  • i remember when my grandma relaxed my hair at age 7 and at first i was ok with it, but then i had crazy moments where i would put water in my hair and run around outside in the wind with my hair all out. By the end of the day my hair was all knotted lol

  • Oh my! I so would have gotten TORE up! Which leads to my memories of not being able to touch my hair, which carried over to when I went to the shop I was scared to touch it, scratch it, say I didn't like it, etc. Thank God for freedom! Now I am nicely assertive/verbal about how I feel and what I want.

  • I wish you lived across the street from me cuz I would be at your house laughing all the time. You'll be answering the door like, you were just here an hour ago and I will just tell you "I ran out of medicine Sug so I need to re-up" lol.

  • SHUG THIS VID WAS SO FUNNY! :)

  • My next memory was my mom always trying to put the Shirly Temple curls in my hair. I had pretty long hair and my mom wouldnt let me get a relaxer. Well, one time she did the curls and it looked super cute! Too bad the next day the curls started falling out in clumps where she heated the curling iron up to much. You know the kind you leave on the stove to heat up. Not fun to unpin your hair in the morning and the curls come out with the pin...

  • Lol! I used to take my hair down too. But I waited till I got to school. I have two hair memories. One was my gramdma, RIP, was pressing my hair in the living room. Well, suddendly I felt a singing in the back. My grandma said I was up out of the chair and in the bedroom so quick she didn't know what happened.

  • Your mom and you have the same teeth!:) My only hair memory was sitting by the stove on Saturdays night getting my hair pressed and having to "hold my ear". I still would get burnt on the ear and forehead! My mom would be yelling " I told you to sit still!"

  • My favorite hair memory is my grandmother burning me with the hot comb, but trying to play it off by saying, "That was the steam!" and I would think, "Steam don't feel like metal!" Every time I think of that time, I would crack up uP UP!

  • AWWW. Baby Sug was SO cute! LOL @ you feenin' for a jheri curl.

  • Good morning! Because there were 10 of us kids & I was one of the youngest, my oldest sister-10 years old- used to have to comb my hair. She was very mean, impatient, and wud style my hair in about three plaits - 1 hanging down in the back, and 1 on each side which she would tie together at the top of my big ole head - I hated it! My other memory is as a teen, how because I was and still am impatient with doing my hair, I burned my forehead with the curling iron. Stupid scar lasted for years!

  • Oh my gosh, I had those short and shirt sets too...was that like the little girl uniform of the 80's? And I had a favorite one that I wanted to wear like every day in the summer (no shorts and t-shirts at my school!)

But I'm chuckling that Mama Sug and Little Sug look just like modern day Sug...

  • My favorite memory is when I had to get my hair done at least twice a day. I thought I was a lil diva and I was special. My mom would do my hair again after lunch (summer time) because she said I wasn't going to walk around looking like a "booga" with my hair undone.

She couldn't understand why mothers in our neighborhood would let their girls go outside without their hair being done at all.

  • When I was a little girl my favorite hair memory was just wanting to have short braids like my cousins but since my hair was alot longer than theirs I had to get the Brandy "I wanna be down" 1995 braids XD

  • yesss you better serve me Rudy Huxtable realness

  • LMAO your mother was patient!

  • My most poignant hair memory is that I didn't have any 4 a long while. When I finally got some,my mother gave me a kiddie perm which led 2 a bald spot n the back of my head at the nape. I have not been able 2 re-grow hair there since. When I was in high school and the up-dos were big, I always had 2 leave out a piece at the bottom 2 cover the spot. SMH

  • Sug, I tried this when I was 6. I got a woopin'...lol!!

  • My favorite hair memory was deciding to stop getting my hair straightened in fifth grade. But soon after that this new boy started @ the school; I ran home fast as I could to let my mom know that she could dust off the hot comb cause my hair needed to be laid hunty.

  • @agnoteoz hahahahahahahaahah Too funny!

  • My favorite childhood hair memory...That moment when my older sister had just finished a cornrowed hairstyle on me. I would stand in the mirror and admire my shiny plaits. And if she used beads (held in place with aluminum foil), you couldn't tell me NOTHIN'!!!! LOL

  • I would beg and plead for long, thick braids like Patra! I wanted nothing more than to look like Brandy or Janet Jackson. I remember I got them when I was around 6-7 and no one could tell me nothing! My braids were down my back and I walked around flipping my hair like I was coming out of the water in a welcome to Jamaica commercial LOL

  • Well, my mom and dad would keep our hair in Afros (70s baby)... but my hair didn't really take off and grow until I got into my teens, (hense my nickname "boyhead")... people would always say 'He's a pretty little boy'... lol. My hair is now long, but the nickname stuck!

  • and watch. It was the worst! Led to my first relaxer at 7 because both my mother and I had had enough!

  • My memory was the infamous pressing of the hair by the stove.ahhhhhh trauma! I'd wail and cry and my brothers would sit by

  • my mother couldnt braid** haha typing on my droid!

  • i remember my couldnt braid but she would always be trying to braid my hair up...i was like in grade school. everytime she did some plaits or cornrows with extensions i would come out looking like predator ...from alien & predator lol. i few times i REFUSED to go to school coz she had me looking like boo boo the fool. but alas after a brief uprising against the hair tyrant i was forced to go to school looking like the end of a dirty mophead. that was a long shameful walk to the bus stop =`^<

  • haha! love this!!

  • That's so cool how a little child was so creative when doing their hair. Lol at cutting your bangs, they didn't look so bad. Brave little girl.

  • I never wanted a Jheri curl. Just to wear my hair loose. My mama would always plait or cornrow my hair. My front edges never grew all way out and she would always put these baby plaits in the front that I HATED. I HAD long natural hair and when I got to High School I permed it. MISTAKE. Never the same again. Finally got healthy hair again. LOL, I can relate on what we want as kids

  • oh wow, you are the SPITTING IMAGE of your Mom.

  • Wow! you look just like your mum!!!

  • Oh goodness, you look just like your mama

  • Awwww you were a beautiful Baby! with all that hair!! I had the jeri curl. but most times before that I had my hair straightened. One time I twisted my hair up in a hot comb and it got stuck in there, so I had to cut off my hair in the front and that became my bang. LOL

  • wow you look just like your mom!

  • That's cute!!! You were a cute kid...your mama had a LOT of patience!!!

  • Why did I have two short outfits one, orange/red and another blue/red that I thought I was the STUFF in, okay??? LOL And I had the matching beads in my hair. You couldn't tell me nuthin!

  • The picture of your mother looks just like you in present day...wow!

  • I would always have the "librarian bun". Ughhh, I hated it, it was rare that my mom would let me wear my hair down. :-(

  • Sug, it's a wonder your mother didn't beat your behind! LOL, I would have been so mad.

  • Okay, i think my parents had the EXACT same record player. *chuckle*

  • My Grandma would take rolled up pieces of brown paper bags and use it like a roller to curl my pressed hair. Then add her old panty hose, cut the legs off, tie it in a knot and that was my bonnet. It was clean but that was hot mess.

  • Your mom seems like a patient loving woman how wonderful for u! My memory is my mother wouldn't let me press my hair so when I went to brklyn to stay with my grandma my aunt pressed my hair because I was suppose to stay overnight . Well my

Mom came right back and my aunt pookie ( yes that was her nickname ran me around the corner and dunked my head in a fire hydrant. My mom was mad I was wet but she never knew about my hair. Smile.

  • I think we all wanted a Jheri Curl in the 80s. My mom let the neighbor style my hair and this Chic put a Jheri Curl in my hair and stripped it. My mom had to cut it in order for it to grow back healthy. What a mess! The Chic had the nerve to lie and say she didn't know she used the Jheri Curl product. Foolishness! ! !

  • Hey Sug. I had a Jheri curl from 3rd to 6th grade. My mother's idea. Not mine. In 4th grade I remember my mother putting so much activator spray in my hair it would drip. One day at school we're standing during morning devotion and that stuff decides it wants to drip on my metal chair. Ugh. The 5th grade boys were in the row behind us. What a way to start off a school day.

  • i remember i wanted 2 press my hair myself. i was in 5th grade. i thought about it all day @ school. when school got out i ran home, turned on the stove, put the pressing comb on the stove until it was smokin HOT and then put it directly in my hair...my hair fell right on the FLOOR honey lol. 3hrs later my mom came home from work, smelled the burnt hair even though i swept it up and tried to hide it...she looked at me, turned my head to the side...and said, oh well i guess u will learn one day!!

  • gurl i got a jerry curl and they for got to tell my mom i couldnt get it cuz.....i still had a damn prem in my head!!!! need i say more all my hair fell out i was mess up gurl smh

  • I wasnt trying to cut my own hair. I talked my lil sister into cutting her ends. With wire cutters. While my mom was taking a nap. Oh did I get in truh-bull!

  • My mom was not the best stylist, when she would braid my hair the right side would be good but that left side would come across all the way to the middle...edges are still thin on that side lol

  • I also sat on my mother's bed while she was sleeping and shopped the front of my hair to make bangs. They were too short and fluffy to do anything with them so I walked around with a fro bang through junior high school LOL

  • Your momma not letting you get a jherri curl was a blessing in the long run! I had one and ......... Let's put it like this: I'm still recuperating #prayforme LOL

  • Awww! You're so cute! You're also lucky to have so many pics of you in those various hairstyles. :D I guess my worst childhood hair memory is a teen one. I grew out my perm, would straighten my hair, and by the time I got to school, it was an afro. And that wasn't cute in those days!

  • For some reason my Mother never did my hair the night before to add to that, I was tended headed, I gave my mother a hard time when she tried to braid my hair in a style. Every morning she'd put two big corn-rows going down my head. The only problem was that my mother was NOT a morning person. My corn-rows would come out lopsided. One cornrow would be at the top and the other would be at the side of my head...every day LOL

  • @exoticeyes32 That is funny.

  • @exoticeyes32 lmao!!!

  • girl yes. I also cut bangs into my hair while my mama was not supervising me lol. She saw me and went off. I got a spanking behind that mess. lol

  • You cut bangs....I cut my whole "past my chin length" ponytail off. Yes maam right in the front of my head. lol My mom was fuming. To make matters worse the next day of school was picture day!!!! LOL LOL LOL

  • @aynot321 hahahahaha I would forget to tell my mama about picture day, so the first few years, I looked crazy. LOL! O_O

  • OMG! I just had a flashback of sending my daughter to school with her hair one way and her coming home another... I'd be like, "Nooooooooo!." lol

  • Lawd havin his mercy I was LMBO at this one. My mom used to do wrong side braids all over my head. All I wanted was french braids and she used to say in her Belizean accent " beggars can't be choosers". So I stared to practice and finally did it myself all fancy at 11. I never wanted a curl though I did want a relaxer and she said no but allowed me to wear what I now know as braid outs

  • I cut bangs in my hair too...AND my 4 year old daughter did that very thing...terrible i tell you...just horrible...smh lol...what is it with lil girls and scissors??? smh another great video Sug!

  • OH MY GOODNESS!! That is my daughter exactly! What didyour mamado when u did all of that? My child is 6 and shewants to always wear her hair out or in a ponytail the other day i hadher super long hair in two pigtails with two small cornrows in the front and both pigtails had three plaits.Long story long sent her to school came home hair is completly taken out and in a crazy ponytail.I said how did u do that in school and not get in trouble."I did it little by little while I did my work".UGH

  • lmaoooo you a mess girl..... i bet your mom was mad every time she came home like what the hell this child do to her hair this time lol

  • @ItsSandyCheeks That's probably why she gave me a relaxer AND I was tender headed...still is actually. LOL!

  • Long story but I actually had one of the first jheri curls ever. I was a hair model in the Care Free Curl Curl Contest back in 1980. I was a hair model. My stylist won the competition for doing the best curl. It was regional. I couldn't go to the nationals because I was too young. 15 at the time. It was exciting.

  • @secretsandlies09 You famous!

  • @whoissugar Yes, I should get a tee-shirt, eh? :)

  • I love this video!!! I remember in Kindergarten my Aunt meeting my Mom and I at school like 3 days a week so she could comb my hair before class. My Mom can't even part straight so my aunt would be hooking my hair up in the hallway!!! Barettes , grease and all!!! Ur the best Sug!

  • @mssas413 LOL! Not in the hall!! Thanks!

  • My mother had a do she called the funk rock (she tried to be cool). It was a small ponytail in front that hung down in my face with a bobble on the end and two more pony's in the back that kind of sat off to one side. When I was finally allowed to get a jheri curl at 8 (IKR, SMH) I still had to wear ponytails. The only style I could do myself was a banana clip. I only cut my own hair once and my bangs were nowhere near as together as yours--can you say bald spot front and center o_0

  • @keish1 LOL! That's funny.

  • I'll never forget my mom putting baby bottle knockers in my hair for my 2nd grade school pictures! She thought it was cute...I thought otherwise. Guess that's why I frowned in the pic lol

  • @ALifeofPeculiarity NO ma'am! I can't breathe!

  • Me and my sis hated getting what we calle the 'dinosaur' from my mum - three big old cornrows from the front to the back of our head. Sad times. We'd sit on the floor in front of her praying she wouldn't part our hair with the comb that way - was not a good look. And if we touched, slap on the hand with comb, lmao!

  • @ndzalln hahahahahahahahaah WOW! That aint right. LOL!!

  • Cute!! I didn't do much with my hair when i was at that age. I just tied ribbons at the ends of my pony tails and that was my "hair"! Lawd. I got my 1st relaxer at about 11/12, stayed about 1 year with long hair, then resorted to dyes, gel, bleach, scissors!

  • @JRenneaC Honey, I used to put stockings on my head like it was hair. O_O

  • @whoissugar Now THAT'S hilarious!!

  • Awh what a cute video! I had to be around 8 or 9 and I convinced my mom to let me get bangs. Well, she would roll my bangs up with two sponge rollers and it would be all tight. Girl you couldn't tell me NOTHIN!

  • @Mellyro27 hahahahahaha Did it have a dent in it?

  • @whoissugar It did!!! I forgot about that dent!! LOL! No comb was strong enough to fix it. SMH SMH

  • LOL@you and that hair. I can't think of any hair memories but I did have a Jheri curl, bless my heart. That thing was awful. I don't know why anyone would do that to their hair.

  • @Sassymarkrep LOL!!

  • My mother used to put one million two-strand twists all over my head (with rubber bands like Da Brat) because she could go without combing my hair for at least a week. I used to hate it because the kids would call me "spider head." What's funny is ... I style my hair like that now (w/o the rubber bands, of course)!!! Mama was such a visionary:) LOL!!!

  • @sdperry00 Spider head? LOL! Kids are so wrong.

  • My childhood hair memory was at age 7 when my mother pressed and curled my hair in those dreaded shirley temple curls. I hated them because they made my head look 5 times bigger. I waited til my mom went to work and combed them out because I wanted my hair to hang on my shoulders and down my back. My sisters scuffled for hours trying to re curl my hair before my mom came home. We all got fussed at when my mom came home all because I wanted my hair to hang.

  • @chocolatechild72 LOL! God bless your sister for having your back.

  • I remember my mom would just put two pigtails, part down the middle, in my hair. I hated going to recess at school with the other kids who would play Duck ,Duck, Goose because they had to tap my head right where the part was and it would HURT! Unfortunately, Mommy didn't know many other styles.

  • @Tangerinesorbet WOW! Kids you to smack people in the head real hard while play duck duck goose. smh.

  • Omg! Childhood memory. I'm Ghanaian so my mother would alternate between plain afro puffs and these elaborate african thread hairstyles. Lawd my po'head. My mother has always been lk 5'2 but that woman has an arm like a miner. I remember when my sister and I would sit down every Sunday night to get our hair did, we would just pray she wouldn't come out with the costco size thread spool. If she did, pain was comin. Lol. So it was always lk rolling the.dice when she would get ready to do our hair.

  • @Yaa13 LOL! That's a great story.

  • You're so adorable when you were little ^.^ aww :D Now you're Fierce and Fabulous Honey :) Thanks for sharing!

  • @MyYuniko Thanks!

  • Vintage Sug was ahead of her time. You were to cute. Love the short outfit. I thought I was Edward Scissor Hands and did a BC (expectantly). I wanted some bangs. Chile, my mamma went to comb through my hair and hair was falling to the floor. It's a wonder I'm still here. My po' mamma tried everything to get my hair to grow and it was finally paying off. My mom braided my hair b4 she went outta town. She didn't believe my father until she got home and saw my braid-out. It was cute to me.

  • @zheahra hahahahahaha no you didn't cut it too. LOL!

  • My most memorable childhood hair memory has to be back in the mid 90's. I was maybe 5 or 6 years old. My aunt "snuck" a relaxer in my head ON THE FRONT PORCH. No one told me I wasn't supposed to scratch my head so of coarse my scalp was on fire. And I was yelling and screaming to top of my lungs; it hurt so bad! People were looking at me from cars and bikes!! So upsetting :(

  • @NapturalJas LAWD HAM MERCY! I can't stop laughing.

  • Ponytails and barrettes of all colors.

  • @c0c0puffz LOL! Yup.

  • The DIY Jheri Curl is hilarious!

  • @chanel84 That was the original wash and go. LOL!

  • Lol I enjoyed these memories. You were quite a cute baby

  • @simonewilson410 Thanks!

  • Braids and beads, Kool-Aid dye in my curl activator and to afro puffs and the side of head! priceless!!!

  • @28Tarajoy Oh snap! I did the Kool-Aid thing too! WOW!

  • Awwwww look at lil sug!

  • @VictoriousDestiny *WINK*

  • I had a curl in the 80's. I missed my first day of sixth grade to go and get this done. I was soooo fly you couldn't tell me not one darn thing lol. I kept that curl until my senior year of high school then I went to get my curl done and at the last minute I got it all cut off and got a relaxer with a Anita Baker cut.

  • @manyangels300 I did the same exact thing!!

  • @manyangels300 No you didn't miss school!LOL!

  • I wanted a jerry curl too...but my mom wasn't having it. So I wore my hair mostly in one big pony tail and I hated that style so much. Until I seen Sade's smooth operator video ...lol my PE teacher start calling me Lil Sade...lmao

  • @Asha3000 LOL! That's funny.

  • Braids, braids, and more braids !!!! And getting my hair washed & styled in the kitchen lol ..........

  • @raidai4 My grandmother would wash me and my cousins' hair in the kitchen sink. We HATED getting our hair washed. My oldest cousin hated getting her hair washed the most. She would cry, scream, and put on a show.

  • @ladybird955 HA! I would cut up too. smh.

  • @raidai4 LOL!

  • Braids and beads honey....BRAIDS AND BEADS!!!!! with aluminum foil on the ends

  • @EllengeeEvolve hahahahaha not the foil?! LOL!!

  • @EllengeeEvolve Me too!

  • wow you look so much like your mother and lol i had the same ( the blue one) outfit but mine was green lmao and i loved mine to

  • @yeyo1043 LOL!

  • My mom use to put two boo boo braid down the sides if my head...with a crazy looking Chinese bang, that would turn into a puff ball the more I ran around because I didn't have a relaxer. Can you picture that hot mess!

  • @cedfact LOL! LAWD! I can't stop laughing. LOL!

  • @whoissugar HOLD ON TO YOUR CHAIR...I GOT SOMETHING FOR YOU!!!!!

  • You look so much like your mom , cute sug !!

  • Ur soo cute!! My childhood memory is that I would watch my mom do her weaves and wigs (she was a pro at them) and one day I took her expensive human long (Tina turner circa1960) wig and wore it to school. Let's say my a... Got whooped!

  • @polifonyann hahahahahahah So funny!

  • Lol. Now did you get your butt whooped after all those failed attempts?!

  • @MusicLova84 Nope. Never. My mama whipped me once and it didn't hurt but she slapped the hell out of me when I was around 15. O_O

  • I wrote my mom a letter explaining to her why I should get those Janet Jackson box braids. I didn't get my first perm until 19 years old and I hated it so I went back to natural. You are too funny Suga!

  • @dominiquelovely LOL! Not a letter. LOL!

  • awwwwwww baby sug is too cute ^_^. My hair memory sigh I never liked my hair cause my mother never knew how to handle it (her curl pattern was a million times looser than mine grew faster etc mine was the total opposite) I took a scissors once and chopped off a big ole patch in the back of my head lol my mother wanted to die. Sigh I have a lot more stories...

  • @p03ticuti3 LOL! have a bunch of stories too. smh.

  • Hilarious! As for myself, I had a jherri curl( plus a chip front tooth lol) from the age of 8 all the way through junior high school and I can honestly say you missed nothing. Jherri curls were greasy, messy, and collected alot of dirt and lint. Wearing that plastic cap to keep it moist sucked too, but the worst part was getting caught in the rain and all that curl juice running onto your face and in your eyes then afterwards you looking like someone slapped in your face with a greasy spoon.

  • @mskiki30001 This made me scream! MY husband and I were laughing so hard. O_O LOL!!

  • Oh yeah, you and your lil sister Brittney look JUST LIKE your mom! Is Karmbaby adopted? LOL, just kidding!

  • Gurl! I got my first relaxer at 12 and had a curl at 13-15...but holl up, before all that, my ma would plait my hair up and when she would take it out, I used to want to wear it like that...a braidout honey! I was ahead of my time. I my ma was like "No! you ain't doing that!"

  • @MzCrochetDreams POW! That's called full circle.

  • You are too funny. All I can remember is girl holding down my ears for that weekly press and curl. Sitting by the kitchen stove. My mom had the old iron curling irons that you put on the stove to heat up and she would go to werk on this head.

  • @artsy282 HA! I remember that too.

  • You are so lucky to have so many childhood photos chronicling your life. I was the third child so by the time I was born; my parents were over taking pics of their kids. lol

Most of the childhood pics of me were taken by other family members.

  • @yser1 LOL! My kids get tired of me with my cameras.

  • I had a jheri curl when I was 10. I remember that bag I had to wear when I was sleeping, crunching all night. I loved my jheri curl, but my mother cut it all off and made me get a relaxer a couple of years later. Fast forward 27 years later, I'm natural now, rocking an afro. Love it.

  • @eejohnson1990 LOL! Not the bag?!

  • @whoissugar Yes ma'am. You had to spray the activator on your hair at night and put the plastic bag on it to keep it moist. Nothing worse than a dry jheri curl. When you toss and turn, the bag would crunch and you get a wiff of the scent of activator that seep out of the bag. Lol

  • Aww look at lil Sug! You kinda look like Rudy from the Cosby Show when you were little! BTW, lovin' the nail polish......yeah you know I peeped that. ;op OOooo you cut your hair?! That's grounds for a butt whoppin'! Oooo I wanna play too (video response). I gotta did up some photos first.

  • @Smile2DayTears2Morro I can't wait for your video. My mama didn't whoop me, but she made me write and read...which I loved to do anyway. :)

  • You are your mom's twin, I remember having a curl and being upset because the chick always used the tiny rods and my hair would be big and frizzy, instead of curly, she'd always say, I'll use them next time. Then I started rocking braids, thank goodness because the chemicals even with relaxers would make my hair fall flat out. As a teen, I had no problem cutting my hair and rocking my natural sometimes just because I was bored that week, and still do. Love your vids, Sugar, keep them coming!

  • @JraiLuvChild LOL! Not the small rods. LOL! Thanks for supporting love.
