3d 4 months ago
So the wall supplys your pc with AC power and the PSU converts that into DC power. If my system draws 700w DC power it will only draw (estimate) 400w AC power. What I am asking is when your computer is converting power to DC do watts increase from what is being take from wall?
blowupuate13 5 months ago
@blowupuate13 The Wattage from the wall ( Power socket ) will always be higher than that of the wattage being used by the PC. E.g You computer is using 100W but the wattage coming from the wall is 120W.
The unused Wattage is converted into heat which is why all Power Supplies have a fan on it.
Power Supplies that are more efficient, rated at "80 Plus Gold" E.g Using a 80 Plus Gold Power supply, You Computer is using 100 Watts but wattage from the wall is 105W.

TheLycanjake1 5 months ago
@TheLycanjake1 Do you leave your CPU overclocked every time you use the PC? No so you won't burn out your CPU. Same as the Power supply you don't stress it. In theory you can run the graphics card but stressing it out every time you turn on. If you tried placing that graphic card with your power supply, your PC is time bomb. When you have high end cards you must have reasonable amount of power that won't stress out.

BloodlessSalvation 5 months ago
@TheLycanjake1 Just because he is only using 300 watts doesn't mean you can slap a 300 watt power supply expected it to be power. You need enough power to be reserved. If you tried slapping 300 watts supply, you're going between edge of blowing up or catch on fire and 100% usage.I have a Radeon HD 6850, can be powered 200-300 watts but I bought 700 watts. You can go ahead experiment that card with 500 watt and stress out your power supply.I'm not held responsible for shorting or blowing up ur pc
