You dont HAVE to feed your child breat milk. Thats the mother's choice. My mom did wanna feed me but she told me I didnt want it. She also said I didnt want the baby food either. xD I would spit it up. :P So I just ate formula and "homemade" baby food and I turned out just fine. :] I only ever got sick once in my life. The reality is that we have 10x as many cases overall and 10x as many deaths in infants now that vaccination is at 98% than we did in '76 when vaccination was at 40%. I'm not sure vaccination is working well at all when it comes to pertussis. One study on an epidemic in Israel showed that immunity can wear off after as little as 2 years. And only 85% of kids are immune after the 4 shots. There is definitely a problem.

CDC's own statistics. Go on their site, they tell you right there we have 10x more now than in the 70's an dif you look at the vaccination rates in the 70's, it was as low as 40% in 76. Look it up.

I found the data on the CDC site you are referring to. It is in an article titled "Pertussis --- United States, 2001--2003", Pertussis being of course whooping cough. If you actually critically read the whole thing, the article acknowledges the problem as having to do with adolescents' vaccines wearing off and requiring boosters. The vaccine works, and we should all be immunized to it because if we're not, babies who can't yet be vaccinated will be susceptible.

I know all that. But the point is, even though we are vaccinating, we actually have more pertussis and more infant deaths. As far as I am concerned, they seriously need to improve the vaccine. Even vaccinated kids can get pertussis and although they will have mild illness themselves, which is good, they can still pass ot on to babies. They should make a vaccine that actually makes and keeps you immune for a decent length of time.

Whooping cough can kill babies. And this sort of thing is on the rise especially in certain areas of Australia populated by anti-vaccination people. In fact there is at least on case over there of an innocent baby (that is not of anti-vax parents) dying of whooping cough because the herd immunity level of the adults was so low that she caught it. It's good to see at least one celebrity using their voice to hopefully counteract those of people like Jenny McCarthy.

My cousin died of pertussis in 2002 when he was 6 weeks old, exactly 2 weeks before he was due to get his vaccination. He was 1 of only 15 children that died in the state of Pennsylvania due to pertussis on 2002. The whole family was tested and it was determined he didnt catch it from any of us. Whoever made colin sick was never notified and may have contaminated others. He was taken to the local hospital where he was misdiagnosed and sent home.

5 days later he was diagnosed with pertussis and sent to a childrens hospital where he died. Had the first hospital spotted the disease when they had the chance, Colin could have been treated early and survived. Early diagnosis is crucial and could mean life and death for the child. My mum couldn't breast feed me when I was a baby and I was no sicker than other kids. My boyfriend was breastfed and had constant painful ear infections as a child and teen. I think it's a bit of a sweeping generalisation to say what you've said amerenio. My mum was also made to feel really bad for not breast feeding me even though she was extremely ill. I don't think thats really fair and it's done me no harm being formula fed.

Individual cases do not constitute a rebuttal to population-level data. You were lucky, and your boyfriend was unlucky. Breastfeeding decreases the statistical likelihood of health problems over a population, and there are no drawbacks. There is no reason not to breastfeed, and every reason to promote it.

Promotion yes but midwives forcing women to breastfeed is totally wrong! Like I said my mother was forced to do so & could not because she was so ill. Women who don't produce much milk are made to feel bad. I go to a Bipolar support group where EIGHT mothers were made to feel bad for not feeding, even though they were on medications which would harm baby. They were also made to feel bad for starting meds again even though Bipolar women become very ill after birth. It's a womans RIGHT to choose!
