Hurricanes were the slower of the 2 british fighters but were able to turn in a tighter climbing turn and could be kept on the edge of stall ( side slip ) more efficiently than the spit or 109. They were also able to absorb lots of battle damage due to the rear fuselage construction which was of wood and not stressed metal covering a metal prestressed frame. Tha guns on the brit fighters were rifle caliber which was a downside. One report said it could take upto 700 hits to down an enemy.
@holtbp you sure on the rifle calibre of the britsplane . i heard that they could only carry enough ammunition for one seconds worth of firing. it makes sense they wouldnt fly for very long otherwise
@goj09dale Hey mate: Yeah the calibre was .303 or 7.7mm during the Battle of Britain. A Spit and the Hurri carried belt ammo in 100 round belts spliced together to form 300 round continous feed.
They could jam but the weapon was basically a braowning 30 cal rechambered for 303 british ammo and was very relaible.
The Russian aircraft, paricularly early in the war were not particularly effective against German types. Russia emerged victorious due to other factors, namely massively superior numbers and a shorter supply chain. Only later in in the war were Russian aircraft comparable in performance to German types. During the Battle of Britain the RAF actually copied the Luftwaffe tactics.
Russians sorry to any USSR lovers were all most as awful as the french ! they just thourght sheer numbers would win the war .. and it didn't they got the arse handed to them by a country less than half there size ... it was only the cold winter that saved russia
You don't have to say sorry but you're wrong. French fought long and hard but were unprepared for the German Blitzkrieg, good soldiers and pilots though I might add. Where Russia actually embarrassed itself was the war with Finland.
lol what WW2 germans did the same tactic they used in WW1 lol if they wern't expecting that well .. lol plus had built massive defenses due to the money from the treaty of versi but not over belgium lol ! hmm brains that is also fort long and hard ?? German had controll of france by 1940 the war only started in 1939
I'm saying the French fought hard with what they had. They didn't win because they weren't led by bloodsucking fascists who had been planning war since the early thirties.
In WW1 they had the largest army in europe liturally millions!! no exageration and they still lost .. so hmm ,, yeah although i did say before i respect the french as to be fare anybody would get smashed by the might german war machiene however its made me smile when you said "with what they had" when they had the largest army in europe and the best trench defenses with underground trains for transporting troops to front line
Thats cause those Germans are so darned efficient and have no sense of humour, and possibly enjoy life less than the French. Underground trains? Thats new to me. I don't think anyone really 'won' WWI, but I guess France didn't exactly sparkle considering their manpower. They did do well at Verdun (well eventually booting the Germans out over the course of a year).
Miserable war, with non of the complexity and variation of WWII. Still fascinating.
yeah i agree .. :( interesting thow i can't spell the name of the line sounds like Agencor or something like that .. they cemented there machiene guns and artillery in place so the germans couldn't use them if the line was ever taken however as germany went through Belguim again the defences never really saw action except against the italians a lil bit
also those millions of troops in ww1 were uniformed in Bright blue and red lol so that might have been a big facter lol :| but to be fair WW1 nobody new what they were doing
German tactics were awsome like Blitzcrek meaning "lightning war" how ever The battle of britain showed how its the individuals that makes the differance not the people behind desks
''By August 1941 AOC Air Vice Marshal Sholto Douglas himself expressed doubts over the wisdom of continuing such European fighter operations,.'' WOOT SHOLTO DOUGLAS WAS MY GREAT GREAT UNCLE

During operation Barbarossa, Russia had only Mig-3, LaGG-3 at the front line. And they weren't spectacular!

Maginot line? Not the best defence considering Germany went round the top TWICE, you think they'd have learned by WWII.

Yeah, trench warfare came out of nowhere, and I guess, everyone was pleased to see it go out of fashion just as quickly!

The RAF was and still is an "old boy club" .The Polish and French were the cannon fodder in the RAF during WW2.

Luftwaffe pilots really knew what they were doing but us brits and the russians were initially quite behind with tactics!
