The live without walls most likely means that since The PC is a lot more open platform than the mac and has a lot more market share there is more available software, so you're not limited to the same amount of software as mac users.

A 15" MacBook Pro on macmall is 1799 after rebate. A 4GB DDR3 RAM kit is about 65$ on newegg. Not bad for a system that can run all three editors, FCP, Avid and Premiere. I know, I have configured many of these laptops for editing clients of mine. Open and shut case.
That's still $1864 for a 2.4ghz laptop. For the same price you could get a 2.93ghz dual core or a 2.2ghz Quad core laptop with 6GB ram, a bigger HDD, better graphics card and a bluray drive.
Why would you pay more for something that isn't as good? For the specs on that Macbook pro, its probably equal to any $1000 Laptop, which means you're paying $799 extra for the OS and all the "free" software bundled with it.
I'll gladly pay an extra $800 for the OS. It's stable, it's free of viruses and maintenance, and it works exactly how it's supposed to. Besides, when a new Microsoft OS comes out, it's garbage, slow, usually requires hardware upgrades and is another $500 or so by itself. Long term, Mac is cheaper and FAR better.
To say stability and ease of use isn't worth $800 when you have to pay something close to $500-600 for a very unstable Windows anyway, is crazy. Yes, Linux is very good but it's not compatible with most companys products and there isn't enough open source software for Linux to be too useful to every day users. OS X is perfect for nearly everyone and is very stable.

You do realize that there are lots of video editing software out there right? And she says she's professional so she probably wouldn't even settle for iMovie or whatever. There's Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere and tons more. The live without walls most likely means that since The PC is a lot more open platform than the mac and has a lot more market share there is more available software, so you're not limited to the same amount of software as mac users.

Other than the case and the proprietary hardware lock Mac hardware is identical to PC's BUT, you can get PC's cheaper, and they don't even need to be crappier in any way, it gives you more options, and if you know what you're doing you build your own computer like me. And don't tell me you can download great software for free... you cannot get the kind of software she needs already installed on the computer. You can get "ok" free software, but nothing even "decent" like iMovie 09 is. And for burning dvds iDVD is a great app!

A 15" MacBook Pro on macmall is 1799 after rebate. A 4GB DDR3 RAM kit is about 65$ on newegg. Not bad for a system that can run all three editors, FCP, Avid and Premiere. I know, I have configured many of these laptops for editing clients of mine. Open and shut case.

That's still $1864 for a 2.4ghz laptop. For the same price you could get a 2.93ghz dual core or a 2.2ghz Quad core laptop with 6GB ram, a bigger HDD, better graphics card and a bluray drive.
Why would you pay more for something that isn't as good? For the specs on that Macbook pro, its probably equal to any $1000 Laptop, which means you're paying $799 extra for the OS and all the "free" software bundled with it.

I'll gladly pay an extra $800 for the OS. It's stable, it's free of viruses and maintenance, and it works exactly how it's supposed to. Besides, when a new Microsoft OS comes out, it's garbage, slow, usually requires hardware upgrades and is another $500 or so by itself. Long term, Mac is cheaper and FAR better.

Linux is stable and free of viruses (or at least as "virus free" as OSX) but no one with any common sense would pay $800 for it.
Also Vista Premium was around $150 when it came out, and the system requirements of Vista basic are barely higher than OSX.
If you prefer OSX to Windows or Linux thats fine, it has it's advantages and disadvantages, but to say it's woth $800 is just stupid.

To say stability and ease of use isn't worth $800 when you have to pay something close to $500-600 for a very unstable Windows anyway, is crazy. Yes, Linux is very good but it's not compatible with most companys products and there isn't enough open source software for Linux to be too useful to every day users. OS X is perfect for nearly everyone and is very stable.

Also i just want to add, at what point did she mention using windows movie maker? If she's a film maker she likely uses a professional editing software. Movie maker is a simple, basic editing program designed for home users just like Imovie.
Avid, Adobe, Sony and many others make professional level video editing software and are all available on Windows or Mac
