Joan Sutherland is one of the greatest singers who ever lived. She sings Norma fantastically. Her soprano is rock solid, beautiful, silvery, dramatic, tender and languid. Her coloratura is without equal. I find her interpretation heartbreaking and very connected. A different set of fabulous superlatives describes the Normas of other 20th century sopranos whom I equally adore...Callas, Caballe, Ponselle. God bless them all. They all have my ear, my heart and my thanks. Brava, Joan!!!
Beautiful but, Sorry Joan, Caballé sang this even better in Liverpool, 1992, she had the feeling, the voice, the interpretation, she became Norma; sorry Joan fans, but this Norma sounds like she's made from Cardboard, I don't sense the feeling Norma needs in this Cavatina; it is indeed very beautiful, but not enough to be considered "the best Casta Diva of all times"
Beautitul, yes, some gleaming high notes (is this in the higher key?), technically perfection...but the diction is zero and it's as dull as dishwater. I never took Sutherland seriously as an operatic performer, just as a supreme vocalist. Callas remains the Norma (and Violetta) with whom all "the others" compare, and are found wanting. But...if you are looking for the most beautiful, poetic, lunar Casta Diva on record...Caballe and the Mistral live in Orange 1974. Incomparable. Period. Basta.
dont you just hate the people who come on here and criticize and all, yes i know everybody has freedom to their own opinion. But show some Dam respect to the artists, she in the end made millions doing what she loved. if you dont like, then move on, dont leave your negative comments! Sickens me that people are just jealous. I love Joan, yeah maybe she didnt sing some roles amazingly, but she as a person and an overall singer, musician and artist, is absolutely amazing.
Okay, girls, now calm down. I think there's room for both Maria AND Joan up in heaven...Maria probably doesn*t think so; I'll grant you that, but I think there is. I love them both. Is that allowed? Or am I not officially an opera queen if I don't choose one over the other?
@gerrypepper Agreed. In Callas' prime while La Scala was her " home " for ten years, the Italians said she was " not human ". No one has, or ever will equal Callas DaVina.
In my opinion, her recording of this is one of the greatest pieces of music, ever recorded and sold. She's so PERFECT here, she almost sounds inhuman....alien-like.
Sorry to all of you. The Callas Norma I saw at La Scala in January 1956 was on a completely different and vastly superior both technical and artistic level. As were her Anna Bolena, Traviata and Medea that I saw. Sutherland performs the aria extremely well from a technical point of view but she could be singing her grocery list for all one can tell from the colour, shading and feeling in her voice. Beautiful singing of beautiful notes isn't opera. Opera is musical drama. Where is the drama??
@MrAndredekock Of course she had beautiful voice, no-one denies that, and she produces some very lovely sounds with it, but If you can't hear that the whole effect is as flat as a pancake I can't help you there.!! Of course a mediocre orchestral performance is no help either!
@Ariadne7710 You had to hear her live.As with Nillson and Corelli, you just can't appreciate what that sound was like or what it did to an audience in the house. The size, the beauty and the perfection of it were simply mesmerizing. The first (and unfortunately only)Norma I ever heard from her (in NY)was like being on drugs. You truly drifted off into another world, and the next thing you knew, the performance was ever and three thousand people were screaming their heads off.
@curtde: I am an eternal fan of Sutherland's and certainly wouldn't call this performance dull and flat, although a bit shrill at times. But I have to agree that the most haunting and beautiful performance of Casta Diva is with Caballe, especially her magical 1974 performance in Orange.
I am sorry but I find her performance so thunderous and without sentiment.. Hear the Caballe, and you will find feeling or Angela Geougeu. Feeling is more important that ear-piercing screaming.
One of, if not the best Collartura Sopranos of the 20th century. She has so much passion and feeling in this version of Casta Diva. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform this and several other great operas at the Sydney Opera Houes in the 1970s and 80s just before she retired. She now lives out her life in Switzerland and turns 84 this year, although not in the best of health we wish her well.
I had the great good fortune to see Sutherland and Horne in the Met production as an adolecent. It was my frist experience of attending Opera and it left an indelible mark on my life. I don't think we will live to again see singers like those of that period. Sutherland's singing has a depth and warmth that almost always puts me on the verge of tears. Definitely the greatest Norma of all time.

The irony here is that Joan as Norma is singing to a goddess, while all the time sounding like one herself!

Awesome power...but Sills tears your heart out, far more emotional and soul grabbing...but Sutherland has that awesome power.

@ericscam2 Nor sills or caballe have the voice size and power needed to sing norma, that's why evertime they sang it, their voices went downhill.
