Yeah, actually rolffz I bought "Spirit of '76" and "Son of Spirit" when they came out and saw the three piece Spirit that toured behind them (along with some other incarnations). Those are very worthy LPs and live they were always good -- but my point was that after Sardonicus they fell off the map; never could regain the momentum artistically or commercially. But I loved this band.
OMG who is that brilliant looking blonde haired guitarist geez he's really good looking name please? What nationality are they and what tv programme is it from?
I recall seeing this on TV on it's original airing -- "The Music Scene" (hosted by David Steinberg) maybe? Anyway, this was their attempt at a hit single but it didn't happen. "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" was next and then no more from this most overlooked and underrated of bands.
@Misterhappynyc There actually were a quite a few more albums from the band Spirit after Dr Sardonicus, but not many of them came very close to compare to the earlier tracks that made them the true legends they are and for how they should have been recognized.
@Misterhappynyc Spirit of '76 was a trippy Florida/Hawaii influenced compilation of loosely assemble studio tracks and out takes that contains some real gems if you have the patience to sit through some of the trippy effects/sounds and 'studio banter & playtime'.
@Misterhappynyc Spirit influenced many bands like Led Zeppelin They opened for Spirit and admittedly copped some of there songs, too. Check out Spirit's Taurus and the opening notes/chords to Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven. Also listen to Spirit's Space Child and Steely Dan's FM.
One of the greatest 'unknown' influencing rock bands that truly belong in the RnR Hall of Fame.
@Misterhappynyc Bass player Mark Andes went on to play in the popular LA Country/Folk Rock band FireFall (You are the Woman -(that I've Always Dreamed Of)' ) and later in the very successful band Heart.
Jay Ferguson launched the band JoJo Gunne (RunRunRun) and continued on his own solo career with big hits like the song 'Thunder Island'.
You see that drummer's face at the beginning? That's jazz drummer Ed Cassidy -- Randy California's stepfather who was already in his 40's when he played for Spirit. With the death of Tuli Kupferberg (The Fugs) -- Ed is the OLDEST rocker alive today. He's even older than Chuck Berry. Today, Cassidy is 88. Can you believe this? A great rock drummer is 88 !!!!! Papa John Creach wasn't the only older generation musician to belong to a rock group. Love you Mr Cassidy. Great drum rolls and fills.
This is one of the most finely crafted rock songs of all time. And these guys just lay it down proper. One of my favourite bands and always have been really, really underated. Every one of them shine on their instruments!
... it surprises me that this song isn't censored by the mind control freaks with all the money they have... they don't want anyone thinking about the world in which we live that is so convoluted... I really am surprised... Thanks for the post
Always one of my favorite bands. I saw them many times in Austin, in many variations, but always with California and Cassidy. Still love em. Got almost all their stuff on vinyl. Thanks for posting.
On the movie "Hendrix" ,Jimi mentions jammin with Randy and their split I believe. Cool post. I had never heard this and was recommended to find and give it a listen.
As you said -excellent quality. I was a Spirit fan all my life and I remember seeing that on the "Music Scene" way back in 1969. They were a tremendous rock band but had the lousiest luck. That song did have trouble getting airplay plus that song's ownership prevented it from being issued on an album until 1974.
They were told NOT to attend "Woodstock" and instead promote their album "Clear".
On top of all that, Randy California (the guy playing the lucite guitar) drowned in 1997.
Superb! This is very timely considering the criminal molestation of our women, our children and our disadvantaged by the federal government. If there was a war on terror, our borders would have been completely sealed on Sept. 12, 2001. infowars.com Great post

Good band, but too complicated for their own good. Once they got in their stride with the epic "Dr.Sardonicus",it was already too late.....sadly.
