My daughter and I just watched this movie. It impressed us both. It's more than just about the children not letting their ill mother know about the changes in the country. The movie has some real news footages of important historical events during those years. Real history is intertwined with the lives of this family, you see the impact of huge historical happenings on the daily life of average people. The relationship between mother and children is sweet and tender. Very touching movie.
@diekidiek I will check it out, may I suggest the movie "Katalin Varga", Romanian movie, just watched it, very dark but excellent!! Also "Das Leben Der Anderen", beautiful movie but you've probably seen it!
anyone who likes to watch another "german" (and at least half turkish) movie:
i recommend "gegen die wand", its also here at youtube (search title and "part 1"). subtitles not always good but works ^^
plot has nothing to do with history, its about immigrants in nowadays germany and actually the most vital and dynamic movie from germany i've seen so far!
@Beolex Sonnenallee is a funny comedy about a divided Street in Berlin (the east half of it) and it's teenagers.
NVA - a comedy about the last days of the East German Army.
Both movies have a funny love story but also tragic moments of the difficulties in the GDR.
and as a drama: Das Leben der Anderen (The life of the Others) A movie about a Stasi (state security) an his observation of regime critics in the GDR. (won the Oscar)
@494949david could not agree more, the french and germans make some excellent films and certainly give hollywood and some of its rehashed tired formulaic movies a run.
The gigs in this film is mainly understandable in the countries they were at the inner side of the iron curtain, but I also recommend for everyone. Maybe the best German comedy i've seen yet!
This was a really enjoyable movie....funny and sad.....poignant, is the word ! The acting is great; the story is gentle and humourous. One of the best movies I've seen.
I really wonder why they decided to use "Comptine D'un Autre Été, L'après-Midi" from "Amelie from Montmartre" in this movie aswell as the Amelie-movie.
Kind of disappointing, despite the song being wonderful.
The film examines the deep fear of political reprisal during the Soviet regimes, the painful dislocation of flight to the West, and reveals how secrets and lies have shaped both the government and this small family.
I believe it was DDR politician Walter Ulbricht in response to DDR youth adopting the Beatles' line "yeah, yeah, yeah" (from their song "She loves you"), and a general statement against rock music and the Western influence on DDR youth (ca. 1965).
@doitanywayz because this was a famous quote from an East German politician if I remember correctly. And it has everything to do with the story behind Goodbye Lenin. If you watch the movie, or if you know about the "wiedervereinigung" or "re-unification", you'll know a lot of people were very cynical and skeptical about it, and they felt that Western German culture was basically erasing Eastern German culture, which really did have its own value and uniqueness and appreciation.
Hell people ! How are you doing ? Finally , I have rented this wonderful movie called Good Bye Lenin from last week ! It's a great and wonderful movie ! Thanks , folks !

to the both of you, the wall was absurd, yes, and I think you're right about me not knowing too much about german history. but just seeing this commercial, and seeing that this kid needs to keep such a great event from hurting his mom is absurd. best german movie ive seen is RUN LOLA RUN. this one looks lame
I am convinced the boy didn't understand his mother. She was lying & creating an illusion just like he was. She was too afraid to go West w/ her husband so she became a hyper-communist to protect her children from suspicion as unreliable. She still loved her husband & regretted no going w/ him. This is what is revealed in the dacha scene.
The country had created the illusion, not the mother. She just believed in it and was convinced that her former husband was wrong. Later she realized what she had lost, and that all the country seemed to be all about, was nothing but an illusion.
