Wonderful song from the beautiful Kiki Dee (almost parallels the attitude to 'Wide Boy' by Nik Kershaw made later) though I think she got short-changed by the lacklustre video even by those early days standards. A forgotten 80s gem.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
With all due respect, such achingly gorgeous peepers, Mrs. Matthews! Also, such uniquely perfect pipes! Your 1974 long-player is an absolute masterpiece! "Today's music ain't got the same soul!" Sheer brilliance, Kiki - if I may call you "Kiki"! ♥!
Now I hope you young un's can understand why we kids on the 1960s - to 80s - block who grew-up with goose-pimple music like this walk down to the post office looking so depressed! We grew up with this kind of music and we an't going to accept the dross we hear today!
Listened to a short interview with Kiki and Johnnie Walker on BBC Radio 2 this afternoon - I'd totally forgotten from my teen years when I knew all sorts of facts about singers and bands, that Kiki is from Bradford. Heard that she was signed up to Tamla Motown when the company moved to California from a 60s show on Radio 2, the other month.
Johnnie played two early Kiki songs, then commented that Kiki 'went a little quiet' after her big hit duet hit with Elton John!
@Oystercatcher011 I just fell into this song, and I love it!!! I was trying to figure out what song the melody was similar to. Andrew Gold's "Lonely Boy"? What do you think? If not, can you suggest something else. It's driving me crazy!! You seem like a music conneiseur, so I thought I'd ask you.
I saw a documentary about Dusty Springfield and apparently Dusty saw Kiki Dee as a real threat and wanted to make sure she got first refusal on any potential songs ahead of Kiki.
she was signed on with an R&B Label! She was signed way young! If we had her starting out now... she would blow all the pop girls away! look at that natural face! A great voice! A great bod... Hellooooo! Europe won in the eighties! They loved her and we did flock of seagulls! LOL
Ive always loved this song, going way back to my childhood. I think its one of the best 80s songs ever and it sadly over looked alot. Its weird how the song is so good and the video is so bad, I know it was 1981 but there still could have made it better.
I'm the type of person that if I have nothing nice to say then I try NOT to say it on youtube. I'm trying to say this in the NICEST way possible but I think the reason why the video is sooo cheesy is because Kiki Dee can't dance to save her life. I have watched EVERY video posted of Kiki Dee singing "Star" and in EVERY single video she literally stands there motionless. Again I'm NOT trying to diss Kiki Dee. I LOVE this song! :)
Remember she was a 35-year-old grizzled veteran by this time. So she knew what she was singing about. Punch up "Dateline Diamonds" to see her as a nineteen-year-old.
@kcirish if you want to see what Kiki would be like when she was in her late 20's look at jennifer carpenter the star of Dexter on hbo in the u.s.. its about a serial killer and that girl looks so much like Kiki its scarry.she.s even got some of the same mannerisms. she talks with an american accent of course which is delightful cause it makes you think ..so thats what Kiki would sound like if she was born here you can almost swear its her.
@zarathustra2k1 dexters sister is hot and sassy . the same way kiki can get and yes there is a resemblence ..though kikis prettier and hotter.. its fun to project kiki into some similar looking/acting chick in their twenties.kind of a time machine thing.she shouldda done more tv /movies cause she would have been a great action movie girl.use your imagination ..not neccesay to get stoned LOL
Thanks to the youtube video Elton John and Kiki Dee "Don't Go Breaking My Heart." or else I would have NEVER heard of Kiki Dee. This song is AMAZING and deserves to be a classic. :)
Love this song and have since I first heard it when I was 9 and on holiday in France. The video's a bit underpowered for the song, but then it was the very beginning of the music video era and there wasn't much experience to build on. I feel a bit bad for the dancers as it doesn't look like they got a great deal of time for practice prior to shooting.
Came back from the Falklands in '82 and this was on the radio as we came alongside in Pompey. Brings back a few memories!!

One of these songs you can hear more than three times again and again without getting tired of it.

Great song! Just a minor correction to the lyrics:
They can build you up
And they can break you down
With just the right words
I know they're heavy
Now just how many
More like you are trying, trying.
