Its hard to learn this alternate picking. I always do a downstroke on the higher strings and upsreotke the lower strings so always moving down A forward and up backward to the E6. But always down,up down, up, down, up......its hard to me..... Or i have some bad habits?...dunno.
One thing i understood in guitar is that anatomy of hand can add/limit your progress.Id like to see how many guitar heroes woud exist if everyone had the same hands scale..
To all you with cheap guitArs...not 100 dollar cheap but 300 cheap i bet you pg could come to your house and play your guitar cllose to that fast stop getting all crazy over the gear 2500 dollar guitar will play faster sure to. A pro but trust me if your not fast on the 300 model your not going to be fast on the 2500 guitar..practice
Paul gilbert is humble and kind, and most of all, he is a legend. This lesson on legato is good for all genres...A lot of guitarist begin playing without any legato, picking every note. If you're a beginner watching this, practice this everyday and apply it to almost everything you play in order to play smoother runs. Use your pick to accentuate notes you want to stand, strengthen your picking hand for speed using hammer-ons and pull-offs. Thanks for posting METALdisiple.
"Hi I'm Paul Gilbert this is my lesson on guitar ready for it?.......You will never be as good as me, See wasn't that easy hit the showers Bitch" That's basically how i felt after watching this.
He plays it so fast and then says, "Now let me play it up to speed"... Are you fucking kidding me?! You can go faster than that?! This guy has alien DNA in his body.
i noticed theres a lot of lower price guitars that have the fret bars slightly higher than average (like my Tele) which makes such picking stuff a lot easier :)
I love these lessons with Mr Gilbert, just one thing here: Has anyone noticed that when he shows each pattern separately he starts with a downstroke, but when he plays it all together it´s just the first pattern that starts with a downstroke... the rest starts with a upstroke. Hmm, but a fine exercise it is! :)
Anyone can set up just about any electric guitar to play well.. just practice more. The guitar you play has very little to do with what you get out of it or how well you can play.
Sure a wide and flat Ibanez neck is a blast ..but Richie Kotzen kills on a Standard tele neck.. as do lots of other people, Strats as well.. "C" or "D' profile,,,
Paul would tell you "keep practicing'.. he's an admitted guitaraholic...
and contrary to popular belief he did not emerge from the whom playing 64th notes
at 3:16 i thought he was playing it up to speed and was thinking "well that's not too bad" when he suddenly says "now let me play it up to speed" x) brilliant
Doing this is easy. Doing this with an unmodified Squier Stratocaster isn't so easy. Doing it as fast as Paul is difficult. Doing this as fast as Paul with an unmodified Squier Stratocaster is VERY difficult. But i'm trying to do it. Cool anyway :D
@Z4kW0lf I have a made in mexico fender strat and its not nearly as easy as it would be on something more meant for shred because the actions not that good and the neck isnt as fast....But props to you cause it makes me feel veryyy luckyyy hahaha :P
@Z4kW0lf You should really try an Ibanez guitar. Even the ARX series, cheap guitars, sound and are actually better to play than this crap of yours... and mine...
(i'm seriously considering the example of Hendrix and make a hell of a fire out of it!)
@Z4kW0lf Well, about the skills... i've got an electric acoustic guitar Yamaha APX500 OBB and it REALLY makes the difference. It's not only the guitarist that makes the guitar, but also the other way around.
@Z4kW0lf if your squier is really hard to play take it into your closest music shop and have them do a set-up on it. modifying it really won't do much for playability. Most people new to guitar use a guitar that has bad action and this is only adds to the difficulty of learning to play. if you can't spend 30$ on it just find an online tutorial
I worked in a music store from 1993-2000. People would ask what instructional video was good. I always told people to buy Paul Gilbert's videos coz he explains things well. I sold a ton of his videos and students would come back and thank me. Paul teaches well. I gave Paul a standing ovation the day the dj on the radio announce Mr Big's "To Be With You" was #1 worldwide. Paul can shred and touch us all...all of us. Not many shredders can write hits.
Actually he's playing at 340 bpm and 11.5 notes per sec. That's insane and he's not playing the notes on the same string like that flight of the bumblebee crap where u just play on a few strings and slide ur chord shape from fret to fret
@dharmana12 His action is REALLY LOW - you can hear this - most guys that play really quick, as far as I can tell, have super low action. I do 11 notes per second on my "Bet You Can't Play This" video. This is possible for me on my guitars that I set up, but not on a guitar right off the wall at guitar center! The down side to the low action is that bending and vibrato are harder to control. Get a good tech or luthier to level your frets for shred action and maybe you can up your BPM too.
He's playing at 300 bpm or 10 notes per sec. Problem is only the elite can play that fast, got something to do with genetics apart from practice and hard work. Its like quite a few people can run a mile in 5 sec but only the elite can do a mile run in less than 4 sec who are only a handfull in this world. Anyone with years of practice can do 250 bpm but for 300 bpm you have to be gifted genetically to have those fast fingers and co-ordination at blazing speeds. So its not your fault but ur genes
Man, the best way to go fast is to practice accurately with a metronome. Try to increase your speed while maintaining the same accuracy. As Bruce Lee once said, "If you want to go fast, go slow".
lets see, 4 months ago i posted that comment up there saying it was hard has fuck..... and today i sit infront of this computer not even 1/3 the speed of super jesus Paul Gilbert....
guys, doesnt mean you cant get it now means its hard, its easy , just go slowly at it, its a matter of your hands getting used to the pattern, like for example, technical difficulties, around the 17th count theres this decending pattern, its bloody easy, but you cant do it all in one try cos your hands wont be used to the pattern, now since you guys learnt the pattern all thats left is to practice that pattern, speed is already in-built in the hands all you need is some getting used to.
One thing I quite can´t really comprehend is the fact that most teaching books as well as teacher videos continuously tell us to do the up-down-up-down picking when rock stars like in this video do up-down-up-up!! aaargh!! Who do we believe? Is there a right way to do it?
@zurriagazo71 Yes, there is a right way to do it; or perhaps not necessarily "right", but always a most efficient way. Be aware that this will not usually be strict alternate picking, as you have noticed. It all depends on what you are doing. In general, you'll want to find the stroke pattern that requires the least energy / movement unless you are performing certain strokes for musical reasons, such as accents or a specific tone.
Paul is beginning to look like a barista from Boarders or some shit, but dammit, he hasn't lost a fucking thing when it comes to playing the guitar. What a bad ass, man!
wow this is like gold.. it's so useful & awsome. thanks man. i've been looking for some tricks for the minor pentatonic & now i found them. he's definately one of my online teachers now. does anyone know his original profile on youtube ?
@129jasaxos yea theres 1 pentatonic scale, but you can play the scale anywhere on the neck while staying in 1 key. theres different positions of the scale all across the neck for each key.
How the fuck do you play that fast?????? Lol. Btw, I ordered the varigrip exerciser to help improve my finger strength, hopefully improving my speed. Will that work well, or is that thing a piece of $hit?
Well if you don't no what Ionian means then you sure as hell don't know what Mixolydian means. That paints you as an ignorant prick when spouting off about Paul Gilbert not being qualified to speak of blues. You know nothing about music. Any BLUES song you like to listen to can be played on demand and at the request of Mr. Gilbert and he can do anything you like while eating a cheese burger. I don't even think you could figure out the strings if I told you Eat All Dead Gophers Before Easter.
@ragingstorm33.... How the hell are you going to learn to master the "Aeolian" mode if you didn't learn how to spell it first Magoo? That BB King did play the blues.... and he turned over in his grave when Joe Satriani did it better then him.
Am I the only one who thinks that it would be insane if Paul Gilbert were on speed? He is the Bruce Lee of guitar. Slow it down, and it's still insanely fast.
@Fjord76 Awe sweetheart... I know that it's hard to hear the melody when the notes are going fast if you are retarded and tone deaf. You should just begin with the Ionian and listen to Barney. I'll tell you what Ionian means if you make an intelligent comment. By the way idiot, the 857 people statistic is an obvious lie for a vid that has 346,628 views. However genius.... by all means, play this live and show us how it is done and why it is so simple. The audience is waiting sweetheart.
To be honest the only part that I learned from in this video was how he was picking it, (his particular pattern, which is awesome) the rest was just pure inspiration :D Good luck everyone.
Great teacher.

The audience is waiting sweetheart.
fishguru73 1 year ago
@fishguru73 Why would I want to know what Ionian means or why would I want to hear your explanation of Ionian? (that could be funny though)
Why 346 628 views would be an evidence of any kind of talent ?
Who ,in the real world (you know, before & after YouTube), knows Paul Gilbert anyway ?

To be honest the only part that I learned from in this video was how he was picking it, (his particular pattern, which is awesome) the rest was just pure inspiration :D Good luck everyone.
