The question, how many have you cured is not fair. There are plenty of diseases that are treatable but not curable. Example: hemophilia. It has also been found that certain mental disorders are genetically linked independent of who raises the children. And plenty of beneficial drugs have side effects. It is probably true that psychiatrists may over-diagnose, but that does not mean that all psychiatry is fraud. People actually benefit from these treatments.
@hobbit934: Not a fair question? What would you say if a medical doctor told you that he NEVER cured anyone, and that he can't cure anyone? Not being able to cure some particularly challenging illnesses is one thing (and obviously not a good thing), but NEVER curing ANYBODY simply means that you are unable to do your job. A MD who never cures any patients would get his license revoked. A psychiatrist who never cured patients is an average psychiatrist and he will still collect insurance money.

If psychiatry had cures for most of it's "illnesses" and was still stumped by a few challenging diseases, that would be one thing. But this is not the case. Further what psychiatry calls "treatment" invariably falls under the heading of *brain damage*. Chemical lobotomy, frying the brain on high voltage or outright lobotomy... It's all about damaging the patient's mind.
@sylverdrag Lobotomy has been replaced by psychiatric medications. Kind of like we don't bleed patients anymore. I've actually seen psychiatric meds work in family members. They change the levels of certain chemicals that are naturally in your body. You know chemotherapy just works by killing rapidly dividing cells. It takes out both cancer and certain non-cancer cells. We have also not reached the day where most genetic disorders are curable but treatment is much better than just suffer.
@sylverdrag Most genetic disorders are not curable but treatable. Isn't taking a pill every day worth getting your life back? Even HIV treatment, 10 more years is better than a few months. A better question would have been, how many have benefitted from treatment. This video is out of date. Evidence for a genetic component for certain mental illnesses has been found. There are even genetic tests for some mental illnesses now. People need to read the literature rather than trust youtube.
I had the illnesses and suffered the horrible effects well before I even knew what mental illness was. After I learned about mental illness I realized certain ones fit me like a glove. I can testify that although many people might be overdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, that doesn't mean that those of us with these mental illnesses don't have it. It's very real to the people that suffer. The brain is complex and hard to read. There is no 'test' to measure how depressed you are by drawing your blood.
I wonder what those people say about the success stories that people have that now live easily with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder due to medication.
@Zantaer I am considered severe PTSD and was put on the medecation route. Yes a lot of people can live with their disease because of drugs, but I refuse to live in a half there state (the drugs really mess with my head) just so that I can 'live' with PTSD. For the sake of my children I went on meds until I had a handle of better ways of doing things. I have been off of drugs now for 2 years and have been told not to bother back to my phsychologist or my psichiatrist.

I do believe that mental illnesses exist, given the facts that different people have the same characteristics even living in different hemispheres and cultures. Psychology no longer calls them diseases, they are now referred to as disorders. To have a mental disorder one must exhibit behaviors that are:
1) DEVIANT from normal behavior.
2) DYSFUNCTIONAL, meaning they cannot function in society when others can.
3) DISTRESSFUL, meaning it causes the patient a great amount of stress.
If someone's behavior does not fall under ALL THREE categories, they ARE NOT diagnosed with a mental disorder. Many people have (1) deviant behaviors, but few have ALL THREE.
Body types. How one hold's them selves. Yes. You are judged by how you look. That's just the way it is. How you are judge affects who you are. Change for the better, that is how you change the world. Lengthen the spine, free the neck, then you can balance the head atop the shoulders. This is a subtle change and can happen while your are under the stress of changing. Good luck all.

i have a mental ilness but i am very lucky i have ADHD but i was put into a small school but my bypolar uncle well i megt him for 30 minutes then the next day he died.
I do think that many people are over diagnosed with this brain disease approach to mental illness, and prescribed medications they do not need. But I'm skeptical of those who say there is no basis for ever treating patients with medications. It's hard for me to believe that something like schizophrenia is no more than a socail construct.

@abbygrace00 Sort of, the medications can be helpful but they can also be harmful, that is the problem. However, there are many different theories for causes, all of which are multifactoral and involve the entire human biology, which modern psychiatry ignores. Even talk therapy and all psychiatric treatments can have some benefits, but as Dr. Mark Hyman says, "you cant talk your way out of mercury poisoning".
@abbygrace00 The problem with medications is they actually are not treating anything, they are changing the chemistry and wishing for good effects. The only way to solve mental illness is to objectively trace it back to etiology, talk therapy is subjective. 1/3 of depressed patients have low folic acid, Homocysteine is associated with depression, inflammation is linked to depression, gluten sensitivity is linked to many psychiatric disorders. I would try eating dirt if I thought it would take away my torture. This video however sounds like it's something that is very, very worth trying but will I have to come off my med's to give it a shot?
@jhartist123 No, Dr. Hyman recommends you dont come off your medication without the supervision of your doctor. His plan is a little bit more complicated than diet and nutrition because as he points out there are many factors. If you finish the book and follow the general plan plus specialized treatment based on your scores you may be able to figure out the main source of the problem. It would be best to find a practitioner of functional medicine.
Mental illness is a joke and scam. I was diognosed with psychosis cause I heard four different voices. But I befriended those four voices and not they talk to me whenever I want them to. I feel much happier now than when I was taking medication for it.
apocolst420, that is quite interresting to me because I found out last month that my immune system is barely functioning. I have had pnuemonia 7 times in the past 3 years. I've been hospitalized twice and was in ICU once. I have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, OCD and a generalized anxiety disorder. I can't help but wonder if there's a connection. I find it worth looking into. Thanks for the info.

It does not focus on the disease because Dr. Hyman says that is pointless because the cause is not homogeneous. Mental illness is not mental illness, it is a biological disorder within the body which alters the brain and results in "mental" dysfunction, he never said that the peoples SYMPTOMS do not exist. @bestlives Those problems which arrise within our biology have a deep impact on our mentality, but are overlooked in modern psychiatries fallacy of focusing on the "MIND", which is entirely subjective. The entire diagnosis and prescribing of medication is done by guesswork and assumptions that not only these diseases are more then a group of symptoms, but are merely just chemical imbalances, which can be fixed by prescribing harmful medication. @bestlives Nobody has been cured by psychiatric medications, because the medications are not treating diseases, SSRI's merely change the brains chemistry artificially to create an effect which does not address the cause of a chemical imbalance. 95% of serotonin is made in the gut, not the brain, in fact the gut-brain connection is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle to understanding mental illness, if the integrity of the gut is compromised, the whole body can suffer. @jhartist123 Go for it, you can research it too, it is called PANDAS and is well documented but is associated with younger ages for some reason. Ultimately, I would reccommend you read "The Ultramind Solution" by Dr. Mark Hyman, which presents a wealth of information focusing on the underlying cause of all disorders. Not all cases of OCD are associated with this, but presented in the book is a map to figure out how biology relates to it. The whole idea of this is what matters.

There sometimes better ways to treat mental illness, but the doctors that try these new treatments are quickly silenced. It's what the big pharm corps don't want you to know! Most so-called "mental disorders" are the result of emotional immaturity due to some kind of trauma. Cognitive function has been impeded and the only cure is to bring these suffering people up to speed with the rational world. Black and white thinking, all-or-none, right or wrong, good vs bad and sweeping generalization are the most common features I have been observing throughtout my life. Self-centerness also results from that... Psychiatry is big business!

The question, how many have you cured is not fair. There are plenty of diseases that are treatable but not curable. Example: hemophilia. It has also been found that certain mental disorders are genetically linked independent of who raises the children. And plenty of beneficial drugs have side effects. It is probably true that psychiatrists may over-diagnose, but that does not mean that all psychiatry is fraud. People actually benefit from these treatments.

@hobbit934: Not a fair question? What would you say if a medical doctor told you that he NEVER cured anyone, and that he can't cure anyone? Not being able to cure some particularly challenging illnesses is one thing (and obviously not a good thing), but NEVER curing ANYBODY simply means that you are unable to do your job. A MD who never cures any patients would get his license revoked. A psychiatrist who never cured patients is an average psychiatrist and he will still collect insurance money.

If psychiatry had cures for most of it's "illnesses" and was still stumped by a few challenging diseases, that would be one thing. But this is not the case. Further what psychiatry calls "treatment" invariably falls under the heading of *brain damage*. Chemical lobotomy, frying the brain on high voltage or outright lobotomy... It's all about damaging the patient's mind.

@sylverdrag Lobotomy has been replaced by psychiatric medications. Kind of like we don't bleed patients anymore. I've actually seen psychiatric meds work in family members. They change the levels of certain chemicals that are naturally in your body. You know chemotherapy just works by killing rapidly dividing cells. It takes out both cancer and certain non-cancer cells. We have also not reached the day where most genetic disorders are curable but treatment is much better than just suffer.

A better question would have been, how many have benefitted from treatment. This video is out of date. Evidence for a genetic component for certain mental illnesses has been found. There are even genetic tests for some mental illnesses now. People need to read the literature rather than trust youtube.

I had the illnesses and suffered the horrible effects well before I even knew what mental illness was. After I learned about mental illness I realized certain ones fit me like a glove. I can testify that although many people might be overdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, that doesn't mean that those of us with these mental illnesses don't have it. It's very real to the people that suffer. The brain is complex and hard to read. There is no 'test' to measure how depressed you are by drawing your blood.

@Zantaer I am considered severe PTSD and was put on the medecation route. Yes a lot of people can live with their disease because of drugs, but I refuse to live in a half there state (the drugs really mess with my head) just so that I can 'live' with PTSD. For the sake of my children I went on meds until I had a handle of better ways of doing things. I have been off of drugs now for 2 years and have been told not to bother back to my phsychologist or my psichiatrist.

I do believe that mental illnesses exist, given the facts that different people have the same characteristics even living in different hemispheres and cultures. I believe in mental illnesses because My Mom has and so do I. What I don't believe in the way they treat the illnesses, it seems like they don't give a damn about new researches to find out an actual and effective treatment for it. Psychology no longer calls them diseases, they are now referred to as disorders. To have a mental disorder one must exhibit behaviors that are:
1) DEVIANT from normal behavior.
2) DYSFUNCTIONAL, meaning they cannot function in society when others can.
3) DISTRESSFUL, meaning it causes the patient a great amount of stress.
If someone's behavior does not fall under ALL THREE categories, they ARE NOT diagnosed with a mental disorder. Many people have (1) deviant behaviors, but few have ALL THREE.

Mental illness is real. People simply deny it because they don't understand and It's hard to understand if you aren't mentally ill.
Psychiatrists aren't out to get you. Many really want to help and medication is what they can offer, since it does help some people to lead normal lives.
There is no cure for mental illness. However, there's also no cure for cancer, and treatment for cancer is justified. What's the difference?

I do think that many people are over diagnosed with this brain disease approach to mental illness, and prescribed medications they do not need. But I'm skeptical of those who say there is no basis for ever treating patients with medications. It's hard for me to believe that something like schizophrenia is no more than a socail construct.

However, there are many different theories for causes, all of which are multifactoral and involve the entire human biology, which modern psychiatry ignores. Even talk therapy and all psychiatric treatments can have some benefits, but as Dr. Mark Hyman says, "you cant talk your way out of mercury poisoning".

The only way to solve mental illness is to objectively trace it back to etiology, talk therapy is subjective. 1/3 of depressed patients have low folic acid, Homocysteine is associated with depression, inflammation is linked to depression, gluten sensitivity is linked to many psychiatric disorders. Read The Ultramind Solution to understand!

I would try eating dirt if I thought it would take away my torture. This video however sounds like it's something that is very, very worth trying but will I have to come off my med's to give it a shot?

@jhartist123 No, Dr. Hyman recommends you dont come off your medication without the supervision of your doctor. His plan is a little bit more complicated than diet and nutrition because as he points out there are many factors. If you finish the book and follow the general plan plus specialized treatment based on your scores you may be able to figure out the main source of the problem. It would be best to find a practitioner of functional medicine.

apocolst420, that is quite interresting to me because I found out last month that my immune system is barely functioning. I have had pnuemonia 7 times in the past 3 years. I've been hospitalized twice and was in ICU once. I have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, OCD and a generalized anxiety disorder. I can't help but wonder if there's a connection. I find it worth looking into. Thanks for the info.

It does not focus on the disease because Dr. Hyman says that is pointless because the cause is not homogeneous. There are many causes and he covers the 7 fundamental systems including nutrition, digestion, inflammation, hormones, metabolism, stress and detoxification. Mental illness is not mental illness, it is a biological disorder within the body which alters the brain and results in "mental" dysfunction, he never said that the peoples SYMPTOMS do not exist. He said there is a biological cause for those symptoms but his main focus is the fraud of psychiatry which is myth.

Psychiatry is based on myth and the medications do not address the cause therefore have a 0% success rate. The only way to understand "mental" illness is to look to biology. 60% of people with IBS have a psychiatric disorder, 1/3 of all depressed patients have a folic acid deficiency, an autoimmune disorder can cause OCD, these are examples of biological causes to mental illnes

@bestlives Those problems which arrise within our biology have a deep impact on our mentality, but are overlooked in modern psychiatries fallacy of focusing on the "MIND", which is entirely subjective. The entire diagnosis and prescribing of medication is done by guesswork and assumptions that not only these diseases are more then a group of symptoms, but are merely just chemical imbalances, which can be fixed by prescribing harmful medication. @bestlives Nobody has been cured by psychiatric medications, because the medications are not treating diseases, SSRI's merely change the brains chemistry artificially to create an effect which does not address the cause of a chemical imbalance. 95% of serotonin is made in the gut, not the brain, in fact the gut-brain connection is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle to understanding mental illness, if the integrity of the gut is compromised, the whole body can suffer. Just one more example.

Ultimately, I would reccommend you read "The Ultramind Solution" by Dr. Mark Hyman, which presents a wealth of information focusing on the underlying cause of all disorders. Not all cases of OCD are associated with this, but presented in the book is a map to figure out how biology relates to it. The whole idea of this is what matters.
