His swing with Foley is still putting "stress" on his knee. He has to post up on something to turn and get to his left side. Even after having a great swing with Butch, he went away and is back to working on the same things that they worked on. I hope he finds a happy medium.
I've heard Tiger's nowadays swing has changed in comparison to this one here. Can anybody tell me what the **** was wrong with this swing... it's ridiculously good, almost perfect why would he want to change it I wonder.
@ivanriverogolf he got bigger and stronger and his body changed and he was putting alot of stress on his knee, i think, and he felt he was losing power
@ivanriverogolf This swing definitely was close to perfect. But a perfectionist like Tiger is always looking to get better, that was the main reason for his multiple swing changes over the last dozen years. Also, with his on going battle against his knee (although apparently that is fully healed for the moment) he has been forced to change his swing to take some stress off of the joints; he has also switched shoes to take some of the pressure off.
back in 2000 tiger kept his arms in front of his body so well.. that was really the key to his control back then.. In my opinion this is the best his swing has ever been and probably ever will be..
I just love that swing especially the smoothness of his transition! Shame he can't swing like that in full speed because of his knee. The new Foley swing is progressing nicely, though. It will be interesting to see what will happen once he's overcome his mental struggels and regained some confidence. At least he looks way better on the course nowadays. That SHIRT in the video is just outrageous - at least 3 sizes too large - one would've thought that Nike would send him a couple that fit...
Tiger could go back to this swing in a matter of months. He won't, though, and he can't. He "can't" as he straightens his left knee and gets the weight to the outside of his left foot at the finish, putting an excessive amount of stress on that joint. He would have to widen his stance slightly and finish on a flexed left knee a la George Knudson.
More significantly, though, he "won't" as that would be a concession that he was wrong and Butch was right.
nowadays he is also obsessed with compression. the same stuff that hogan liked to talk about. flat plane weak left hand grip with strong bow at impact. hands way foward. i think he knows to much. when you see his clincs he is like a golf teacher he has impressive knowledge. partly this made him a great player i guess but sometimes it causes problems in your head to.
this one with harmon must be the most beautiful swing the world has and probably will ever see. this probably harmed his body but i think it was the right swing for tiger at this time. the only thing i dont understand is why is he trying to flatten his plane more and more. i think he has this picture of ben hogan in his head and that he was the greatest ball strker but they both have different body types. I like a jason day type of plane. it would suit tiger to.
such a differnce when his swing was so steep and upright, he talks about keeping the club infornt of him, yet he though lay off the club at the top would do it, but no... that just gets the club more behind him, this swing is perfect example of keeping the club in front of him, very upright
his left shoulder is so much higher here.. i think he was more confident back then but his swing is better now.. just my opinion. his putting for sure did a 180 thou
This is the best swing video of Tiger on YouTube! Can you take some of this footage and make another video with it slowed down? I saw you slowed down some footage for another swing comparison video. Would just need a few face on and down the line swings with what I assume are Tiger's 8iron, 4iron, 3wood and Driver filmed here. Would be much appreciated if you have the time. Thanks!
I don't understand why Tiger decided to bulk up!!! It seems Tiger puts a lot more force throughout his body with the extra muscle mass....I wonder if that extra mass is affecting his knee issues. Just looking at how fluid and easy he was swinging earlier in his career I always ask my self why he decided to bulk up....
Thanks for posting, great raw footage. I was never a big fan of Tiger, but I do wish him the best and root for him now more than I ever did. It's sad to see someone who has lost his way like Tiger. Hopefully he gets it back, and understands it starts in the values taught to him a long time ago.
when i watch this swing and the one he has now....its not even fair...i think if tiger really wanted to win majors agian, he should join up with harmon agian and they should bring this swing back....none of this foley stack and tilt shit
tiger's swing looked gorgeous no matter how you look at it. but, it seems that tiger is the kind to always tinker with what he has, in order to see a new direction in his game. the only one to know the real reason why he swing didnt work eventually is tiger. i just hope that he will one day have no swing coach with him, and use all his previous knowledge to find the ultimate swing.
Where do people get off saying this swing would cause the knee to go bad? Are they mad, or are they Slack and Tillers rewriting golf history? If you study this swing carefully, you would realize that this swing would put much less pressure on the left knee because the knee stays flexed much longer after impact. If you look at Stack and Tilt swings, even good ones like Mahan's, they put much more pressure on the knee because of the knee getting stiff much earlier, and the left hip getting outs
tigers really good enough to compete with almost any swing he chooses but you need the complete game( emphasis on putting) to win. he didnt just change his swing to get better he changed to put less pressure on his knee.point is tiger is just over the hill imo and he might at best tie jack nicklaus with majors won when its all said and done
@ConnHustla That's kind of an oxymoron. You say he's over the hill but he may tie Jack (meaning he'd still win 4 majors). Regardless, if you watched the Masters front 9, and even the back 9 (he hit some incredible shots like that 6 iron from 220 to 4 feet for eagle, then he misses), you'd probably want to pick your words wisely. Tiger's biggest nemesis since the comeback has been his chipping and even more so (by a mile), his putting. If he putts average right now he'll win a lot easily...
Man the good old days. Tiger really owned this swing look how fluid it is and you can tell he is not thinking about mechanics at all...he is totally on auto pilot
I still don't understand why Tiger ever swayed from this swing. To me, this swing is technically perfect and the tempo and rhythm is impeccable. It is a much more fluid move and it seems his arms move more freely into his down and through swing. In relation to hitting more fairways, I agree that he was much more accurate with the steel shafted driver. He was strong enough to launch the ball 330 and hit fairways then, why not now? He's practically unbeatable from the short grass.
MrJb3golf, I also remember seeing that steel shaft gleaming in the sun on many days. In fact, I saw it personally at a local tour event that he played in during that time. I also personally feel that the switch to graphite and the length of the driver had an impact on his driving.
@muddywater661 Yep......I recall he switched to the longer/graphite shafts because he sought more distance. I remember he started falling further back in his distance per drive stats........I will say this: When Tiger learns to hit his driver IN THE FAIRWAY, he could dominate for the next decade IF he stays healthy. This swing is the one that will take him there. Heck, if he switched back to THIS driver NOW I bet he hits more fairways..........
Additionally, here's an interesting point:TW's accuracy with the driver really changed when he switched to a graphite shaft. People forget (or just never knew) that in his dominate years (99-02), he used a steel shafted driver.
Great Video. I come back to watch this on a regular basis. TW certainly doesn't look stuck here does he??? His swing is fluid, oily, and free flowing. He doesn't "squat" as much and lose his level like you see now. His new swing seems very complicated..Has anyone noticed he still gets stuck and has a awkward follow through? I was at match play and watched his match. His tee shot on the 19th hole (with a 3 wood) was a classic example of him getting "stuck"..he came out of his posture..
When Tiger hits his driver here at first I thought it was his 3 wood, but then realized just how big clubheads have gotten since 2000. I think he still used the 975D here.
It's time for tiger to go back to this golf swing. YEAR 2000- 71.22 % frwys hit, 75% grns hit. And in YEAR 2009, 64% Frwys hit, and 68% grns hit. Tigers swing path is too in to out now. Way too many blocks right. In this video his swing is much more upright.
@NortheastGolfer Tiger changed his swing to accomodate for his knee. His swing might have been better in 2000 but his left knee could not handle the force he created every swing
@NortheastGolfer It's not the golf swing that changed..its his body. tiger decided to bulk up since 2000 with a lot of muscle and he had to change his swing to compensate for the extra muscle mass on him...he swings the club more like a lumber jack swinging an axe these days rather than a samururai swinging his sword like in the past.
Thanks for posting, this is gold. Pity for him he left Butch Harmon. Now he can't swing like that because of the muscle, so great to have this footage of his best swing action, IMO.
Thanks for posting, this is gold. Pity for him he left Butch Harmon. Now he can't swing like that because of the muscle, so great to have this footage of his best swing action, IMO.
Actually like his swing with Foley when it's on more than this one. Much more sound on the body rather than snapping the left knee into hyperextension with those super fast hips that were required with Harmon's version. People are saying he's hitting it just as good as back then on the range but further. Which is kinda scary
@terryrowles But if you watch Lawrie he goes across on the practice swing but when he actually hits the ball his club stays exactly on plane his swing is just long...it's interesting.
I see a little of tiger going back to his old swing when he was in his prime sometimes these days. he has had many knee surgeries too . so he could possibly changing his swing just for helping out his knee not to hurt soo much.
@PUArtista Foley has him more bent over at address and the club is around his body. All Tiger does is look at Hogan and trys to copy him. He needs to go back to Butch with the club more in front of the body and start winning again
Tiger's take away and backswing here are magical. Back when he would sting that 2-iron out there 260-270, the man could throw some heat to it and get 340-350 with those small driver heads (in comparison to today's equipment) and not be two fairways over.
tiger was in his prime in this years , no one has dominated the game of golf at the level he is done , even byron nelson said '' i,ve see him playing , and i have to say that iif i was in my prime i couldnt beat tiger''
@PUArtista He wasn't a better ball striker than Hogan. Tiger is clearly an amazing golfer and one of the best to play, but not a better ball striker than Hogan. Tiger is less than average off the tee, and a great ball ball striker, but then again, so is everyone on the tour. What allows Tiger to win is his incredible, all-around short game.
@twalter8895 Now? Not so much...then, there could be a case--if Tiger was learning the same game as Hogan, you know bunt it out there 260 then fine. Tiger was as accurate as Hogan except...his 260 club was his 2 iron. I dont think anyone is terribly accurate when your goal is to hit it 360 with your drive. And agreed on the short game thing(please see any highlight of the 2000 usopen)
I just f'ing love this video man. He recently made a comment in the media...around the U.S. Open...and says he is older, can't make this particular swing anymore. I call B.S. His swing here looks smoother and more tempo'd then his current swing. He isn't ripping after the ball in any of these swings. I sure hope you have more of Tiger..if so get them posted ASAP!
His swing with Foley is still putting "stress" on his knee. He has to post up on something to turn and get to his left side. Even after having a great swing with Butch, he went away and is back to working on the same things that they worked on. I hope he finds a happy medium.

@nickpryor07 Funny how from what we hear about Foley, he's trying to get him back to this kind of upright plane again. I wonder why?
PUArtista 1 year ago
@PUArtista Foley has him more bent over at address and the club is around his body. All Tiger does is look at Hogan and trys to copy him. He needs to go back to Butch with the club more in front of the body and start winning again

How big is that shirt ????

Notice you've some old parnevik at the start, would you have any more? So hard to find any full motion swings of him. Would really appreciate it! : )

Tiger's take away and backswing here are magical. Back when he would sting that 2-iron out there 260-270, the man could throw some heat to it and get 340-350 with those small driver heads (in comparison to today's equipment) and not be two fairways over.

@PUArtista I dont think hogan , nicklaus , palmer , nelson , were at the level tiger was in 2000 , NO WAY
sandersuperfollador 1 year ago
tiger was in his prime in this years , no one has dominated the game of golf at the level he is done , even byron nelson said '' i,ve see him playing , and i have to say that iif i was in my prime i couldnt beat tiger''
sandersuperfollador 1 year ago
tiger woods in 2000 dominated and changed the world of golf forever . PGA TOUR players are eating fruits and energy drinks because of tiger.

It can be argued that he was a better ball striker than even Hogan himself at this point in his career...I argue for Tiger haha
PUArtista 1 year ago
@PUArtista i didnt know hogan so cant argue, there is no doubt that in 2000 tiger was putting like a superhuman...
terryrowles 1 year ago 5
@terryrowles haha wrong comparison, he was putting better than Bobby Locke!
PUArtista 1 year ago
@PUArtista He wasn't a better ball striker than Hogan. Tiger is clearly an amazing golfer and one of the best to play, but not a better ball striker than Hogan. Tiger is less than average off the tee, and a great ball ball striker, but then again, so is everyone on the tour. What allows Tiger to win is his incredible, all-around short game.
twalter8895 1 year ago
@twalter8895 Now? Not so much...then, there could be a case--if Tiger was learning the same game as Hogan, you know bunt it out there 260 then fine. Tiger was as accurate as Hogan except...his 260 club was his 2 iron. I dont think anyone is terribly accurate when your goal is to hit it 360 with your drive. And agreed on the short game thing(please see any highlight of the 2000 usopen)

@PUArtista WOW!!! better than hogan? lmao

@PUArtista Thats a little much ehhh? Hogan was the definition of BALLSTRIKING. In my opinion.
