Jackson C Frank had such a tragic life but what a song to leave behind. This is okay but Bert Jansch's version is on another plane. God bless you, Bert.
ok,,so i was asked to go listen to a band that said if i like nick drake,,i will like that. I went,.I listened and,,,NOT! not even close but keep working at it.
I think Nick Drake is a real artist in every sense. His work is amazing and sincere. I'd like to invite all you good people that like this music to check my band's music - Mob of God - on this channel. We're just looking to be heard by people that listen to music we respect and consider is great. Honestly we're just looking to be heard by people with good taste (and if you're here, you're in for sure). Our influences range from folk to Metal, from the 60's to the 00's. Thanks & Peace.
i love nick drake but i just dont think this song suits him. apart from the original there are a band called headless heroes who have a gorgeous cover of this song which i adore. easily the best cover of blues run the game I have heard.
@theorangebox999 Jackson C Frank is the originator of this song (not that you don't know this, I'm just stating it for those that don't know). Simon and Garfunkel also do a gorgeous version. Frank's first and best known album was produced by Simon. Frank's life was filled with tragedy and depression. His life story would make a great movie. One of the best unknown artists of the 20th century.
I think Jackson C. Frank's version is the better of the two, his voice just seems a bit harder and it compliments the feel of the song more richly than Drake. Nick Drake was a wonderful artist though.
@BordumSux2 I feel these are almost 2 completely different songs. The ultimate compliment to the Jackson C. Frank original. The tempo, picking pattern, vocal tone of Nick Drake is so unique it takes on a life of it's own and is hard to choose a favorite. These are two of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.I get different, but equally intense emotions from each of these songs. Two passed artists that should be passed along...
I would like to hear a good bluesman do this tune. I think we are yet to hear the best version of this song because the right person has not covered it yet. Between Drake and Frank I would say I like Drakes version best.
This is a great cover. The funny thing about this song is that there are a billion covers out there, yet no one dears to alter it more than just adjusting it to their voice.
Wow. I've listened to this song in different forms my whole life. First it was Simon & Garfunkle, then Jansch, then Jackson C. Frank and then I went looking for more versions and came upon John Renbourne and Counting Crows. I think I can stop looking now. A real legend of a musician.
@briangroovy Whenever I hear this song by ND I have to play it several times.I can't get enough in just over 2 minutes. One of my favorite songs of all time.Imagine ND at home fiddling with this on a home recorder.Better than most overproduced studio music I have heard with all it's multi-tracking,effects etc..When a musician like ND puts emotion into a song nothing can duplicate that. Just him, his guitar and his heart...
It's hard to say that anybody could out perform a Jackson C. Frank song better than Jackson C. Frank. Both Drakes' and Franks' recordings are amazing. Never liked the Jansch one too much (Jansch is a much better guitarist than singer)

A lot of people around at the time were a bit in awe of Jack Frank, aka The Unluckiest Man in The World. He was American, "different" and he'd suffered. It set him apart
Nick's version is a pastiche of the original. It owes much more to Jackson than it does to Nick.
I thought Nick was maybe a bit under-rated at the time. I think he's vastly over-rated now.
I think the irony, Spike (and part of the allure) is that his complete nonrecognition when he was younger has added that mystique to his newly realized wealth of recognition. It's like, for him to really be famous he had to be unfamous throughout his life. I don't think he's overrated, though. Technically speaking, he's still stuck in cult status. And his style is unbelievable. It's a well-trained, disciplined guitarist that can pull off a Nick Drake song.

search nicolas and the iceni summer's end. they write beautiful folk which has echoes of drake and denny.

In my opinion Nick Drake's version of this song is the only one which is equally good to the original by Jackson C.Frank:)

It sounds like the song is singing itself. There are so many versions of this song that are all brilliant but this just sounds so natural.

Where did this one come from
spaceword 4 years ago
This song is from Jackson C frank
he used to hang out in the late 60s' with basically everyone who covered his songs, namely: Bert Jansch, John Renhbourn, Nick Drake and Paul Simon...
If you want to hear the original, search for "Blues Run The Game Deluxe" and you'll end up on a re-release they did.
Peace to his soul.
