  • i've got the fills down but i just cant find a good drum beat...please help

  • more play less talking

  • wos up wid da u kno , u kno, u kno wot im sayin u kno, yeh u kno wot i mean u kno, rudiments u kno

  • he said you know 18 times within the first 2 mins

  • Besides the obvious " lesson " of how to not speak publically , you know ..... the other important thing to take from this video is the importance of practice . I think a lot of young cats think people are just born with this shit . That they just wake up one morning being able to burn on the drums . It seems obvious but people who can really play the drums have put in thousands of hours on their own . Working the shit out . Making sure its right . It is not easy but it must be done .

  • Those doubles are crazy good

  • I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW AND I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW THAT I KNOW,DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?

  • you know, i know, he knows, she knows, and even the little boy down the street knows........ wait a min, what are we meant to know????

  • I know it's been asked like on every video but who was the dude :18

  • Nice clean chops. Very inspiring!

  • nice

  • You Know!

    LOL

    Nice vid. btw.

  • i was focusing more on how many time he said you know instead of the lesson lol

  • RLLRRL RLLRRL R is a 6 stroke not a 7. 7 is rrllrrl

  • @pgdrums12 He's speaking in terms of how many strokes. It isn't a seven stroke roll but it is seven hits. Technically its a sextuplet with a down beat but lets just let this guy think what he wants to think

  • Love to see Randy REPRESENTING the Gallerins! Pleasant Hill & CPHS!

  • this guy is good.......you know???

  • He gives great SOLID displays backed by REAL TECHNICAL REFERENCES AND TERMINOLOGY!!!!! Nothing worse than a musician who has ALL of this ridiculous technology at his fingertips and not learn more than enough to broadening his or her palette. Flams, Three Stroke, Double Stroke, Single Stroke... These are REAL Terms not TRIPLE BACK BEAT.

  • he means single stroke 7. it's easy to mix it up. heaps of people call flam accents (triplets with flams on the one) flam taps. when a single stroke five or single stroke seven recur, they just turn into the note value that recurs in this case it's triplet sixteenths. for single stroke 5's it becomes sixteenths etc

  • is That 7 sroke really a 6 stroke...RLLRRL..

  • Why do they call this Gospel drumming?

  • @TheDice2008 Its a style of playign drums that was "perfected" in the black church. For the most part is not necessarily technical playing or based on rudiments, its based on sticking patterns and grooving. Many gospel drummers are not formerly taught so this style of drumming can easily be passed on.

  • Yeah. I know.

  • great video

  • I am pretty sure what he is calling a "7 Stroke Roll" is actually a tripletized or "slurred" 6 stroke roll (RLLRRLR)...a 7 stroke is RRLLRRL (or LLRRLLR)....

  • Thank you Randy, Great job!!

  • Randy, I just wanted to say that may the Lord richly bless you. Not many drummers have an open mind to share some of their material. Im a BETTER DRUMMER cuz of ur videos. Thank you again and God Bless

  • My boyee Raaandyyyy!! Maaaan, GOD has TRULY blessed you bro! Stay encouraged! You knoiw I'm your "prayer warrior" so nevah GIVE UP. You a TRULY great drummer, teacher, friend. Love ya' MUCH man, and will see ya' soon!! Thanks for letting me hang out with THE BEST. - BBK

  • bro how long have you been druming??? u realy sound awesome... how i wish i could play like you..

  • YEAH!!! I love gallerin. what a beast

  • ÉS GRANDE!!!!!

  • good teacher

  • Dude this was thoroughly informative and refreshing. Very smooth and honest playing making it so doggone easy to comprehend. Thanks Yo. Very well presented

  • Damn this was such a good lesson. I learned a lot from this, honestly.

    Jim.

  • I'm not knocking on gospel drummers, they have AMAZING! skill. I'm just not into this like trendy, gospel drummer, show-offy crap. Maybe that's me

  • well, it is you. you cant say youre not knocking it then call it crap. i have immense regard for drum line snare drummers and pipe band drummers, but that skill set has no place in my life musically. i see the gospel chops movement as more like a musical sport, or a martial art. so fresh and unique. anything that takes years of practice and skill development, whether its your cup of tea or not, is not "crap". you sound like my grandpa griping about "music these days". jus sayin.

  • @liennto crap in the sense meaning it's everywhere. Like people are so emensed by it whcih I will agree, takes LOADS of skill and practice. I worded my statement wrong. I think it's great and sounds amazing don't get me wrong, like you said it's not my cup. That's all.

  • i gotcha. i admit being a bit obsessed with it... my teacher tells me to try and take just the best parts of it and add them to my own style, and what works for the playing situations i'm in. peace

  • can someone tell me what is that kit ??? it sounds so well !

  • i cant do doubles with out bouncing after

    i start going fast

  • @freekpill2009 - u a ignorant ass drummer cuz it took me 2- 3 months to master playin doubles

  • who said i havnt mastered them yet your the dumbass you aint even heard me play yet

  • @Irideson dont fuckin call me ignorant lol

  • He's tight!! But what I also like is how smooth he is!!!

  • dude ur good... i like the techniques i learned alot

  • AMAZING IT TAUGHT ME ALOT

  • so much feel

  • WOW!

  • IM taking all of this to GC drum off

  • thats straight but a seven stroke is RRLLRRL

  • in gospel sevens are backward paradiddlediddles rlrrllr

  • Thank you for not being stingy and staying humble with the gift and being very detailed and professional.Think you are a good teacher and may god b with bless you

  • i like the way he uses triplet diddles in his straght ahead grooves that adds a lot

  • yeah, i know

  • good pointers man, i might use some of these ideas in the private lessons i teach. i like your explanation of the double stroke roll

  • NOW, that being said... holy crap he's good.

  • man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man man

  • this dude talk wayyyy too much...must be stoned!!

  • thats probably the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

  • in 3 minutes, he said you know exactly 30 times. Ten times in one minute! Damn this guy needs to improve his vocabulary. Good drumming though. Nice chops

  • and "man" is also to much used :P

  • cocaine.

  • Please release a dvd doon Randy. You are really awesome and positive.

  • is sounding good really that easy? man I gotta start applying rudiments to my playing

  • He said ''you know'' about 110 times..

  • lol hahaha yeah 4 reall yuh kno

  • we know!!! WE KNOW 4 THE LOVE OF GOOOOOOOOOD!!!

  • @014harbo Ha ha so true.

  • @014harbo He said "you know" 61 times to be exact (including part 2)....

  • Dude thanks for your honest to goodness info.Well done

  • thanks for the lesson

  • Randy has a tasty style

  • this video was added on my birthday

  • Awesome lesson, best double strokes i've ever seen!! Cheers :)

  • Randy, thanks a million for taking the time, nice lessons, really helped me, gracias desde España

  • Randy, or anyone else here, there are a couple problems i have and maybe you can help! I do have the rudiments down but i cant seem to gain speed. How is speed developed? When do you know youre ready to speed up? Is it just constant practice? I can only seem to get as fast as 16th's. Struggilng to get to 32nds. Whats a good amount of practice time and how do you know when to make time for grooves/rudiments/licks? the other thing is how do you figure out where to bring in licks on a song?

  • Basically, speed is developed through repetition. You know you are ready for a faster speed when you can play the rudiment EVENLY and CONFIDENTLY, and only repetition will help you get there. What rudiments are you trying to do 32nds with? Going from 16ths to 32nds is an exponential change and could be pretty tough, depending on the bpm. I don't really understand the question about grooves/rudiments/licks, but knowing where to bring licks in on a song is something that you learn to feel.

  • Ok thanks for the infomation! Preciate it! Guess ill have to keep working on it and be patient. Well what I meant by grooves/rudiments/licks is how much time should be devoted to practicing each? Like should prctice time be evenly distributed among all or should ruiments be worked on more than licks, etc............

  • Well, a well rounded practice schedule always has its benefits, but it also comes down to what you want to devote your own time to. Like, if you get an idea for a really sweet groove, there's nothing wrong with practicing that one groove for 2 hours and getting it down. But also remember that a TON of licks (and grooves) can be derived from rudiments, so practicing those are really good too. So it's really up to you what and how you want to practice.

  • Ok I got ya! Thanks so much for the advice!

  • No problem at all

  • Correct me if im wrong, but when he's talking about 7's, aren't those technically sextuplets (6's) but with the downbeat tacked on at the end?

  • its basically a paradiddle (rlrrll(r)) just backwards, he plays rllrrl(r)

i put the (r) cuz thats the downbeat which is important, an no theres no correction you are 100% correct.

gospel drumming is based on rudiments so much, before i started learning about it i wouldve never guessed all that crazy stuff is based off of triplets, and basic rudiments lol

  • No, I dont know.

  • You know lol

  • How come you aren't famous?

  • Amazing! Thanks

  • is there a vid of da guy dat is playing at 0:18??

  • yup, look up Boyd Sisters it's called "The Boyd Sisters on Gospel Chops" just youtube it.

  • ... at the end of the opening scenes that is...

  • very helpful thnx so much, godbless

  • thanks a lot man whens your dvd out??

  • It's not called a "7 stroke"...it's called a 6 stroke roll..

    Know before you blow...

  • it actually is a seven. he might've threw in one or 2 sixes but they were sevens.

  • dude i have been trying to crack the beat you just showed me man...thanks sooo much for this video..

    be blessed man

  • great now i get to use this at church. if theyll let me play.

  • lol, they do that to you too. I've seen many who can't play cause thry not designated to be playin in church.

  • oh im designated but sumtimes i do wat hella good gospel drummers do and then their all like "Your over powering the choir". wen im not, cuz the drummer who playz insted of me, is super boring itz as if his playin would put u 2 sleep.

  • i know what u saying cuzz it happened to me but u have to know that u are accompanying the choir instead of vice versa. its cool to do chops but u have to play the music and do licks that fit what the choir is singing. i always thought that the drumming in church was boring and i was getting mad when the director told me not to lay so may rolls and i was mad but then i thought about it so u juss have to know what fits and where.

  • hey man, i've been waiting for six years & 2 add insult 2 injury they've got me playing bass and i'm better than the drummer(& evidently the bass player too). they've just asked me 2 play drums and everyone's like "you rip on drums!!!". my reply was "thanx but thats what i've been trying 2 tell you". point is, be patient, your time will come. just ask God what he's trying 2 teach you. look @ the drummer @ your church and figure out what you'd do or not do 2 better suit God's music. its about God.

  • I'm the drummer at my church, but it's a rich white church, so we play Contemporary Christian, not gospel ever (blah). God has recently opened my eyes to what he deems proper to praise him. GOSPEL. Or at least our style with a lot more talent involved. Oh how I wish I could drum for a black gospel church. Those musicians have a connection with God and know how to play music and praise God the way he intended us to.

  • i feel you man im black and im the drummer at my church and we just started playing contemporary because we are no longer a all black church, but we jazz in up! so just play the music with all gospel beats and licks! it will fit i promise just listen to gospel artist tye tribbite he mixed the 2 styles on his new album stand out

  • That's awesome to hear. I'm white, but I do what I can, I just need to work on my chops a lot. But race doesn't matter, I'm just doing my best to improve our music. Thanks for the encouragement.

  • anytime! God bless you!!!!
