It's funny how talking heads keep asking politicians why the needs of common folk account for such a relatively small percentage of these bailouts, as though they can't see the elephant in the room: THIS IS HOW CAPITALISM WORKS. The whole point of it is to redistribute wealth from the poor to the rich. The proles are the last to enjoy the benefits as they "trickle down," and when crises strike they are the first to be cut loose and the last to be picked back up. Profits over people.

Not all is due to bad loans. A lot is due to denials for disability by SSA. We need money for Housing Choice Vouchers, money for the National Housing Trust Fund, money to the shelters and non-profits who aid the homeless. Yeah. I'm really shaky about the stimulus (although not as much as I was about the bailout). As for single-payer healthcare, I would support it if it works, but it's really easy to mess it up. I'm hardly an expert, but I've heard that France's public healthcare is very good, but England's is barely tolerable. Whether a public system in the U.S. would work depends very much on how it's set up.

even England's healthcare system is better then then healthcare in this country. I work in US healthcare, I've seen the horrors of a system that does not work. Millions of Americans can't afford the basic things they need to be healthy. People wait hours in ER's overflowing with the uninsured because they have nowhere else to go. You see, the ER by law can't refuse care to a person without insurance so the ER in essence becomes a primary care place, something it was not designed to do.

witzkeyman: it's not that the houses (in general) are worthless, it's that the homeowners were either talked into taking more loan than they could afford or they were fooled into taking loans that were affordable to begin with but which contained interest rate time bombs that made the payments outrageous.

The economy does not need "kickstarting", it needs fundamental repair.

We are not in a "credit crisis", we are in a debt crisis. Bailout money only deepens the problems with more debt.
