You'll learn that these owls are very emotional and mate for life. When a mate dies, the remaining owl may turn to face his tree and will himself to die. He's just too depressed to go on living. :(

Sadly, barn owls are endangered in at least 6 Midwestern states. I suspect that is largely due to loss of habitat, not many barns left, nor other suitable nesting sites. Most die from accidental means within their first year of life. I wish there was a huge sanctuary here in the Midwest for these gorgeous, wonderful birds. But of course, farm land is going to developers.
