The reason Sam never returned home was because was a season finale and the series got cancelled before we knew the actual ending so we may asume that yeah, Sam does in fact returne home.

yeah, the last episode is called "mirror image" its acually a really good episode! Sam never returnes home, but Al goes back to his home. YOu can still watch episodes on the channel ION. Its on every weekday at 6. Or 5..but its 6 where i live.

The idea for Quantum Leap was originally to be the basis for the Battlestar Galactica series in 1980. Baltar went back in time to try to advance Earth's technology so they could defeat the Cylons. Apollo traveled back to stop him, with Starbuck going back and forth between the past and present to relay important information. The network didn't like the time travel idea when they saw the pilot, so it was scrapped and later re-used for Quantum Leap.
