everything about his hands is perfect. i think it's funny how the modern classical guitar technique, especially the right hand is pretty similar to what flamenco players have probly been doing all along.
It doesn't appear to be a flamenco guitar. First most typically flamenco guitars have spruce tops (although not always) and this one is cedar. But main thing is the width of the sides doesn't look thin enough to be a flamenco guitar. Doesn't mean that the action is set up lower as it would be on a flamenco guitar. Accounting for the quicker response time. I have seen flamenco guitarists live (so no video editing) that could play as fast or faster than this... Pretty impressive...
Not bad at all, much better than attempting flamenco. I would love to see more classical pieces performed or even original pieces rather than intermediate flamenco pieces.
Did anyone notice that he skips a 6thD at the end of the third bar and a D harmonic in the 12th fret at the middle of the fourth bar? Maybe he just wants highlight "il canto". Just curious.
It's not speed what makes a good guitarrist. Anyway, what's the problem with this guy playing fast? With appropriate training it can be achieved. Now, Del monte plays a very flamenco-like version with a great balance between cleanness and speed at a right tempo. I suspect, though, he's using a guitar built under flamenco standard, which permits "legattos" a bit easier than "classical" guitars and the strings are closer to the frets producing a characteristical "trasteo" (fret sound).
Love your music. I look forward very much to seeing you play in San Luis Obispo at La Guitarra. Don't worry about the couch-critics... they are mosquitos, and you are a master.
Absolutely brilliant, I agree with pilides2, this is the version I like best. Perhaps it takes some flamenco training to undertand this piece. Thanks for uploading it.
@nesipful, this video is not edited/speeded up. I downloaded this video from MelBay publications which I bought years ago in VHS tape format. If you don't believe it, you can buy the original VHS/DVD from MelBay and pop it in your home player to find out. This video plays just as fast as the original MelBay one. Please stop making accusations without any basis.
@nesipful when I encoded this video for Utube a few years ago, I had to drop the video frames from 30 fps to 15 fps. The loss of video frames in the middle contributes to a jittery video that doesn't seem smooth. I am not gonna spend more time trying to convince you that I didn't speed up the video, you are just being unfair. Before accusing me for speeding up the video which I have nothing to gain for it, why don't you watch the original Melbay video and find out for yourself.
@iflamenko The strobe like effect supports that the odd look is due to missing frames. And I've seen flamenco guitarists (live) that played this fast... Although at first it seemed almost too fast to believe... Wow! Truly an amazing player...
I've never heard Sevilla played this fast. However this guy really makes it work. Incredible technique and expression. Truly awesome. A remarkable virtuoso. Thanks for the inspiration!
the hardest part in the whole piece is at :44 , gets me everytime, its like i win it 70% of the time , but when you lose it there , grrrrrr, love it though
This is probably the most impressive interpretation of Sevilla that I have heard. Tempos are just fine, boys. Very expressively played. Eat your hearts out :p
It's all over the place. Nice technique, but fast is okay only if tempo is constant. Whether it's classical, flamenco, metal etc., music is not music unless tempo is constant.

Yes Adam is indeed a superb performer, technically probably in top ten pecentile of pro's. But in this piece he's plauying way to fast. Albeniz's Sevilla is based on the flamenco dance "sevillana" and the tempo should be "bailabile", something like a 100 metronome. Here he's clocking something like 130...!!!
Agree del Monte is an outstanding guitarist, techincally probably two percentile or something crazy like that. But on this piece he is going way way too fast. This Albeniz piece is fashioned after the flamenco "sevillana" dance, so the tempo must be more "bailabile" -- something like a 100 metronome. Here he's clocking about a 130..!!!
I'm surprised he played this that fast and didn't sacrifice tone. I would have liked to hear the middle section a little slower, but I enjoyed hearing such a different interpretation.

playing fast doesnt mean you're really good.. for me the only classical guitar player that is really good that play very fast is kazuhito yamashita.. he's not good, he's incredible..
Wow!!!!!!!!!! flawless. I think there is plenty of emotion in that guys! He is only making the dance just a little faster what is wrong with that. Besides after the night gets started you could use a little faster of a dance. Adam great job as usual!
First I find out that he's an amazing flamenco player, then a jazz guitarist and now this. He's a MONSTER. Yes, it's quicker than we're used to hearing., but the control, clarity and interpretation is a good as any classical player out there.

great but it is too fast, for me the whole rhythmic nature and flow of the piece is gone. Question is can he play it at the speed which realy makes it sing????????? See john williams for a piece with fantatic rhythm and a tempo that allows for albeniz' wonderful poetry to shine through. PS wish i could hammer it out at half this speed though!!!
He's really one of a very few guitarists than can make super fast playing sound effortless and controlled at any volume. Seamless and articulate. His technique is completely integrated into his musicality and vis-a-versa.
I cant imagine any room for improvement. The only version I have heard with impeccible rasguado and picado.I also love his dominance and use of tempo,it adds so much more feeling to it.Computerised rhythm can make music sound sterile. Thanks for sharing this.
But John is putting a lot more rasgueado on his Sevilla on his more recent gigs. The guy is still improving. But yeah, Adam version is one of the best I've heard.
This player has a fabulous classical technique and knows just how far to push the piece towards its flamenco roots without disrespect to the composers original intentions. Bravo.
you can't even compare this guy to Fisk. Del Montes' understanding and feeling of Spanish music is in another league. Great phrasing and very groovie where it needs to be, a bit rushy in spots but still the best!
I agree. Sevillanas is a dance and Adam is playing the feel of the rhythm. I can't shake my hips to Eliot Fisk's version. It has a certain rhythm to it but I can't dance to it.
the cadence at 1:04 is beautiful. the tone is so round and pure, and when contrasted with the "roughness" of the phrase before it, it stands out even more; this guy's a musician.
i read some of these comments and so i went to listen to john williams version then i came back and listened to this 1 again.i must say this guy is very good of course, but i prefer john williams.seems a lil slower which brings out the beauty of the song.
I've noticed this recurring phenomenon of acoustic guitar wannabe's criticising those who do with their nit picking, mealey mouthed clap-trap. Just put up or shut up whydontcha?
goddam classical purists, stick your snobbery up your guitar holes! I mean, remember where spanish guitar came from and how flamenco was part of it's background..you've grown so abstract from it's origins you;ve lost it's soul..
asterix2500, my Italian is a bit shaky, but I think you are saying that John William's performance of Sevilla ia better. Sevilla is one of my favorite pieces and I very much respect John Williams. In fact I have his CD and DVD where he plays this piece in both. I must say that Adam del Monte plays this piece by far better than John Williams. I also love the flamenco flair that Adam del Monte added to the piece. Adam, this is an incredible performance.
Awesome. I only wish you didn't pull around the tempo so much (accelerating and slowing down all the time)as this piece originates from the DANCE sevillanas and no one could ever dance to this performance as there is no regular tempo. Well, that's my two cents, otherwise you are a fantastic guitarist, beautiful sound.
Even though it is inspired by sevillanas, it's srill classical- romantic and the rubatos of this idiom can still apply. As for the the slow section it's like a "couple" singing which is very melizmatic and free. I also used to play it in tempo ( the slow part) and it always felt awkward. I think he's the most authentic and original, even if he's a bit rough around the edges.
everything about his hands is perfect. i think it's funny how the modern classical guitar technique, especially the right hand is pretty similar to what flamenco players have probly been doing all along.

Youre right, even John Williams version isnt very good, even though every other piece he plays is outstanding. This version is the best indeed.
RobertJV24 4 years ago
But John is putting a lot more rasgueado on his Sevilla on his more recent gigs. The guy is still improving. But yeah, Adam version is one of the best I've heard.

This player has a fabulous classical technique and knows just how far to push the piece towards its flamenco roots without disrespect to the composers original intentions. Bravo.

I cant believe Im going to write this...but I prefer Fisks version...still a good job here...impressive.
SixStringGunSlinger 4 years ago
you can't even compare this guy to Fisk. Del Montes' understanding and feeling of Spanish music is in another league. Great phrasing and very groovie where it needs to be, a bit rushy in spots but still the best!
ivahurghada 4 years ago
I agree. Sevillanas is a dance and Adam is playing the feel of the rhythm. I can't shake my hips to Eliot Fisk's version. It has a certain rhythm to it but I can't dance to it.

really doesnt keep the rythm...

the cadence at 1:04 is beautiful. the tone is so round and pure, and when contrasted with the "roughness" of the phrase before it, it stands out even more; this guy's a musician.
this makes me want to practice even more.

i read some of these comments and so i went to listen to john williams version then i came back and listened to this 1 again.i must say this guy is very good of course, but i prefer john williams.seems a lil slower which brings out the beauty of the song.

I've noticed this recurring phenomenon of acoustic guitar wannabe's criticising those who do with their nit picking, mealey mouthed clap-trap. Just put up or shut up whydontcha?
This guy is a brilliant musician...just face it.

goddam classical purists, stick your snobbery up your guitar holes! I mean, remember where spanish guitar came from and how flamenco was part of it's background..you've grown so abstract from it's origins you;ve lost it's soul..
vincent4500 4 years ago
Bleah, too fast. Takes all the beauty out of the piece.

amazing!
he visited in Israel, and someone played him the Allegro con spirito from Concierto de Aranjuez...
the way of his teaching and his playing is so special and modern. he just amazing!

finally a "Sevilla" with COJONES.ole!
dosporarriba 4 years ago
asterix2500, my Italian is a bit shaky, but I think you are saying that John William's performance of Sevilla ia better.

Thats what us classical players lack:
A BIT OF SERIOUS SPEED!!
It helps at times!
thebloodhound 4 years ago
Awesome. I only wish you didn't pull around the tempo so much (accelerating and slowing down all the time)as this piece originates from the DANCE sevillanas and no one could ever dance to this performance as there is no regular tempo. Well, that's my two cents, otherwise you are a fantastic guitarist, beautiful sound.
james987987 4 years ago
Even though it is inspired by sevillanas, it's srill classical- romantic and the rubatos of this idiom can still apply. As for the the slow section it's like a "couple" singing which is very melizmatic and free. I also used to play it in tempo ( the slow part) and it always felt awkward. I think he's the most authentic and original, even if he's a bit rough around the edges.
koolimooli 4 years ago
Fair enough. The slow section definitely has that 'duet' feeling about and I pull that bit around. Anyway, yes, defo original performance.
