I've love this song. I was tiny -(5/6yrs) I'd sing 'When I get to Heaven..etc. It would freak my mum out 'cos' I could get my voice to go really deep. and the sentiment was not exactly cheerfull!!
My father loved this song. He always sang along. Sadly today twenty years ago he celebrated his last birthday. I love this song, but it also brings tears.
The most poetic part in the movie. None of the actors in this musical parody could sing, but Lee Marvin's gravelly rendending about the pathos of life that is the crux of this film is so effing beautiful.... He did see combat. Unlike every Republican President since Eisenhower.
@SirDcitykity ....again and again what are the facts? Four presidents have seen combat since Ike, two Republicans (Ford and Papa Bush) and two Democrats (JFK and LBJ). All were in the service in some capacity except for two DEMOCRATS (Clinton and Obama), not really any surprise there.
Lee Marvin saw actual combat in World War II and that's one of the reasons he did not suffer fools gladly in work or in life, especially poseurs and phonies. They do not make 'em like Lee Marvin any more, that's for sure.
Lee Marvin saw actual combat as a WWII vet and that's one of the reasons he did not suffer fools gladly in work and life, especially poseurs and phonies. They do not make 'em like that any more, that's a for sure.
For anyone over 50 and who saw Lee Marvin in some variety of the roles he played throughout his career, watching him 'sing' "...wandrin' star..." puts a fine exclamation point on his versatility and....the lyrics make anyone think about their life and their destiny. Among his life's accomplishments is his service to our nation as a Marine, seeing combat on Saipan. A truly remarkable man.
@buggrit3010 A terrible song - but Clint gave it all he had! Pity he never sang any GOOD songs - he had quite a good singing voice. Richard Chamberlain had a fair singing career for a while - and he sang FLAT!
Number 1 for 3 weeks in Feb 1970. Followed by Simon and Garfunkel's' Bridge over troubled water', for another 3 weeks. FFS those were the days when we had music. As MR T might add, 'I pity the fools who buy music today', cos it's absolute shit, that last bit was me, not Mr T ;-)
