Cool guys. One question, why keep the fans running? Surely that will labour the motors and they aren't needed if the oil is nicely circulated to keep it cool
awsome build ya good idea putting some kind of cooling system. but ya it probably would be a good idea to ditch the fans they are only wasting power from you power supply at this point. Probably be a better Idea to use led lights instead. but all in all wicked looking case that's probably the best case I have seen for a diy submerged comp.
If You were conducting an "experiment" by building a mineral oil rig, would YOU put $3000 worth of parts in it?
Shit, I don't blame them one bit.
Awesome job they did with the vid and build. Good luck reproducing this, unless You can find somebody skilled who can fabricate such a case from scratch.
The numbers are amazing . . . 22c wow, You could overclock a $300 i7 920 to 6GHZ with this cooling system probably ; )
Regular mineral oil will go sour. I definitely wouldn't recommend using mineral oil from Wal Mart or from a vet clinic. What you want is transformer oil, which contains chemicals to keep it from going bad (it's expected to last for decades). It's a little more expensive (~$10/gal), but worth it if you don't want a stinking mess on your hands. Look up oil dealers in your area.
Thats a nie setup you got there, I'm planning on building a oil-cooledpc so i can saely overclock my cpu but where would I find a good oil pump/radiator?
I found it in the pharmacy section. It was on the bottom shelf, wouldn't have even seen it if one of my friends didn't notice it. Funny enough, I asked a clerk the same question and they had no idea either.
If you want to purchase in large bulk quantities for a project like a mineral oil PC, a good place to go is a veterinary clinic because it, in it's purest form, is used as a horse laxative. You are able to purchase large containers instead of a bunch of small ones hopefully keeping costs down. If you have an expensive system I am not sure I would trust stuff I get at Walmart as stuff I bought there always breaks. If you do get it there I would guess near the pharmacy.
I have been thinking of making one of these and attaching an air conditioner condenser to use it as a radiator for the oil, just don's know where to find a pump that will pump oil at a good speed and wont make too much noise.
My average room temperature is about 20, 25 degrees Celsius. For the oil itself, this is based off the motherboard temperature reading on asus probe, is about 20 degrees during load and about 12 when idle. These temperatures are because of a inline radiator that is not in this video that was added about a month after this video. I would suggest the chiller, if not, you'll probably see temperatures of 60 plus, though oil is great for cooling, once it gets hot, it tends to stay hot longer.
I really like the way that you mounted the hardrives and optical drives in there. You may not realize how much capillary action mineral oil has, mounting the drives above the oil should prevent the issue my case is having.
btw, you may be interested to see the video of my case...may give you an idea for how to cool your oil ;).
I know what you mean, if I get a year with the oil in it, I am happy with that. Just something cool to try out. I have cut a lot out of the video, it was meant to showcase the case that we built more so then the cooling aspect of it, I am noob at editing so I was just messing around with premier when making it, I'll have a better version out soon.
@kilomango NO , you actually need , a radiator , so , when the oil gets hot , it cools down , otherwise , as the oil warms up , it tends to stay hot , it will actually be way hotter than with air.... so ,get yourself a good radiator , and THEN you're good to go .
I'm building one of these for my living room, and as soon as it's ready , i'm gonna put it inside(ok, behind) a fishtank ...gonna look really nice ^.~
It's True, it does get worse over time. I have been able to push it to 56 degrees while running COD4 for a few hours, 27 degrees is the idle temperature. I have put a pump into the case now that can pump the oil out. I am now looking for something to run the oil through to cool it which will keep the oil actively cool. Oil Cooling really isn't that effective unless you actively cool teh oil.

Same goes for heatsinks

I wonder if the oil reaches heatpipes for ultimate cooling, another thing that would be nice to Put a Gtx 480 Or 5970 in the oil.
Just a bit too much for me.
Awsome video

So cool (literaly) :D
But wouldn't it be a good idea to remove the fans as the motors driving them produce heat?

is it still running after 2 years? or did it break down or did you scrap it?

i'm assuming that the oils used do not act as solvents for some of the plastic and rubber parts?

thats pretty sweet, but why put a poop comp in it? putting in that much effort you should have used ballin parts.

At $10 per gallon, it is a lot cheaper than any mineral oil I've seen lately. Please tell me where I can get transformer oil for $10.

Question, where exactly in Walmart did you find the mineral oil? I asked one of the clerks and they had no idea what I was talking about.

What is the room temp, and the oil temp on average....I am looking at doing this but adding an aquarium chiller ($350!!!)
Let me know!?

So how long does this thing last until it breaks?

It's still running, I added a radiator to it to cool the oil where it gets hot after a while.

Hi. Where this radiator is inserted?

Good idea, but as we all know how mineral oil act's after time, this is not long term type to cool component's.
Video itself is not so good. Guys show more how fill tank and less temperature's etc. This video need hard clipping.
