@odannon A matter of opinion. I personally regard it as, without irony or hyperbole, my favorite guitar solo of all time. At a certain point, he stops using his guitar as a musical instrument and starts using it as a means of channeling emotion. There's no fret workouts of blazing fast arpeggios, just raw emotion.
Kozelek took an example of just how awful Wings could be and turned it into something truly majestic. He's a phenomenal artist who is criminally unheard of by the masses... a brilliant songwriter in his own right but my word hasn't he also served up some incredible covers?
@79crab I felt that too when I first heard this song ! The guitar palying is similar to *Cortez The Killer* :) I love the Red House Painters and I was happy they covered this song, cause I love that Macca song soo much :)
One of the best covers I ever heard. Usually you hear covers that try to sound like the original only with the covering singer's voice. Seldom you run into a cover that is actually a personal interpretation of the original song. But in those cases it sometimes seems to me like the covering artist worked very hard to give that interpretation. Here I don't feel it- it feels just right. It sounds like a Red house painters' song.
k. pauls version is SOOOO MUCH BETTER. and the notes near the start are so GOD DAMN ANNOYING!!!!! and 11 mins long. cmon! thats stupid and the guitar sucks!
Great guitar-playing, very evocative and even emotional. I like the bluesy take. My biggest problem is that it took almost FIVE MINUTES before anything resembling Silly Love Songs was heard. When the singing started, the lyrics seemed to be an afterthought, just laying there, without any tie to the music. I'm not expecting you to pull Linda McCartney out for backing lyrics, but I was expecting Silly Love Songs, a shred of melody, a chord progression, SOMETHING. Great music, horrible cover.
Thanks so much for posting. This is likely my all time favourite cover. It's amazing how Kozelak took a vapid pop throwaway and made it so visceral and REAL and in doing, may have out Crazy Horsed Crazy Horse. Thanks again!
almost twice as good as Wings

[00:00 to 4:47 min, "Cortez the Killer" (by N. Young) ]+ [4:47 to 11:06 is cover"Silly Love Songs" (macca) ] = This Version
Well is NOt BAD, It's GOOd an very NICE-SAD VERSIÓN
but the "Intro" (cortez the killer part) is really INNECESSARY ...This Part of the introduction (00:00 to 4:47 min) is a Fuckin' paine in the ass

The comparison to Young's "Cortez the Killer" is spot on.
Two things:
I can still remember exactly where I was, the time of year and day when I first heard this.
I can only listen to this album alone.

Without a doubt, the most depressing Wings cover ever. Incomparable, if you are in the right mood.

This is close to genius. Kozelek has an uncanny ability to deconstruct a song and make it his own.

It sounds exactly like "Cortez The Killer". It's "Silly Love Songs" done in the style of mid-70s Neil Young--a brilliant idea.

me too, its weird, has almost exactly the same cadence and nuances

Same key, same tempo, similar tones...maybe he's using a Les Paul.
Still, something about "this version always reminds me of shut the fuck up" made me pee a little from laughing.
