  • My daughter and I just watched this movie. It impressed us both. It's more than just about the children not letting their ill mother know about the changes in the country. The movie has some real news footages of important historical events during those years. Real history is intertwined with the lives of this family, you see the impact of huge historical happenings on the daily life of average people. The relationship between mother and children is sweet and tender. Very touching movie.

  • anyone who likes to watch another "german" (and at least half turkish) movie:

i recommend "gegen die wand", its also here at youtube (search title and "part 1"). subtitles not always good but works ^^

plot has nothing to do with history, its about immigrants in nowadays germany and actually the most vital and dynamic movie from germany i've seen so far!

    my very favourite!!!

  • @deguowatao I second that. Gegen die Wand is a fantastic film.

  • Do you know any more movies about Eastern Block/Socialist countries during the 80's? I like them to be both dramatic and funny like this. :)

  • @Beolex Sonnenallee is a funny comedy about a divided Street in Berlin (the east half of it) and it's teenagers.

NVA - a comedy about the last days of the East German Army.

Both movies have a funny love story but also tragic moments of the difficulties in the GDR.

and as a drama: Das Leben der Anderen (The life of the Others) A movie about a Stasi (state security) an his observation of regime critics in the GDR. (won the Oscar)

  • Love this movie

  • It's a shame that the germans don't invest more in movies ....they are really good and they created some greate movies like Das Bot or Der Untergang.

  • @494949david The Baader Meinhof Complex? The Edukators? The Lives of Others? Run Lola Run?

I always thought the Germans had a great national cinema industry.

  • @053bss

Rosenstrasse, The White Rose, and White Ribbon as well!!

  • @494949david

just coz "Downfall" has been pariodied so many times, still best film from germany

  • @494949david could not agree more, the french and germans make some excellent films and certainly give hollywood and some of its rehashed tired formulaic movies a run.

  • Wow,

    Was such a great movie.

  • We're watching it in our German class on Monday. I can't wait!

  • The gigs in this film is mainly understandable in the countries they were at the inner side of the iron curtain, but I also recommend for everyone. Maybe the best German comedy i've seen yet!

  • This was a really enjoyable movie....funny and sad.....poignant, is the word ! The acting is great; the story is gentle and humourous. One of the best movies I've seen.

  • This movie is awesome...

  • I watched this movie a lot of times, it is one of my favorite movies. The part when he went to west germany to look for his dad is so sad....

  • I really wonder why they decided to use "Comptine D'un Autre Été, L'après-Midi" from "Amelie from Montmartre" in this movie aswell as the Amelie-movie.

Kind of disappointing, despite the song being wonderful.

  • I love this movie. GDR forever!

  • Best movie since long time great stuff. And i cry every time in this Movie.Great

  • The film examines the deep fear of political reprisal during the Soviet regimes, the painful dislocation of flight to the West, and reveals how secrets and lies have shaped both the government and this small family.

  • does anyone know who said that lsat part "do we really have to copy..." ? if you know then please reply, i would really like to know

  • @xyLoveyx

I believe it was DDR politician Walter Ulbricht in response to DDR youth adopting the Beatles' line "yeah, yeah, yeah" (from their song "She loves you"), and a general statement against rock music and the Western influence on DDR youth (ca. 1965).

  • thank you optimusprime211 ^^

  • who said that part at the end "must we copy.." ? if anyone knows please reply i would really like to know

  • Good for when you slept in class, lol.

  • hahahaha

  • @LOL2240 yea it is.

  • haha isn't this dude off of inglourious basterds?

  • yes it is!

  • @LOL2240 yeah! Daniel Bruhl

  • fucking love this movie:)

  • GO AND BUY THE DVD.

  • where can it get it?

  • @Hockeygirl4

    amazon,

or failing that, try world cinema section in HMV. they usually only have one copy in though.

  • @lauragabbay ok thanks!

  • @Hockeygirl4

Don't waste your time with HMV. They're overpriced. Use Amazon.

  • @053bss why did you write ""Do we have to copy every crappy thing from the West?"

  • @doitanywayz Obviously, you haven't watched this all the way to the end.

  • @053bss Where can you get the dvd? Do they sell it at best buy or something?

  • I rented this movie from Blockbuster a few years ago.

It was in the foreign movie section. I sure you can get it from Best Buy.

  • @053bss ah what i meant was why was this said and whats it got to do with goodbye Lenin?

  • @doitanywayz because this was a famous quote from an East German politician if I remember correctly. And it has everything to do with the story behind Goodbye Lenin. If you watch the movie, or if you know about the "wiedervereinigung" or "re-unification", you'll know a lot of people were very cynical and skeptical about it, and they felt that Western German culture was basically erasing Eastern German culture, which really did have its own value and uniqueness and appreciation.

  • @053bss lol seriously

  • @053bss yeah if you're gonna pirate films, make sure they're from hollywood!

  • I love this movie so much.

  • haha the end is funny with the coca cola sign...

"i dont know what the comrades wer thinking" lol

  • There is now even nostalgia for the East! There is a hotel in Berlin which is decorated to look like it's still in East Berlin

  • This actually looks good....

  • It is.

  • maybe that's because you are an idiot and have no idea about history :)

  • You should watch it. Now.

Like putting a wall through Berlin wasnt absurd ?

  • Its a great movie thrashah. really.

  • Dude, you do realize that his mom is an ardent socialist right? That's why it would shock her.

  • ich liebe daniel brühl!

  • i <3 this movie!

  • 1:33 onwards is great

  • I watched this film yesterday and loved it. Best film I've seen in AGES! :-D

  • Brilliant movie. Funny and heartfelt.

  • I am convinced the boy didn't understand his mother. She was lying & creating an illusion just like he was. She was too afraid to go West w/ her husband so she became a hyper-communist to protect her children from suspicion as unreliable. She still loved her husband & regretted no going w/ him. This is what is revealed in the dacha scene.

  • The country had created the illusion, not the mother. She just believed in it and was convinced that her former husband was wrong. Later she realized what she had lost, and that all the country seemed to be all about, was nothing but an illusion.

  • Why are you ruining the film for people who haven't seen it? HELLO.

  • this was a hilarious film.

what a shock it would be if she learned the true history...

  • I don't want to spoiler it to anyone, but you should review the film carefully if you still think that after watching it.

  • we watched that in my german class and it is brilliant :D

  • lucky! ;D

  • such a brilliant film!

  • i just got the DVD

    it looks great

  • The movie is awesome. (:

  • Ahh...Yann Tiersen más encima en la música...snif snif
