  • First, you do not ever want to use a machine in the gym, EVER, with few exceptions. Machines remove the synergy from stabilizers which allows them to develop along with the prime movers, removes the advantage of the stretch shortening cycle (also called stretch reflex due to vaso-elasticity), and hampers nervous system adaptations. ALWAYS use free weights.
