Which war are you talking about? USSR was on German side in Winter War. Germans stopped airplanes that Finns bought from Italy coming to Finland in Winter War. The Continuation War is different war. Germans supported Finns in Continuation War.

The Germans and Russians were actually alliies until the 1942. The invasion was dumb and smart. in the ways it was dumb. 1. The Russians had an OVERWHELMING advantage in man-power. 2. The British were not out of the pic forcing hitler to fight a two front war and 3. it was not properly planned to weather conditions. Now in the ways it was smart 1. if it suceeded Germany would have more oil and gasoline.

This meant Hitler could invade any country in Europe without risking an attack from the Soviet Union. Stalin also hoped the French and British would weaken Germany enough. Had the Soviet Union attacked in 1940 Hitler himself admitted to the finnish marshall Mannerheim in 1942, that Germany would be in trouble.
Most Soviet intelligence knew Hitler would attack soon.

The Germans and Russians were never allies in WW2. Both systems saw each other as mortal enemies and they had already fought each other in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's. Hitler had supported the fascists led by Franco, and Stalin had supported the communists, who lost the Spanish Civil war.
The Soviet Union also produces the highest number of tanks, submachine guns, attack aircraft (IL-2) and heavy guns than any other nation in WW2. Hitler himself admitted to Mannerheim he was amazed.

So the war was not over yet. Then them aforementioned horrific nukes were dropped on them two cities and set the scene for Japan to quit their ideas of resisting further.

Everybody get your history straight. Finland _never_ joined the siege of Leningrad because Mannerheim didn't want us to. We propably could have at one time closed the gap but with great losses. Mannerheim didn't want Finnish army to be involved in such a fight. Reasons were both political and personal. And I think all this warhype without real facts is stupid and infantile. I like Russians and I love to booze with them. I have a Russian girl friend too. She's hot. ;)

FInland never sieged leningrad! And.. My american friend. Russia could had wiped us out easily if they had used their brains... they tried massing us over. Instead we killed em all in the woods.. For example Suomussalmi.. 11k of us vs 45 of them + their numerous tanks and artillery pieces.. We lost only 800 men.. They lost 26 thousand! And we got a hell of a lot of equipment..

Actually the standard of living in the Baltics before WW2 was lower as compared to the rest of Europe. And politicaly, the Soviets achieved a total victory over Finland even installing a puppet government there while taking only areas useful to them. Do you seriously think that after annihilating Germany in 1945, Finland could've resisted the USSR? No. No one familiar with history would think so. Finland is lucky that the USSR did not want all of it.
