im a US Army Infantry vet, Ive always been fascinated with this family of weapons. Does anyone here have experience with both the SA80 , and the M16/M4 family, and can tell me how they compare.
I'd like to test a l85 but there kinda rare around here. It probably has several common concepts with the AUG since they're both bullpups built with a variation of the Armalite AR18 operating system. I'd consider using 1 if 1 were available.
@collieoVTEC That is crazy. I'm left eye dominant. They actually teach us to switch to the weak hand to get better use of cover is necessary. For example, a right hander going around a corner to the right, can put the weapon in his left hand to get it out around the corner & keep more of his body behind the wall.
@Friedstuffsable Yeah, just the way it is. If you used it in your left hand you'd get a hot casing in your face and the cocking handle will break our jaw. Mind mate of mine in the RAF is left handed and he said you get use to it really quickly and it becomes second nature.
If it failed to feed the first time, probably won't the second time. Reposition the mag then cycle the action again so the mag is in a better position for it's cartridges to intersect the bolt.
(PS: you can tell from the simple bolt handle this is the maligned A1 variant).

The Aus forces adopted the rifle in 85 production started in 78 and the Aussies are part of the commonwealth which means we would have got it cheaper than the steyr. Again at the time of trials Steyr AUG was deemed a better all round weapon.
this smallarm looks good but is not that powerful and has an unreliable history, in the sense that the 5.56 round lacks stopping power. this is coming from a soldier in the gulf war.

If you read the test results and how the SAS had to borrow guns from the French (or another country) when all their guns malfunctioned on the day of a guerrilla attack in Sierra Leone , you'll know that even the A2 is just and improvement over something that should never have been made.
@CrabTastingMan The SAS never use the L85A2 as far as I've ever known. They primarily use M16's or something.
Anyway, as good as the SLR was for us, the SA80 needed to be made for the obvious reasons. It's also important for our Army to have a British made rifle for our infantry and marines.
Unfortunately Royal Ordnance is not exactly as good as FN or H&K but we did good.
I tell you what, after a few years in the paras I'll tell you what I think of the L85A2 (or A3 or whatever they'll have then)

If they have "reload or shoot problems" then it's probably down to it being the old A1 version, hasn't been cleaned properly or because whoever is firing it doesn't know how to.
The Kalashnikov is probably the most reliable in the world but the L85A2 is more than reliable enough for the army

@MrIhaveanopinion if you have ever used the L85 you would know that it suffers with stoppages alot and you see thats whats causing the problem. the guy is showing good handling skills for this weopon.

First of all, it is an extremely accurate weapon. Easily more accurate than an M16 a4 (which I HAVE fired, in the British Army you can fire one for a "pound a round").
Apparently during testing in Oman, the a2 passed as more reliable than the m4 and the c8. I will try to find a link.

@FatsoJetson USA are always going to sell more weapons systems than the British. They add huge political pressure behind the sales of thier weapons - they always have.
Secondly, the SA80 family is never going to be popular with foriegn forces. It is designed with British doctrine in mind (deploying a small well trained infantry using extremely accurate single shot firing. Backed up by a fire support group using idf).

BAE systems is one of the world's biggest arms manufacturers, Heckler and Koch used to be British owned a few years ago believe it or not. Like I said, British doctrine doesn't match other forces needs. Also bullpups are less in demand. Untill recently there were few attachments.
There is also the SA80 family's biggest drawback - it can only be fired from the right shoulder.

sometimes the problem is not in the gun, at these times the problem is with the bullet, or in lesser chances the soldiers holding the weapon.
the problem with the bullets are that sometimes they made curved, or the powder is to far from the cap... or there is not enough powder... don't judge the weapon before you test everything it uses
At the end of the day, it gets dark. But seriously, not one of us can say either weapon is better. It is a pointless and circular argument. Both weapons have been used on Ops. Both sides have a affinty to their chosen weapon. the only way that someone can gauge that one is better than the other is if someone independant does a ridiculously long and complicated test and does some kind of league table. Dude, it doesn't really matter. A weapon is only as good as the man firing it. The A2 is a far superior weapon than the A1. A couple of sensible mods from HK and it does what it's required to do. Add to that the new rail, sight and soon to arrive polymer magazines, it's a far better weapon than the one i was first issued in 1995. I and many other men I know have fired this weapon in anger and it hasn't failed me or us yet.
never strike the base of the magazine or itl likely cause a stoppage by knocking a bullet into the chamber baddly as SA80 mags are realy shit, 1:40 is good breathing though
oh and im not one of the cod fans who base all their knowledge on call of duty guns. I am very interested in guns in real life and love to shoot them.
This is one of my favorite rifles, i first saw it in a game, dont know what one, but i thought it was a fake gun, ive done alot of research on it and it seems pretty bad ass. I just bough an airsoft version of this gun

Excuse me my british friend the a1 and a2 were fairly good rifles but you brits seem to miss the point of the argument......that there are far superior rifles... if the sa80 was such a great choice of bullpup it would have been adopted by Ausie forces and all the armies using the Steyr AUG when they were looking for a bullpup design. You have to learn just cause things are British doesn't mean best. The updated model may be good but its still an sa80 and Call of Duty doesn't change that.

If you read the test results and how the SAS had to borrow guns from the French (or another country) when all their guns malfunctioned on the day of a guerrilla attack in Sierra Leone , you'll know that even the A2 is just and improvement over something that should never have been made.

@CrabTastingMan The SAS never use the L85A2 as far as I've ever known. They primarily use M16's or something.
Anyway, as good as the SLR was for us, the SA80 needed to be made for the obvious reasons. It's also important for our Army to have a British made rifle for our infantry and marines.
Unfortunately Royal Ordnance is not exactly as good as FN or H&K but we did good.
I tell you what, after a few years in the paras I'll tell you what I think of the L85A2 (or A3 or whatever they'll have then)

If they have "reload or shoot problems" then it's probably down to it being the old A1 version, hasn't been cleaned properly or because whoever is firing it doesn't know how to.
The Kalashnikov is probably the most reliable in the world but the L85A2 is more than reliable enough for the army
I suggest you get off call of duty and it's not a gun, it's a rifle.

@FatsoJetson I'm going to defend the l85a2 - as I genuinely love it.
First of all, it is an extremely accurate weapon. Easily more accurate than an M16 a4 (which I HAVE fired, in the British Army you can fire one for a "pound a round").
Apparently during testing in Oman, the a2 passed as more reliable than the m4 and the c8. I will try to find a link.

@FatsoJetson USA are always going to sell more weapons systems than the British. They add huge political pressure behind the sales of thier weapons - they always have.
Secondly, the SA80 family is never going to be popular with foriegn forces. It is designed with British doctrine in mind (deploying a small well trained infantry using extremely accurate single shot firing. Backed up by a fire support group using idf).

@FatsoJetson I think my point about the US selling more weapons is valid. Britain DOES sell weapons systems worldwide. BAE systems is one of the world's biggest arms manufacturers, Heckler and Koch used to be British owned a few years ago believe it or not. Like I said, British doctrine doesn't match other forces needs. Also bullpups are less in demand. Untill recently there were few attachments.
There is also the SA80 family's biggest drawback - it can only be fired from the right shoulder.

sometimes the problem is not in the gun, at these times the problem is with the bullet, or in lesser chances the soldiers holding the weapon.
the problem with the bullets are that sometimes they made curved, or the powder is to far from the cap... or there is not enough powder... don't judge the weapon before you test everything it uses

Both sides have a affinty to their chosen weapon. the only way that someone can gauge that one is better than the other is if someone independant does a ridiculously long and complicated test and does some kind of league table. Dude, it doesn't really matter. A weapon is only as good as the man firing it. The A2 is a far superior weapon than the A1. A couple of sensible mods from HK and it does what it's required to do. Add to that the new rail, sight and soon to arrive polymer magazines, it's a far better weapon than the one i was first issued in 1995. I and many other men I know have fired this weapon in anger and it hasn't failed me or us yet.

i can see there are people here who have actually fired and sa80 but i can also see there are many sad motherfuckers who feel the have an opinion on weaponry because they have played call of duty!!! I have not had the chance to fire the a1 but was trained on the a2 and that beauty went on to keep me and my muckers safe in both iraq and afghanistan without incident!!! New ras upgrades are some gucci kit aswell!!

Excuse me my british friend the a1 and a2 were fairly good rifles but you brits seem to miss the point of the argument......that there are far superior rifles... if the sa80 was such a great choice of bullpup it would have been adopted by Ausie forces and all the armies using the Steyr AUG when they were looking for a bullpup design. You have to learn just cause things are British doesn't mean best. The updated model may be good but its still an sa80 and Call of Duty doesn't change that.
