"HOW LONG IS A PIECE OF STRING ?"

  • This is so stupid... Fuck him... I can't believe I clicked on this shit...

  • This disappoints me. Instruments should NOT be a means of competition, but instead a medium to express your heart, soul and creativity. It angers me to see people treating music as a sport. I see this kind of thing every day, people arguing over who's faster, more developed etc. It's disgusting.

  • great to me is how it makes me feel, how it moves me.Flamingo Guitar,Classical,Acoustic guitarists can be GREAT. But nothing moves me more than an Electric Guitar.Who cares if you can play the bass line a chord and a melody line all at the same time.Close your eyes,it doesn't matter

  • Theres artists and there players or copycats.Jimi Hendrix was an artist who moves me like no other.Hendrix WINS in my book,Jeff Beck,Tommy Bolin,David Gilmore. They play with MUCH feeling .Its not how fast you can do a scale or that you can do bass, rhythm, lead at the same time.its all about tone and feeling.

  • wait, how can an english guy write a book about american life. thats a little pretensious, but it seems ok. but if some american guy wrote a book about england, they would be crucified (Figuratively) just becasue they do not have an accent.

  • pointless

  • Is this what the friggin english do with all thier spare time , set around in red shorts and be pall mall to the finest of detail?

  • Be fucking hillarious if someone kicked him in gear by stealthily saturating the bookshelves with lighter fliud and setting that bitch off without him noticing.....He does like to hear himself speak.

What a fucking stupid waste of several minutes of at least thirty two thousand people so far.......now if he had to listen to us for as much time each.worth it?maybe.I'd spend my time chasing him with a cattle prod.each time i hit him i'd scream "who's the Best timo tay!-Who's the best?!!" *FAIL!!*

  • If I were writing a book on the greatest guitarist I wouldn't try to pick one player. I'd focus instead on identifying and clearly characterizing the many ways that a player can be great. Then I'd try to identify some specific players and performances that exemplify each of those ways.

Of course I don't have either the knowledge or the talent to do any of that. But if someone did it for me I think I would learn a lot about music and about guitar playing from their book.

  • I'd like to add too is that - while greatest title is a bullshit thing - what is really the most important is that every generation of guitarist raise the bar up a level for the next guys to make guitar an even more capable instrument.

  • I listened to his "Guitar: An American Life" book in audio version and as a guy who loves the guitar I found it interesting. But I'm not going to even give him the time of day with this stupidity. I don't care how make-believe educated you try to approach this subject from. It's a silly question with no possible frame of reference. shame on him for using hype to sell a book.

You can never really use the term greatest when talking music - you can't account for peoples "taste" in music.

  • shred isent a genre....its a religion

  • If Danny Gatton has his place among the other mentionned i concur :D

  • Monte Montgomery, Shawn Lane, Jimi Hendrix, Chet Atkins, SRV, Kazuhito Yamashita, Jeff Beck, those are some good guitarist.

  • you talk too much..... W E S ,,,,,,,

  • Fuck put some pants on you freak

  • Not a very flattering camera angle there, almost a Sharon Stone moment! Interesting and insightful content though.

  • If you have'nt heard Wes Montgomery you need to look him up on U2b.

  • opinion is the gauge. Guitar and music are so diverse in themselves. Why ask "who is the greatest": it just seems odd. It's not a competition. It should be most influencial guitarist or maybe just guiatrists that everyone should know about. It's like art: good and bad. One guitarist everyone should listen to is Steve Howe from Yes: A Great diverse player and my favourite.

  • michael bloomfield

  • In my opinion, Electric Guitar players are automatically disqualified for the answer. Most (not all) show big limitations when attempting the more difficult acoustic guitar. If one is to pick a best, then that person MUST posess complete and total EFFORTLESSNESS when playing the most difficult passages in Classical or Flamenco styles. There have been artists with this gift. (Vicente Gomez (Decca Guitar Recital LP) Check him out on you tube. Pepe Romero also has this. Dave Appolon, Mandolinist

  • I think that versatility would be the answer for that quest, and the one that gave justice with respect in different style, in my opinion, is Chet Atkins. Segovia, Django, Joe Pass, Van Halen,Hendrix, Satriani and so on, they are thousand of outstang guitar player but give a classical guitar to Hendrix, or, a Fender Strat to Segovia and you got the answer.

  • anyone who can actually claim someone as the greatest guitarist in the world is nothing but a cunt

  • Nice thigh faggot.

  • Why are there so many mean responses to this? Chill out.

  • Que presentación la de este tipo , en pantaloneta por lo menos un pantalón parece un GAY,que falta de respeto maestro.................

  • I think that there is no best guitarist in the world 1. many different styles atract different people. Like compareing john williams to jimi Hendrix. Both are masters of there style. 2. Even finding the best guitarist within a style is impossible. Such as who is better John Williams or Julian Bream? John williams is technically perfect while Bream is more interesting of a performer and better musicality.

  • I think one of the greatest guitarist I've heard is Chet Atkins and a new one on the block is Conrad Oberg .I also play guitar and about 8 different one . Thanks. Keep in touch .

  • paco de lucia in my opinnion

  • the best is PACO DE LUCIAAAAA NOT DISCUSSION!!!!

  • Dude, are you wearing a skirt?

  • There are so many that can do nearly everything there isn't a "greatest", but for me it's about using the instrument to generate emotion. Peter Green, Carlos Santana, Ed Gerhard, B.B. King. Each of these guy’s has the ability to let each note speak, - like playing one not at a time and letting it ring. Seemingly impossible to do when playing at speed but that’s what it sounds like to me when I listen to them. I sure ain’t one of them, but a man can dream!

  • Hendrix on electric

    Hedges on Acoustic

  • WHO HAS THE STUPIDEST VIDEO?

    RIGHT HERE.

  • Impossible, you can't do it. Not only the because of the technical demands of each genre but simply because of the fact that music, no matter scientific you try to make it, is subjective.

  • Jimi Hendrix for blues. He was one of the most influential guitarist of all time.

  • the best is Alexey Zimakov youtube.com/watch?v=Qn75W8dteFU

  • Pat Metheny for jazz

  • Pepe Romero

  • u look gay

  • If you want to wrap up all aspects of a great guitar playing, who is all around knowledgable of music, composition and just eveyrthing, would be Shawn Lane

  • Malmsteen FTW!

  • Lol!!!!

  • This guy is English, and he's not even funny.....Now, that's hard to accomplish!

I can tell that not only is he NOT a guitarist.....He is also a horrible guitar critique!!!

  • If you were you define GREATEST as:

    1. the most you can do on the guitar using 8 fingers.

    2. The most styles you can master.

    3. The fastest and most tastefull notes you can play.

Then......the greatest guitarist in the world is:

  • 1. Stanley Jordon.......no one in the world can play the complex music that he can. Look him up......and you'll agree with me.

    2. Allan Holdsworth......greatest legato style fusion/rock player of all time. He changed the face of fusion shredding electric guitar at the same intensity as Hendrix changed electric guitar...

  • 3. John Mclaughlin.......Greatest acoustic and electric jazz fusion guitarist of all time. He changed the face of Jazz guitar. Being the first guitarist to join Miles Davis and create Fusion.

    4. Shawn Lane........Fastest and most complex fusion/blues/rock electric guitarist. He used piano-like intervals on guitar to make it sound like some sort alga-rhythm synth......

  • 5. Alex Machacek.......He picked up where Holdsworld and Mclaughlin left off. If Frank Zappa and Holdsworth had a threesome with Paganini, Machacek would be their offspring. He is the new face of electric guitar!

Just to clear up a few things on my decision making process.....

If I were living in the 60's.....my top picks for greatest guitarist in the world would be:

    1. Django Reinhardt

    2. Joe Pass

    3. Wes Montegomery

  • You must hear Andrew Latimer's guitar, from camel. Albums: The Snow Goose, Rajaz, Mirage. Steve Hackett, from Genesis, being beautiful and notorius without a loud solo; have'nt heard his material alone. David Gilmour's perfect expression must be considered: simple, makes you live forever in the sky, makes you cry, everything.

  • When they(Rolling Stone Magazine) refer to Greatest Guitarist of All TIme...they are reffering to guitarist in mainstream "popular" music when recording began.

  • I this guys for real? I mean really, Is this GUY for REAL? The best guitarist well lets see, WEAR SOME PANTS FIRST YOU IDIOT.

  • @guitarreclasique

CLASSIC ROCK N ROLL COMMENT man ......ROCK ON !

  • I can't hear anything my Nigel Tufnel Les Paul Custom is still sustaining in it's case. Do you hear it?

  • your balls are showing........bumble bee tuna!

  • "because he rocks , man!" lol

  • You must be joking. ..I'm just waiting for John Cleese to pop his head out from between yer bandy white legs and blurt out "and now for something completely different." I've called Radiohead and reported you to the karma police.

  • Shawn Lane is Incomparable!!!

  • if you go with a body of work, you have to put jerry garcia up there at the top. he played bluegrass, folk, r&b, rock. he then melded those all together to create his own style. which has become a genre in itself. he played with emotion and let his guitar become his inner voice. he has inspired 2 or 3 generations of listeners to pick up a guitar.

  • iron maidens dave murray best ever

  • What a ridiculous discussion.

  • why is he wearing those shorts?? i think he is a paedophile!!

  • The greatest guitarist alive from my point of view would be not one but two:

Maurizio Colonna and Augustine Barrios Mangore. Why? Because they both contributed with a lots of wonderful pieces of music. These two persons could easily be addressed as the guitarist contributing the most to classical guitar music.

  • Now you could say there are some rock musicians with great compositions too. That is absolutely right but if you look at the quality of the music and the subtle possibilities of expressing oneself with a classical guitar which only a true master is capable of there is no way you could do that with a electric guitar.

  • No disrespect to those genres where the electrical guitar is used but it has limitations compared to a classical guitar. Besides that these two guitarist are second to none with regard to technique. So no matter who you wil compare them to they will score better either with regard to both technique and compositions or with regard compositions.

  • Kazuhito Yamashita or Flavio Sala would be examples for guitarist with fantastic technique but without having contributed nearly as much as Colonna or Barrios with regard to own compositions.

  • The world's greatest guitarist that ever lived is Mildred Scrod .

  • There are thousands of amazing guitarists around the world... and many are not known much further as their own block.

    Thus the question is stupid!

  • Carlos Santana. That's all.

  • Slash(saul hudson) He has one of the most unique styles out of all players i have heard, There isnt a single guitarist who is like Him. He is also and Absolutly incredible composer, The songs by his former band Guns and Roses contain solos and riffs that are in such harmony with the actual song it can blow your mind. His live solos are also brilliant. Hes the whole package. Hes not like all the usual suspects who are mainly blues players and are for the most part similar in style. he is God:D

  • randy rhoads

  • Noel Gallagher, he puts meaning into his music.

  • I heard danny gatton and joe satriani had a kid together, his names fred firth or something. also, im the best

  • Joesph Spence

  • definitely '' hasan cihan örter '' ı think its better if you try to listen him

  • It's about taste, so with that said I'm going with Jimi Hendrix.

  • Jeff Beck

  • Ditto! Jeff Beck amazes me with his ability to remain relevant and continue to pioneer in every decade of his life. He never sounds like he is relying on his reputation and past success.

  • fair play jimmmy DJANGOs a Legend, bobcaths69 is only a kid in comparison but you should check out his link, the guy aught to be huge.

  • ANDY MCKEE.....................and all decent guitarist use scales not just classical ones. ya big poof!

  • Of course... Baden Powell

  • Mario Guliani was awsome!

  • One word DJANGO.

  • @jimmmmybrady DANNY GATTON

  • Yes Django is

  • Julian Bream, Xuefei Yang, Segovia ....

  • who's to say what is best ,. what is music ..no one knows

  • ledward kaapana

  • DON,T FORGET ABOUT "ROBIN TROWER"

  • Mike OLDFIELD the greatest one

    :o))

  • i think mark knopfler is by far the best guitarist. Not only can he play all types of guitars, but he is a great composer, and even better player.

  • JIMI HENDRIX

  • Of course STEVE HOWE ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ HE IS THE WORLD GREATEST GUITARIST ALL OVER THE WORLD

  • JASON BECKER ALL THE WAY!!!!!

  • Lenny Breau

  • Buckethead... Cuz he... rocks? NAA... Cuz he can play anything and he writes in a unik way and... yeah...

  • Aussie guy Tommy Emanuel, hes just assume,

  • EDDIE VAN HALEN !!!!!

  • lol, philosophy? crap? same? different?............ crap again?

  • i do not think you can name someone the greatest guitarist. guitar players have different styles. and anyway, its all opinion. for that matter you can name greatest guitarist in the world until no more children are born

  • it doesn't matter which genre, great guitarists can play all types of music. not every guitarist sticks to one type of music.

  • Jimmy Hendrix. Flat out. If any of you say Slash you don't diserve a Penis nor a Vagina.

  • jimmy was great, but he isn't the greatest of all time. have you ever heard of della vega? have you ever heard of yngwie malmstein? have you ever heard of dimebag darrell? these people have done things that jimmy could never have done. look them up, it will blow your mind!

  • JIMMY PAGE FLAT OUT, AND ITS JIMI

  • i agree with you about slash just not jimmy

  • john petrucci

  • wtf...

  • best guitar player..

We can't say that, we have different taste in music, but music is, I think we all now, a kind of ART, and never mind of that, we are calling someone LEGEND even he didn't have ART in his soul..

And yes, we can't say someone is better if he more famous but not better then someone else who is more private..

best guitar player - WE can't say, Low-Medium Class

Artist guitar player - here we can talk very well, High Class..

  • this guy is a fucking homo

  • Danny Gatton

  • PAGE!

  • lolz he wears short shorts

  • i just love the work of ana vidovic

  • Jimmy Thackery

  • I dont even think there should be a number 1 guitarist. Not one guitarist on the earth has the same style and feel so why say one guys the greatest?

    Theres always the greats like

Jimmy paige, Jimi Hendrix, Buckethead, Slash, Dimebag Darrell, Kirk Hammett, Zakk Wylde, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Michael Angelo Batio and soooo many more

  • I can only speak for the rock guitarists since I haven't heard of so many others. I really love Brian May and Jimi Hendrix, but actually I think the greatest rock guitarist is Jimmy Page, he can play acoustic and electric songs, wonderful solos, genious riffs. But the best of all time? I don't know who is, but I've heard some people say Andres Segovia is good, and I've heard some of him. But I don't know thta much, so you people who do know him, tell us about him, please?

  • Who really cares who is the greatest guitarist in the world, thats a really amatuer thing to think about, stop talking like a smart ass , you're not even a professional..

  • I agree with you, retsmath24.

The definition of greatest guitarist is almost difficult. To mentioning about best guitarist is to mentioning who is greatest man.

Any kind of guitarist has his or her own meaning of existance. And many of us express the limitation of guitar music.

    Thank you. Manabu Kunimoto

  • where you left your pants?

  • good list bigvinsweet, I'll have to check them all out. Ive heard of most of them but not gotten around to hearin' em yet. But I definately agree you simply cant pick one best guitarist. Oh another band that I would add for very original, interesting guitar playing is the pixies. watch the live version of "vamos", there might well be some Hendrix/ Townshend influence there

  • What is the best spice in the world? What beach is the best on Earth? Which wine has the best flavor? These are all questions, like the one posed in the video, that can have no real answer. One may say so and so is my favorite guitarist but only a fool believes that any single person can be labeled the "greatest".

  • this dude is gay as a hatter, how can anyone say who's the best guitarist.i know one thing its not jimmy page :)

  • This guy may be a wanker, but what a pair o' legs!

  • There is no such thing as a "best" guitarist. It's impossible to set a criteria that makes any sense. I do not think there even needs to be one, who cares. There are hoards of wonderful guitarists past and present. Let's just enjoy all the wonderful music and hope there is much more to come!

  • this guys super gay, way to start with a big sigh, you pussy!

  • there r john mc laughlin jimi hendrix paco de lucia duane allman django rienhardt jeff beck randy rhoads srv !!!!!!!! doc watson!!!!!

  • theres still a lot that I need to hear, but basically great guitar playing is about how they make you feel, they gotta have soul, angus young and slash are dry, and boring, Yngwie and Eddie are great, but they dont write any good songs, so why bother including them?

  • heres my list in no particular order: Tony Iommi, Stevie Ray Vaughn, frank zappa, randy rhoads, Billy Gibbons, jagori tanna (I mother earth), carlos santana, chuck shuldiner (Death), lerry lalond (primus), Dimebag, zakk wilde, gordon lightfoot, buckethead, alex lifeson, dave mustaine, dave gilmour, and pretty much every guitarist that Chuck shuldiner hired/ played with, Fruschiante, and I might even add Petrucci to this list because he writes some very interesting music

  • allow me to tell you who is in my opinion the best guitarist (and who made my life better :-): john mc laughlin (longest way covered), jimi hendrix (most innovative), frank zappa (most peculiar, harmonically and on the whole), gary lucas (most versatile), paul kossoff (simplest but so soulful), thurston moore and lee renaldo (best team), king buzzo (heaviest), greetings

  • Phil Keaggy period. Most versatile on electric, acoustic. classical. He has mastered the guitar.

  • malmsteen has too if that's all you're looking at.

  • way to much thigh so nasty :(

  • Alexi laiho --> band : children of bodom

    - the incredible powerfull vocal parts along very difficult guitar lead parts @ the same time

    - Life struggle

    - becase he is one of the guy's who dont need 10.000 effect's to make his guitar sound good

  • Comment removed

  • There is no correct answer to this question. Too many genre's. Each has several great players past and present.

Tommy Emmanuel, Joe Pass, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Django, Jeff Beck, Jimi, SRV etc., etc, etc, etc etc and on and on and etal, bla bla bla.

    Apples and Oranges.

  • Steve Howe. Period.

  • I offer up Steve Stevens from Billy Idol. I am not saying he is the greatest of all time, but he is really underrated. He is a great rock guitaist, but he also plays some amazing classical/flamenco guitar live in concert. Now that is something that you don't see from many "rock" guitairists.

  • joe satriani

  • Joe satriani all the way to the top!

  • i think your write. he has a grate amount of imaganation and he can play gest has controld has eric even when playing 10 times as fast

  • I suggest you be much less boring

  • YA BUT HAVE ANY OF YOU ASS HOLES EVER GOT PAID TO PUBLISH A BOOK, i DON'T THANK SO

  • love the shorts

  • clapton, improvisational skills

  • Abel Carlevaro (URUGUAY)

  • Paco de Lucia because of his mastery of flamenco technique and his no. 1 position in that idiom, his novel compositions which revolutionized flamenco, his many records, his ability to play jazz with the best on the planet, and his abilities in classical. Few guitarists have such a wide cross over range, few have revolutionized their own idiom, and few have as masterful a technique. Add all of this up and you a No.1 contender for the best guitarist of all time.

  • nobody has mentioned Ed Wynne of Ozric Tentacles or Bob Clic of Melting Euphoria or Toninho Horta or Daevid Allen of Gong or Steve Tibbets or Egberto Gismonti

  • How about Su Meng on classical guitar! She is by far one of the best classical guitarist in the world. She has precision, speed, musicality, and memory, the most important ingredients for a good classical guitarist. And she exceeds in all of that, and beyond!

  • Tommy Emmanuel, of course! That's what Chet Atkins said!

  • hahahaha this guy is on drugs. He is a tard king.

  • put some pants on you creep

  • THis guy is an idiot. first off, he obviously has no concept for guitar. he said only classical guitarists play scales. all guitarist play some kinda of scale. yes, some just strum and do rhythmic stuff, but all fucking guitarists play scales, and if his old white ass has been playing for 30years why the fuck cant he do a scale his fingers should be more dexterous.

    .

  • dude, this guy does not know anything about guitars. pop guitarist, jazz guitarist, all fucking guitarists play scales, not just strum two gay cords.

  • Rolling Stones is a magazine with lists based on popularity(They don't know what they're talking about). Joe Pass, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai are a few of the best that I'm familiar with that this guy happened to mention. I agree with comparing by genre as this guy says if comparing at all. This guy has a professional point. Stop making stupid comparisons of 2 random guitarists.

  • There is no greatest guitar player. There are the greatest but there's no comparison between their different styles and techniques.

  • If this book was written by an American, who had grown up in the drudges of country, I'd think more of his book....

I have no doubt it was heavily researched, but it's like a white man writing a book about being a black man. It just don't work; no matter how much you research it.

    ("Black Like Me" exempted)

  • It's as simple as beuterkoek: I am the greatest for reading this crap.

  • I can certainly tell you who the worlds most boring, red shorts wearing douche is. Can you guess?

  • the best is the one that made the most money.period.

  • Tommy Emmanuel is by far the greatest guitar player of all time, nobody can touch him.

  • You make a very valid point.

  • KIMOCK!

  • I had to stop listening to this stupidity after 3 minutes 28 seconds. The question should really be: WHO CARES??? How is it necessary or useful to compare one musician with another, especially at the virtuosic end of the spectrum? Particularly when the question can never be answered. It's subjective, it's genre-related, it's cultural, it's a big fat waste of time. But I guess academics have to justify their existences somehow. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

  • like ive said on many other videos like this, mark knopfler is the best ever guitarist, hes great in everything: rock, classica, softrock, hes unbeatable!

  • the best is EVH

  • Hello sweetcheeks HA HA

the best guitarist will be the guys who are proficient in multi styles like guthrie govan eric johnson etc

  • Way too much thigh Tim! haha

  • I think at least some divisions would need to be established, such as genre. I am a big fan of Michael Hedges, Jimi Hendrix, Mike Stern, Al Demeola as well as Steve Vai, but I do not think it is fair or even realistic to say that any one of those I mentioned are "better" than someone else. It really is apples and oranges.
