RSPCA reccomends putting them in a freezer for 35-45 minutes. It doesn't kill it, just puts it into a coma. Then place it in a rolling boil. By dropping them straight into the water the muscles contract and lose some taste. We put them into an ice bath after they turn red or they can continue to cook in the shell. Those bugs look good!
You should put the crab in the freezer or in an ice slurry for about 10 minutes prior to cooking which is the humane thing to do as it puts the crab to sleep and also prevents them from "throwing their legs" during cooking.
