  • I cannot believe it is 30 years old !!! Where have the years gone?!?

  • I heard this on the 'one show' last night and had to find it!

  • Even after all these years, she is a Star !

  • At night when everyone else is asleep I listen to this song.

  • Wonderful song from the beautiful Kiki Dee (almost parallels the attitude to 'Wide Boy' by Nik Kershaw made later) though I think she got short-changed by the lacklustre video even by those early days standards. A forgotten 80s gem.

  • kiki i still love you :)

  • With all due respect, such achingly gorgeous peepers, Mrs. Matthews! Also, such uniquely perfect pipes! Your 1974 long-player is an absolute masterpiece! "Today's music ain't got the same soul!" Sheer brilliance, Kiki - if I may call you "Kiki"! ♥!

  • Still brilliant even after all these years*****

  • who would like to post Kiki Dee's Stay Close to You

  • I just love Kiki Dee! And this is so energetic... one of the best songs, always makes my day. Thanks!

  • time has flown

  • is that Willie Rushton :)

  • She looks like Ziggy Stardust

  • The man sitting in the row before Kiki wants to go to sleep or worse...

  • Now I hope you young un's can understand why we kids on the 1960s - to 80s - block who grew-up with goose-pimple music like this walk down to the post office looking so depressed! We grew up with this kind of music and we an't going to accept the dross we hear today!

  • now i no whot hoo did cool

  • Listened to a short interview with Kiki and Johnnie Walker on BBC Radio 2 this afternoon - I'd totally forgotten from my teen years when I knew all sorts of facts about singers and bands, that Kiki is from Bradford. Heard that she was signed up to Tamla Motown when the company moved to California from a 60s show on Radio 2, the other month.

Johnnie played two early Kiki songs, then commented that Kiki 'went a little quiet' after her big hit duet hit with Elton John!

  • @Oystercatcher011 I just fell into this song, and I love it!!! I was trying to figure out what song the melody was similar to. Andrew Gold's "Lonely Boy"? What do you think? If not, can you suggest something else. It's driving me crazy!! You seem like a music conneiseur, so I thought I'd ask you.

  • @orwellwasrite VIDEO KILLED A RADIOSTAR !

  • Fantastic!

  • I saw a documentary about Dusty Springfield and apparently Dusty saw Kiki Dee as a real threat and wanted to make sure she got first refusal on any potential songs ahead of Kiki.

  • Well, this isn't the original clip of course, it's for the German 70s/80s pop show Bananas.

  • What UK TV show was this song used as the theme tune? It's really bugging me!

  • New faces,honey. x

  • @ijavdun Opportunity knocks, not new faces :)

  • @ijavdun opportunity knock

  • Surely everyone knows? The late, great Mr Monkhouse and "Opportunity Knocks". (The best part of the show was the bloody theme tune).

  • Kiki is a bloody GODDESS!!!!

  • Great song, one of my favorites of 1981... only a weak chart position - what a pity!

One of these songs you can hear more than three times again and again without getting tired of it.

  • great stuff, thanks for this. Helped me to track down the artist for the song I heard this morning on the radio!

  • I thought this was 1980, not '81.....? Ive always loved this song!

  • she was signed on with an R&B Label! She was signed way young! If we had her starting out now... she would blow all the pop girls away! look at that natural face! A great voice! A great bod... Hellooooo! Europe won in the eighties! They loved her and we did flock of seagulls! LOL

  • Nice song - i like the old people in the video eating crisps in the background - funny!

  • well done kiki.one of my favourites, not only look gorgeous but brilliant voice as well

  • WIth a jawline like that she was born to be a singer.

  • wow time warp aint heard this for years ;-)

  • I LOVE THIS...!!!

  • I am sooo happy I found this... has not heard this one for ages...!! Great to hear it again!!

  • I still love this... (can not get enough of this song...)

  • Ive always loved this song, going way back to my childhood. I think its one of the best 80s songs ever and it sadly over looked alot. Its weird how the song is so good and the video is so bad, I know it was 1981 but there still could have made it better.

  • @kcirish

I'm the type of person that if I have nothing nice to say then I try NOT to say it on youtube. I'm trying to say this in the NICEST way possible but I think the reason why the video is sooo cheesy is because Kiki Dee can't dance to save her life. I have watched EVERY video posted of Kiki Dee singing "Star" and in EVERY single video she literally stands there motionless. Again I'm NOT trying to diss Kiki Dee. I LOVE this song! :)

  • @kalmanizer fucking bitch

  • @BRUTUALTRUTH what do u mean?

  • @fj9fl That kalmanizer is an armchaair critic and a coward!

  • @kcirish

Remember she was a 35-year-old grizzled veteran by this time. So she knew what she was singing about. Punch up "Dateline Diamonds" to see her as a nineteen-year-old.

  • @pinz2022 God your considered a grizzled veteran at 35 now???

  • @kcirish if you want to see what Kiki would be like when she was in her late 20's look at jennifer carpenter the star of Dexter on hbo in the u.s.. its about a serial killer and that girl looks so much like Kiki its scarry.she.s even got some of the same mannerisms. she talks with an american accent of course which is delightful cause it makes you think ..so thats what Kiki would sound like if she was born here you can almost swear its her.

  • @1986billyk Dexter's sister? Like Kiki? Gimme some of what you're smoking, dude... ^_^

  • @zarathustra2k1 dexters sister is hot and sassy . the same way kiki can get and yes there is a resemblence ..though kikis prettier and hotter.. its fun to project kiki into some similar looking/acting chick in their twenties.kind of a time machine thing.she shouldda done more tv /movies cause she would have been a great action movie girl.use your imagination ..not neccesay to get stoned LOL

  • damn damn damn what a nice lady need i say more

  • Thanks to the youtube video Elton John and Kiki Dee "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." or else I would have NEVER heard of Kiki Dee. This song is AMAZING and deserves to be a classic. :)

  • Love this song and have since I first heard it when I was 9 and on holiday in France. The video's a bit underpowered for the song, but then it was the very beginning of the music video era and there wasn't much experience to build on. I feel a bit bad for the dancers as it doesn't look like they got a great deal of time for practice prior to shooting.

  • noy only a brilliant voice but gorgeous as well !!

  • was that Elton John on the organ in the cinema. Brilliant song, a bit of a slow video.

  • Kiki Dee. The first white artist to be signed to Motown, at age 19.

  • no it was r dean taylor

  • First white female artist agfagaevart meant

  • Wasn't Chris Clark the first white female at Motown?

  • The first British artist, I believe.

I think R. Dean Taylor was the first and Chris Clark was the first white woman.

  • Got everything what evil Ursula(1939) did as woman and mother

to Reina(1971) as woman and mother

to Elisabeth (1916)as woman and mother

using things of Reina and Elisabeth

  • can anyone help im trying to find a garage version by klass act of star (kikki dee)

  • God 1981 !!!!

  • nice, sounds a bit like video killed the radio star...

  • Great song, rare video. Went Top 10 in the UK. Released in the US on her GREAT album PERFECT TIMING. KIKI IS A VERY UNDERRATED FEMALE ARTIST IN ROCK.

  • WOW............what a babe!

  • Always feel uplifted by this song. One of music's most powerful voices. Love Kiki!

  • What an out and out honey she is!!!

  • i cant download this song anywhere!

can anyone get it for me ?

  • I remember this from when I was a kid on opportunity knocks, my parents had it on every saturday and enjoyed it.

It was Very much like - Britons got tallent.

VERY RETRO BUT A FANTASTIC 80's TUNE.

  • very good song eh

  • Very Funky song,

and she looks super sexy in this!

    Man I love redheads!

  • Great song! Just a minor correction to the lyrics:

    They can build you up

And they can break you down

    With just the right words

    I know they're heavy

    Now just how many

More like you are trying, trying.

  • She's a great singer. Pity she never made it REALLY big - that talent should have gone further. Fun song!

  • Well, she did get to number one with Elton. She's in her 60s now and still out there doing it.

  • Love this song I was born in 1981 and I am a Star! such a beautiful song
