  • I was lucky enough to see him play live with Fathead. Mr. Blues did a concert taped for TV with Ray Charles and Dizzy. You could see that Dizzy loved Crawford's playing. Hopefully, that episode will also find its way onto youtube.

  • Nice post! Night music was a great show and too hip to stay on the air. RIP Hank Crawford and Hiram Bullock, the guitarist here for those who might not know. . .

  • who is playing the bari sax hes really good

  • @werjoi Might be Howard Johnson, I'm not sure though.

  • Man o' man wish I could play the sax like Crawford or Sandborn!! Tats da blues baby!!

  • Is that Herb Robertson on trumpet?

  • We miss you uncle Hank RIP!

  • wow I recognize a lot of hanks phrasing and voice in sanborns style, obviously a big influence

  • Radio stations should play more of this master of sax, Mr.Hank Crawford. He's why I swifted from the flute to the sax. So smooth and easy. This is what "Quiet Storms" should play.

  • Sanborn just said, "f*ck it, I'm getting Hank CRAWFORD on my show, dambit!" LOL! I would too!

  • From the album "From the Heart" in 1962-his third solo album on Atlantic Records. This album really influenced Sanborn-he covers a tune from this album, "What Will I Tell My Heart" on his most recent album.

  • Absolutely great....he's a master

  • A little trivia: the bari player here, Howard Johnson, played and recorded with Crawford in the '60s.

I know David Sanborn was digging being in Hank's section for this. Hell, I would too! That arrangement is just ace.

  • Damb. This is sooo damn slanky. I woulda killed to have heard Hank with Ray or his own small group back in the '60s! Chill bumps.

  • I have been trying to work out what make of sax Hank is playing, does anyone know? RIP HANK

  • @jedblues It's a Selmer Super Action 80.

  • memmber his LP hank crawfords back? it had a picture of him showing his back. w

  • So incredibly beautiful - brings tears to my eyes.

  • He got me into saxophone. Too bad he never got the attention he deserved. But I guess he didn't care at all.

  • I know it's a crime, 90% of people are like Hank who?

  • Wow! I just on a lark thought about HC and did a yahoo search(I knew he had been sick but I'd heard he was back playing about a year or so ago......) and read the brief l.a. times article. I was blessed to see him twice live. The 2nd time in our conversation, I was trying to let him know how much his music meant to me. That small band of Bro. Ray's with HC writing those killer charts-had a horn section that held its own with ANY. From Earl Bostic to Sanborn is the most SOULFUL player ever. HCRIP

  • that tone....Im losin' it.

  • awesome song!!

  • Hank's penetrating tone was an inspiration for Dave Sanborn, very nice to see them both on the same video....hard to believe all 3 of those guys died in the same month...

  • Can't believe the sad news...Hank Crawford was the ultimate sound of R&B saxophone. I loved his CTI albums of the late 60s-early 70s.

  • And like Elvis, he has added much that is great to music. Stylistically he was of his time, but he always tries to play with passion and guts. He isn't a revolutionary, but he is a great player. Saw Kenny Garrett last night with JM and CC. Brian Blade stole the show. Garrett is awesome and hip, but could he exist without a dave sanborn? Be honest.

  • David Sanborn is the Elvis of the modern saxophone. For better or worse.

  • Hey, everyone seems Ray Charles was a little short in heaven and had to call his horn section home.

    R.I.P. brothers.

    J-

    Leroy "Hog" Cooper (Aug. 31, 1928-Jan. 15, 2009.).

    David "Fathead" Newman (Feb. 24. 1993-Jan. 20, 2009).

Bennie Ross "Hank" Crawford, Jr. (21 December 1934 29 January 2009).

    Ray Charles boys.

  • My ! My!! Man how he can play ,,,sounds so good !! the singing lady ellen...

  • I heard the sorrowful news just a few moments ago. Thank you Mr. Crawford for the great sax playing over many years. May your music live on forever as the memory of you will never pass. Rest in Peace.

  • Thank you, Hank.

  • Rest in peace, Mr. Crawford. I went to Fathead Newman's memorial service in Dallas a week and a half ago and learned that Leroy Cooper had passed as well. All three (Crawford, Newman, Cooper) had been the sax section in Ray Charles' band in the late 50s-early 60s and they all passed within two weeks of each other. Heavy. Cooper-1/15/09, Newman-1/20/09 and Crawford-1/29/09.

  • God Bless you Hank, Rest In Peace. You won't be forgotten.

  • does anyone have my favorite midnight over memphis?

  • OUTSTANDING.....

  • THANKS! I loves me some Hank. Get his old albums on Atlantic from 1960-1971. Especially the earlier ones as they have that small Ray Charles band (minus Ray) and are just stunning. Long live Hank!

  • I'm suprised hank can get such a bright sound with a ebonite mouthpeice..

  • there is no such thing as stealing from other musicians, it's the same as sayin that your son or daughter stole from elders to learn how to speak, it is human nature to pick up what you like as you grow. so if mr sanborn stole i susppose the term influence doesn't exist

  • The master speaks.

  • I know Hank C. was David Sanborn's main influence........I can hear it here!

it's been a long time since I've played alto, man I want one now!

  • Surprised that Sanborn would have the chutzpah to share the stage with the man he stole his style from top to bottom.

    Hank is being very gracious.

  • hahaha agreed

  • I dunno, I would say "stole" is way too harsh a word. Sure, that's where he get his sense of how to play the saxophone, but everyone has to learn from someone- we don't try to reinvent the wheel. And since Hank is a master, why not learn from one of the best?

  • Hank woudn't do "I do the Rock" with Tim Curry or play with Bowie, or with the Gil Evans Orchestra. Sanborn did some cool stuff to his credit.

  • I agree. Stole is too harsh a world. You may as well say that every bebop saxophonist ever "stole" from Charlie Parker. Besides, I've noted that he always credits Hank as being one of his biggest influences; its not as though he's trying to pass off that style as his own.

  • bravo bravo !!!

  • i would really like to hear Wildflower by Hank Crawford

  • me toooooo

  • Hank Crawford is a bad dude! Blow Hank blow! I love his 1970's album "Don't you worry bout a thing" - Smokin'

  • The master speaks.

  • Yay for slow blues baby!!
