Bob Dylan wrote this song originally for anyone who does'nt know. He covers this song very well and he does it in his own way. He is very similar to bob in many ways. I think any bob dylan fan can find something in the tallest man on earth that we never thought we could find ever again.
The tune is also reminiscent of "House of the Rising Sun" (perhaps not indicated as strongly by this particular version) if not so much by melody, by that sense of longing, regret, remorse -- there is an Irish folk song (which also traversed the Atlantic) called Moonshiner with similar lyrics about being a drunk but also with a verse about being a gambler.
All of these songs that travelled Ireland and travelled America are obviously strongly interconnected and once sprang from the same well
Most likely this an American folk song based on an Irish song -- a fairly common trajectory for lots of American folk music.
The song is kind of interesting for me being Irish --- looking at it like you would a cross section, you can see all sorts of inluences and also songs influenced by the song.
"spent all my money on whiskey on beer" - lyrics plucked straight from "(I've been a) Wild River..."
the origins of the song are a bit disputed. i believe it's an old american folk song, although others believe it's irish. it was actually performed by delia murphy in ireland 30 years before dylan. but you might be right, i might be wrong. but it's a great song, and i think kristians version of the song are much better than dylans, although i'm a huge dylan fan.
The lyrics on the first verse are actually quite similar to The Wild Rover: "I've been a wild rover for many long years, I've spent all my money on whiskey and beer". Any relation with this song would argue that Moonshiner is Irish. But I don't really know either. Beutifully preformed here anyway:)
I just had this amazing artist here at my place, the girl who did the light had a little videocamera next to her - you can search on "tallest man Bollnäs Världen".
as far as I know the origin of this song is not confirmed, some claim it is an american folk song while others insists that it is in fact Irish, it goes back far earlier than Dylan in both nations though. Sung by Dylan indeed but not written by him.
@SeijuraHiko well since the first moonshiners in america were irish and scotch it could be both an irish andan early american song the first moonshiners date back to the late 1700's and early 1800's when the colonist attempted to tax moonshiners.
Love this guy, just have to. Not hard music, just his command of what he does is so fine, so very fine. A true performer, a true artist. Can't get enough. Hope he makes albums forever!
i uploaded a better audio quality one to my profile, check it out

Uncle Tupelo's version of this song is pretty excellent as well, don't you think? Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar were a damn good duo . . . .

@jhatfield89 Bob dylan didn't write this song. This is a old folk song Dylan also covered once in his youth.

Dude, you are lame. What the hell are you writing? Bob wrote this song? Wrong. "Find simliarities". Bob can't be compared.

I fucking wish. His songs are built in the craziest fucking tunings, this one is obviously WAY odder than the rest

Roscoe Holcomb's version is pretty amazing. I'm pretty the song was an Irish folk song before it became a bluegrass staple.

I know the Clany Brothers have a version that predates Dylans.

dave van ronk (who dylan used to watch at the gaslight back in the day, even played with him) did a pretty wicked version on one of his cds.
