It's not a bugle, it's a 3 valve trumpet. I actually believe it's a cornet, which had rounder tubing and a mellow tone. Louis Armstrong played a cornet.

When I was in high school I would eat lunch at our house and Mom always had the radio tuned to KVOO in Tulsa Oklahoma. Bob Wills played there every day. I remember them advertiing Saturday night dances at the Trianon ball room in Tulsa I knew the words to just about every song they did especially Roly Poly, Daddys little fatty, and Time changes everything.
You're awesome for posting this. Thanks for doing it!
I could've swore I watched a Durango Kid movie where Bob Wills got in a fight. My favorite part of the Durango Kid series was hearing Tommy Duncan/Bob Wills as well as Smiley Burnette perform their numbers.
I love the Durango movies. I have this one, but I want the two with Ernest Tubb and the three or four with Merle Travis. Of course, since I was about 16, the words "Merle Travis" were magic. I have this particular movie on tape. Wouldn't take $1000 for it if I couldn't replace it.
I have this and most Durangos on tape, and have wondered where those twin guitars and Leon McAuliff (sp) got their electric sounds before there was electricity. Also would like to find the two movies with Ernest Tubb.
Pretty neat clip. They've got quite a trumpeter, considering he can get all that out of a bugle! :)
Do you have any clips from Starrett's earlier movies (1930s) with the Sons of the Pioneers singing? I'd love to see some of their numbers from those movies.
I keep an eye open for Starrett's earlier films on the Encore Westerns channel, but they're few and far between. One film in particular, "Stranger from Texas", has a great tune by the Sons of the Pioneers that I want to get a copy of someday. I'll post it here if Encore broadcasts the film again.

You act like electricity didn't show up til 1980.

@cindyshealed The anachronism was in the movie, not in the band.
