  • this is some weird shit

  • Comment removed

  • 動き過ぎなんだよ!ネタが豊富すぎるんだよ!

    興奮して仕方ねぇよ!!

  • gainax first steps

  • man i miss the 80's

  • 凄まじい作画枚数

    本当に好きじゃないとこんなモノは作れないね・・・先人は偉大だよ。

  • So basically this is an anime about EVERYTHING EVER?

  • yeaaah....the wtf lvl at this is equal to anything you see from Gainax today.

  • I wonder what the modern equivalent of this would be....

  • @Necromas FLCL maybe?

  • Gosh, this thing is odd.

  • At 3:01 does anyone besides me see Char's Zaku?

  • @Meganinja15 Most of the Zeon suits from 0079 are there.

  • lol this is so shit, you're all weeaboo faggots,

  • @thewaterboy1

You like Inna. Your opinion is invalid.

  • @Ganalef i admire your research into my profile, normally people just flame against the comment i made,

  • Twiiiilliiiight

  • @smeggdog found youuu

  • @ZeaLitY sup Zeality

  • wow, epic!!

  • :( I miss this stuff so much

  • Man, that city explosion scene gives me goosebumps every time. The music is perfect for this

  • @killakadoog im sorry, but how is this music perfect for this? this is sooooooo shit, get a grip

  • @thewaterboy1 Wow, now that I think about it, you're absolutely right! Those Gainax guys don't know crap about anime! I wish that they had just ended their careers with this piece of crap... The world would've been a much better place.

  • Ahh theres the intro borrowed from ELO's Time album.

  • LOL Star Wars...O hai Optimus!

  • Master piece of pre-GAINAX,=)

    Superdimensional Fortress Macross, Marvel...great job!!

  • Holy shit, look at the production value on this. Most anime nowadays use long shots or tons of shots where there's no movement so all they have to animate are the mouths, but look at how much is going on!

This is seriously better than most anime nowadays is. I don't care how random everything is, if the people who made this made this made an actual movie out of it I would have watched it.

  • Thank you, Wikipedia. Now've you've made me get an unstoppable urge to watch Gainax shows.

  • yeah I know what you mean, I get really bored watching that slow panning shot of someone talking, and their mouth just opening and closing.

  • I've always found it funny that there's a ton of people who love stuff like Naruto... and aside from the rare fight scenes that's pretty much all that happens. Fuck, even when they're in the middle of a fight they stop just to have long conversations or monologues, it's just stupid!

  • anyone watch flcl? haruko says daicon 5 when she turns up in the bunny outift (from this vid 2:53) in the second to last episode, brittle bullets.

    Yeah.

    Go wikipedia

  • its a Daikon radish...hence daicon, its a play on words...

  • GET OUT

  • Hey, have you seen any anime ever made after 1983? Or, maybe anything from Gainax? If not for this video, you wouldn't have ever. (But if you're not an anime fan, why are you looking up videos like this?!)

  • Ive seen every little anime show you people tell me to look up. Its just a bunch of keyframes...

  • SUPER MARIO BROS. 2

  • another good reason,, the 80's were the best!!

  • This was all hand animated by fans. Fans who went on later to form their own animation studio. An animation studio named GAINAX. Some of you may have heard of it.

  • 5:16. Spotted Doraemon, and then Lum flies through the scene. Still rather hard to see her flight, but you have to love the pause feature.

  • Once and for all[?]:

Puns are as easy in Japanese as in English. A sound can mean various things in either language. The video makes a visual pun.

Many US supermarkets have DAI (big) + KON (root) = DAIKON (big-root radishes) nowadays.

The Ô in Ôsaka is another reading of the DAI character. So a CON (convention) held in Ôsaka is of course abbreviated DAICON.

The animation's radish theme was inevitable.

jalp (2 yrs teaching English in Japan, then 5-1/2 translating)

  • I also saw Cutey Honey,

  • Copyright shattering!

  • this is some crazy shit, man.

I see ultra seven batman, robin, superman, wonder woman, megazord, zaku, aliens, and DARTH VADER!?

  • AMMA TRIPPIN' BALLZ HERE.

  • trippy shit. my eyes hurt now. but it's worth it.

  • Proof that 80s anime is better than the modern....

  • @Phavonic By far

  • @Phavonic Year is irrelevant.

  • @ShuHibiki No, year IS relevant.

People's natural creativity should be what is irrelevant, but no one has yet gone against our poor modern zeitgeist. So....year is very relevant if it influences bad imitation art, karaoke and reality TV, over visionary thinking.

  • @Phavonic This stuff is made by beginner animation creators with some experienced key drawers. It is not made for the mass viewing on media but created for the opening and ending of Japanese SiFi Conventions. True OTAKU people made these films.

  • @82613880889 The otaku who later became known as GAINAX, no less. <3

  • @Phavonic Absolutely

  • This is so awesome. Why does it seem like the Japanese have a monopoly on awesome animation and animators. Everyone else is just so DAMN LAME.

  • Probably the most copyright infringing video ever made. God I love it.

  • Geez, I just could recall robots from the 5:15 cut.

At least I recognized Maria, from Metropolis, Gort, the Tin Man and, of course, Giant Robot

  • 5:15 hakaider!

    Iron maiden from metropolis

that bug thing from this Island earth...

man they were thourogh in including every body...

  • EPIC

  • Totally awesome, the best opening any Sci-Fi convention can ever hope for. A wonderfull celebration of Sci-Fi and Fantasy and the spirit of wonder that makes Sci-Fi and Fantasy great. This video can put tears in the eyes of any Sci-Fi and Fantasy nerd.I only wish Gainax could make something like this for the San Diego Comic Con or Gen Con.

  • ↓同感!ネ申の仕事だね

  • すげぇ・・・凄すぎる!!

  • I counted 1 Misty May.

  • GREAT!!

  • and ELO rocks

  • lol jk daicon is cool

  • i've never heard of daicon before....was it a popular anime?

  • It's actually a name for the Japanese Sci-Fi Convention. The term Daicon is given whenever the convention takes place in Osaka. There will be another one this year, named Daicon 8.

  • wow

  • I love Densha Otoko! Kinda funny... was sitting in the kitchen watching it and my mom remarked how the opening song sounded like ELO... I love mi madre.

  • It is ELO. :-) The song is called, "Twilight". You can find the video here on YouTube.

  • thanks to my mom, woulda never guessed. Consequently bought the Time album. Ultra shiny stuff. <3

  • Cool! Yeah, ELO is great! Have you heard of 10cc? You'd probably like them, too. I recommend getting their "Best of" CD. It's got some awesome songs on it, even one by Godley and Cream, two of the members of the band who did an album together.

  • Time is one of my fave albums.

  • for a darn good reason.

  • hey all, watch the Opening to the Jdrama Densha Otoko. It is a complete remake of this. Same song. Girl in bunny outfit. So many of the same things happening. Also, just watch the series. it's awesome lol.

  • I've recently finalized an audio remastering project for this video. It can now be found on Youtube, and in stereo. Video quality suffers somewhat due to Youtube's limitations.

  • Even almost 25 years ago Gainax was still awesome :p

  • WOW! That sure is cool to see. I don't think i'll listen to ELO's Time album and twilight the same way again after that.

  • さがした・・・やっと見つけた・・・

  • por densha otoko he llegado hasta aqui jeje

  • my nipples got hard watching this.

  • wonderful cel animation

  • So that sword is the Stormbringer?

  • haha, mary-sue much? just kidding.

  • i saw a pink haired character! :D 4:14 or somthing like dat.

  • Holy crap, I recognized ELO's Twilight right away! This is so great!!!!!!

  • no wrong Daicon was a show i've seen it and it wasnt just a series of Conventions it was a short series.

  • Nope, it was a shame given to the Japan SF Conventions that were held in Osaka a number of times.

  • has anyone ever found a high resolution version of this?

  • Oh my god, I just saw Tony Danza! Does anyone know that red hooded character at 4:02...he looks remarkably similar to "X the Eliminator".

  • spiderman?

  • Crest on Birdman's Helmet!

  • Anyone here seen "Densha Otoko"? Opening scene to that show pays homage to this, check it out it's here on You Tube. I love it.

  • Gives me goosebumps. Amazing talent!

  • I got some myself too, the animation is simply beautiful. ^_^)

  • For those of you wondering about the Raddish, Daicon (Dai=great and con being short for convention), Daicon is also a homonym for the japanese word for Raddish

  • I'm pretty sure that this is not a promotional video for Daicon IV. It *IS* Daicon IV. The intro is a summary of Daicon III.

As far as I can tell, FLCL is actually unofficially Daicon V seeing as how it's Gainax.

And Evangelion might unofficially be Daicon I or II (or VI). Gainax is crazy. Crazy awesome.

  • No. Daicon was a series of conventions in the early '80's.

The company that became Gainax did an animated opening video for Daicon III. People loved it and they did another for Daicon IV.

Ecangelion was mid to late '90's.

In FLCL, the sequence where Haruko is dressed as a bunny girl, flying on a guitar and screaming "Daicon V!" is an homage to this video, nothing more.

  • Like everyone else said, great stuff.

What's the song at the very beginning? Sounds like Kitaro or something.

  • It's great to see the original video that 電車男 pays homage to with it's opening animation. What a great video! Thanks for posting it.

  • This animation makes me happy. I can't stop watching it. I keep finding things that I didn't notice in previous views.

  • I wonder how it would be if there were something like this today? Video games, more anime, new Star Wars...the list goes on.

  • A raddish ship? oO The hell a bunny girl fighting Darth Vator with a Saber, tripping up a robot. I also see The Flash, Batman and Robbin,Spiderman, Super woman, Super Man, The large ship from Robotech! O.O OMG,my father would feak that Star Treck has been animinized XD I saw more people from Robotech in the waves and is it just me cause when them swords became alot I thought I saw a flash of the red sword used in Magic Knight Rayearth. o_O

  • But... Star Trek IS animated. They had a whole animated season after the original series. It featured the original cast and characters too. The stories were just as good to boot.

  • Rayearth was made many years after this.

  • We have come so far. And yet the old ones are always the best(usually). Why is that?

  • Animation has become commmercial more than it was back then, I guess (Quicker to produce)

Also nowadays illustrative animation gets pushed aside by 3D graphics :(

  • this is made of win and god

  • Wow! Great video. So it's true that they use that particular ELO song. Quite interesting.

  • You shall go to jail for showing such an awesome video where you can see that 2007 animation is no better than the early 80's. Just jk. (But be sure that for such a video they for sure had to work days and night at that time)

  • this animation is jesus

  • awsome video

  • This is the greatest thing known to man

  • does anyone know the name of the song playing through the second half of the video?

  • It's called "Twilight", by Electric Light Orchestra.

  • I've always wanted to see this, and now I have. Thanks!

  • So THAT'S what she says. I was wondering wtf she was saying.

  • ...wtf, ya that looks like a pretty weired show

  • This and the Daicon III animation was also done by a group of amateurs. These animations were noticably more fluid than much of the stuff made in the 80's, and perhaps even outdos at least half of what's being played currently.

It even had an effect on me when I first saw it (which was inspiration).

  • And for those of you who don't know, it was this group of animators that would go on to form GAINAX

Yah know; Evangelion, Gunbuster, FLCL and the like

  • From what I've heard, Gainax had already formed at that time ... it was originally called Daicon Film. The founders, who were the animators, merely changed the name to Gainax.

  • Have you seen Otaku no Video? Kind of show how they formed in anime form.

  • So, THIS is where the WHOLE sequence with Bunny Girl Haruko in FLCL CAME FROM?!!! Suddenly, it ALL makes sense!

  • God I love youtube! Thanks so much for posting this. I have not seen it since I lost my vhs copy, like, ten years ago! Love it!

  • Thanks for posting this. I love Gainax stuff.

  • Gawd that brings back memmories...

  • yeah it's like III then IV kinda makes sence when you see it, the whole daicon thing...

  • This appears to be both films consecutivley, rather then a promotional video...

  • The first one is a summary of the Daicon III video.
