The defunishon of "Selling out" refers to the compromising of one's integrity, morality and principles in exchange for money, 'success' (however defined) or other personal gain. It is commonly associated with attempts to increase mass appeal or acceptability to mainstream society. And I agree with it.
Just because its a comsumeristic does not mean we have to accept it. Yes money can be important the the trick is not falling into the trap of using as scoreboard points for your life. We in the You tube comunity were an untapped source of profit for advertisers. The best way to prevent ourselves selling out is to only agree to plug products we accually use and like thus keeping us happy and insuring companies have to make good products.
Well said.. I think Ford is doing it perfectly with the Fiesta. They gave us this car with complete freedom. I've said what I like about the car, and I've said what I dislike about the car. They don't want us to lie, or make commercials for them. They want us to have fun with it & be honest.
And I don't have a problem with any advertising like that, or even a bloggers having ads. But when they fake review or lie about loving a product, that's when the sell out line is crossed . - Jordan
First off great video response. I believe that "selling out" is changing something, whether it be yourself, a product or your music in a way that you do not agree with simply for the purpose of money. For instance, people in the music business sometimes change the way their music sounds just to get on the radio, to get more fans in order to get more money. In my opinion that is "selling out". As for advertising, it is definitely necessary or else people would not know about you.
I definitely agree with your definition of selling out. I... was gonna say something else, but I can't seem to remember what it is now, so I guess I'll just have to get back to you. Pahaha. Thanks so much for watching though! 8D
Though i agree with music i think advertising is okay in moderation but the way youtube is doing it it is just execive. If you watch a tv show, for example. There would be about 9 different comerical on that video of the same thing stoping the flow. Then on a lot of popular video there are these little 20% ad's that the user didn't even agree to put on there video. It happened to me a lot of times. If you go to comedy central they only but comerical inbetween the usual breaks. no
I was just saying, I think it's about integrity. If you promote products that you like, even though the company pays you, you're still being honest. I think his lordship has that integrity.
So, are you from Minnesota? I shall have to remember to invite you to the next gathering. we have many awesome Youtubers here in the Twin Cities!
I am indeed from Minnesota! If you're a Nerdfighter and/or on the Ning, we're planning a little gathering at the State Fair for this August! Want me to link you? <333
I agree that selling out is promoting goods/services/ideas that do not agree with your personal morals/values. Truly, money matters -- one alters the flow of capital by promoting something and by buying it, so we have a responsibility to alter that flow in a responsible manner. So I am okay with a YouTuber promoting something like DFTBA Records, which they most likely enjoy and support, but not so much Walmart or other irresponsible corporations.
I think that that's one of the biggest problems - there's like this problem in finding a middle-ground between loving and worshiping money, and absolutely hating it, y'know? But that's just not realistic. Money is necessary and important, but it should consume EVERYTHING.
...Unless you're socialist, according to my brother. But we won't go there. XD
At the end you asked how we'd define selling out. I think that you hit the nail on the head when you said giving the viewers something they don't want. Viewers of neirmon's vlogs would presumably want to know about his album. Ditto with my viewers and DFTBA Records.
I think selling out is promoting a product you don't use, while compromising the entertainment value of your show. Cool video.

Money should not consume everything...

I definitely agree. It definitely can't be entirely disregarded either though, y'know?
Kaytaaay 2 years ago
OH. I see what I did. I meant to say it SHOULDN'T consume everything. My bad. XDD
