great to see how agile and vital the catholic church in the usa is. the joy and happiness the archbisohp is sending out is fantastic! thank you! that is how the catholic church has to be like. new york is a great example for some other parishes, not only in the usa..
Whoever is singing, geeze, try to sing in the same key... or keep your mouth shut and stop the aural massacre into an open microphone to record this for the future...The Lord gave you a mind, use it.
Awesome video thank you. I give you five stars. I m from Paris France, I love and often come in NY and in the United States of America. St Patrick's cathedral is great
I agree, no recording equipment should be used in a place of worship unless permission has otherwise been given, especially in a catholic cathedral, its not a bloody museum
This was a disgrace the irish national anthem should never be sung in english. Having been to mass many times in st pats i heve never witnessed such disrespect for the sacrifice of the mass that takes place there on a regular basis. cheering applauding etc Rich people having pre booked seats at the top an absolute disgrace.
God & Country go hand-in-hand. It's because of our free countries that God can be worshipped without persecution, and it's because of God's grace that we have free countries...it seems natural to me to honor our countries and God at the same time. The presbyterian church i grew up in did not allow patriotic songs either...i still don't see why.
Interesting to hear the Irish Anthem sung in Church - its never sung in church here in Ireland - far too secular! Incidentally, the last time I was near a bishop when the national anthem was played he removed his zuchetto (skullcap) - the cardinal did not!! That would be a major breach of protocol here!!
How many know that St. Patrick's day was observed in NYC before there was a size-able Catholic contingent in the city? Since Ireland is not only RC why isn't this an ecumenical service to represent all Irish? A number of Irish patriots were non Catholic.
Well, this is the largest cathedral in the us, so it tends to draw people to it for services. As for the settlers etc, america is a melting pot and traditions grow change and fade over time. As far as the performance, this is spectacular. And as far as it being sung in irish, not many irish descended people actually speak irish, especially in the usa. The meaning if an anthem remains unchanged whatever language it's sung in. :)
You're just jealous because you couldn't translate it yourself. At closing time in my local, I'm the one who mutters along for the whole song until those final words where I can be heard with thunderous gusto!!
Actually, the Soldier's Song was composed by Peadar Kearney in English originally. It was subsequently translated into Irish. The part of the tune which is the national anthem is the chorus. The verse before is seldom played, certainly never at official events or sports matches, etc.
I belong to a large Cathoolic, Italian/Irish parish with tremendous musical talents.
For this past 4th of July, Sunday hymns were:
National Anthem (with procession and Knights of Columbus),America the Beautiful,Battle Hymn of the Republic,God Bless America
Between the congregation, choir, organ and instrumentalists; I thought we'd raise the roof! Quite an inspirational Mass! If you can't see it played beyond a ballpark you need to live a little!
wow you can hear Edward Cardinal Egan's coarse Chicago accent thunder through that Cathedral. I normally attend the Sunday Mass there at St. Pats and it's strong lol. The organ sounds beyond amazing, I want one of those lol

only thing better would be to include the Charles Gounod March (the anthem of the Vatican City)

Well, St Patrick is venerated in the Anglican Church also, so they are allowed to celebrate his life also!!

This IS NOT the national anthem of Ireland. It is in Irish, this is in English. Disrespectful to the Irish people.

Forget that comment: "You obviously don't go to Chruch much..."
Like the other commentary--THIS WAS PLAYED AFTER THE MASS WAS OVER...
Grow up and get a life...
God--is anything, anything not subject to some of these imbecilic rantings.'
A GREAT POSTING....and video
Kudos to the poster..!!

Why is it horrible? The Mass had already ended so there's nothing wrong with having the Anthems sung there.
