Besides the obvious " lesson " of how to not speak publically , you know ..... the other important thing to take from this video is the importance of practice . I think a lot of young cats think people are just born with this shit . That they just wake up one morning being able to burn on the drums . It seems obvious but people who can really play the drums have put in thousands of hours on their own . Working the shit out . Making sure its right . It is not easy but it must be done .
@pgdrums12 He's speaking in terms of how many strokes. It isn't a seven stroke roll but it is seven hits. Technically its a sextuplet with a down beat but lets just let this guy think what he wants to think
He gives great SOLID displays backed by REAL TECHNICAL REFERENCES AND TERMINOLOGY!!!!! Nothing worse than a musician who has ALL of this ridiculous technology at his fingertips and not learn more than enough to broadening his or her palette. Flams, Three Stroke, Double Stroke, Single Stroke... These are REAL Terms not TRIPLE BACK BEAT.
he means single stroke 7. it's easy to mix it up. heaps of people call flam accents (triplets with flams on the one) flam taps. when a single stroke five or single stroke seven recur, they just turn into the note value that recurs in this case it's triplet sixteenths. for single stroke 5's it becomes sixteenths etc
@TheDice2008 Its a style of playign drums that was "perfected" in the black church. For the most part is not necessarily technical playing or based on rudiments, its based on sticking patterns and grooving. Many gospel drummers are not formerly taught so this style of drumming can easily be passed on.
I am pretty sure what he is calling a "7 Stroke Roll" is actually a tripletized or "slurred" 6 stroke roll (RLLRRLR)...a 7 stroke is RRLLRRL (or LLRRLLR)....
Randy, I just wanted to say that may the Lord richly bless you. Not many drummers have an open mind to share some of their material. Im a BETTER DRUMMER cuz of ur videos. Thank you again and God Bless
My boyee Raaandyyyy!! Maaaan, GOD has TRULY blessed you bro! Stay encouraged! You knoiw I'm your "prayer warrior" so nevah GIVE UP. You a TRULY great drummer, teacher, friend. Love ya' MUCH man, and will see ya' soon!! Thanks for letting me hang out with THE BEST. - BBK

well, it is you. you cant say youre not knocking it then call it crap. i have immense regard for drum line snare drummers and pipe band drummers, but that skill set has no place in my life musically. i see the gospel chops movement as more like a musical sport, or a martial art. so fresh and unique. anything that takes years of practice and skill development, whether its your cup of tea or not, is not "crap". you sound like my grandpa griping about "music these days". jus sayin.
@liennto crap in the sense meaning it's everywhere. Like people are so emensed by it whcih I will agree, takes LOADS of skill and practice. I worded my statement wrong. I think it's great and sounds amazing don't get me wrong, like you said it's not my cup. That's all.
i gotcha. i admit being a bit obsessed with it... my teacher tells me to try and take just the best parts of it and add them to my own style, and what works for the playing situations i'm in. peace

in 3 minutes, he said you know exactly 30 times. Ten times in one minute! Damn this guy needs to improve his vocabulary. Good drumming though. Nice chops
Randy, or anyone else here, there are a couple problems i have and maybe you can help! I do have the rudiments down but i cant seem to gain speed. How is speed developed? When do you know youre ready to speed up? Is it just constant practice? I can only seem to get as fast as 16th's. Struggilng to get to 32nds. Whats a good amount of practice time and how do you know when to make time for grooves/rudiments/licks? the other thing is how do you figure out where to bring in licks on a song?
Basically, speed is developed through repetition. You know you are ready for a faster speed when you can play the rudiment EVENLY and CONFIDENTLY, and only repetition will help you get there. What rudiments are you trying to do 32nds with? Going from 16ths to 32nds is an exponential change and could be pretty tough, depending on the bpm. I don't really understand the question about grooves/rudiments/licks, but knowing where to bring licks in on a song is something that you learn to feel.
Ok thanks for the infomation! Preciate it! Guess ill have to keep working on it and be patient. Well what I meant by grooves/rudiments/licks is how much time should be devoted to practicing each? Like should prctice time be evenly distributed among all or should ruiments be worked on more than licks, etc............
Well, a well rounded practice schedule always has its benefits, but it also comes down to what you want to devote your own time to. Like, if you get an idea for a really sweet groove, there's nothing wrong with practicing that one groove for 2 hours and getting it down. But also remember that a TON of licks (and grooves) can be derived from rudiments, so practicing those are really good too. So it's really up to you what and how you want to practice.
its basically a paradiddle (rlrrll(r)) just backwards, he plays rllrrl(r)
i put the (r) cuz thats the downbeat which is important, an no theres no correction you are 100% correct.
gospel drumming is based on rudiments so much, before i started learning about it i wouldve never guessed all that crazy stuff is based off of triplets, and basic rudiments lol
oh im designated but sumtimes i do wat hella good gospel drummers do and then their all like "Your over powering the choir". wen im not, cuz the drummer who playz insted of me, is super boring itz as if his playin would put u 2 sleep.
