The "andante meditativo" from 4:08 - 7:00 has to be my favorite musical thing in the whole world. Beautiful. Never get tired of it. Love the contrast between that and what comes after too.
Martha plays it with such clarity and control. Absolute command of this piece. The ease, grace and control with which she executes difficult passages always astounds me. Martha is the best! And she's still beautiful too.
Your friend should listen to the "Concerto fo Ondes Martinot and orchestra" by Andre' Jolivet. It's immensely scary, but almost impossible to find now. It's also an absolutely marvelous work. sanjosemike
In some orchestras, if a string musician breaks a string during the performance, it's conventional to pass the instrument to the back and exchange it with the last player in the section. Either the last player sits out of the performance or they fix the string off stage.
@whit838 In one concert I attended, the soloist (Gil Shaham), a violinist, broke his E- string in the middle of a performance and swapped fiddles with the concertmaster..
...whoa that's a scary situation to be in. Soloist and suddenly your string breaks.
Speaking of which, I've broken two of my piano teacher's strings in the past (once playing Liszt, once playing Shostakovich). Hope it doesn't happen to me; there will be no switching for me.
@whit838 And if you see closely at the very end the guy that trade it instrument to the girl in front of her, also exchange it to the girl at his right side... Mmm, I´ve always wonder that too... Sorry my english and the 1 year-later reply
the whole concerto is slower than previous performances i've noticed, and its awesome to see it isn't all just about blitzing through it as fast as she can. her playing in the last 10 yrs has gained SUCH expressiveness, it compliments the insanity technique for speed she has.
I agree, but I also think she has always been expressive and in touch with the sincerest emotions, but she always seems to be changing and evolving at the same time, for better or for worse, and exploring different sides of her. I've always liked her performances at any time, but I do especially like her recent performances alot!
oh definately yes, she's always been expressive, hence the reason she's won numerous competitions, there's always been something special, but it just shows what experience can do to enhance an already amazing artist.
I love Allegro Moderato!!! :)

I just saw Lang Lang play this concerto tonight, i really enjoyed it, but i do find that Argerich's interpretation of this piece is much better.

That Hamburg Steinway sounds damn good! I am not big on American Steinways but the bass and singing tones in the treble are great.

I study music at UCI. I was playing a recording of this concerto and my friend listening said that 4:10 - 7:10 was the scariest music he's heard.
