  • She needs to audition for Wicked....

  • I like her voice, but i dont loke this song for her. but she really can sing.

  • her voice doesnt have the rawness that this song needs. but she cansing. but i much prefer a more raw voice. but she can belt!!

  • I've heard so many different recordings of this song, and all I can say is, I really like her! She could've been better in a few songs, but this song is a really difficult one to sing, and she pulled it off... LOVED the ending...

And there was something about her looks (and maybe once in a blue moon, her diction) that reminded me just a tad of a weaker Eden Espinosa... But she was very good :D

  • weve just found a new elphaba for london to replace rachel when she leaves

  • Comment removed

  • Oh also, can everyone STOP using Idina as the best?!?! Sure she is great, but UNTRAINED to the max, SUPER inconsistent, and there are people MUCH better out there that have performed this.

  • 1) Are the judges coked out? Cause this is one of the worst performances of this song. 2) If screwing up your eyes allows you to "act" and "sing" then continue to do so...cause obviously fixing the eyes didn't do anything for the performance....3) A hard song? Sure, maybe, as crazy impossible as the judge and the performer made it sound....no...

  • @maferrara1 Having had the privilege to work with Janna I know how exceptionally talented she is. She executed this song smashingly!

  • ugh I wanted Janna to win so badly!!

  • KILLER high F at 2:09.

  • I thought it was pretty good, live and all. :) For me, I personally prefer Idina's version, but this was a great performance.

  • love the eyes! good job! :)

  • You guys CANNOT compare her or anyone to Idina. At all. Everyone has their OWN TAKE on this song.

I quite liked her voice on this song, her low notes are so strong and goregous. Good emotion... Like a youthful, bright timbre'd Elphaba.

  • Meh. The vocals weren't bad (anyone who expects her to reach the volume/vocal levels of Idina or Kerry are fooling themselves) but her acting is so over the top it takes away from the passionate nature of the song and just makes it silly.

  • She's good but I think she's too happy for the song.

  • umm, it's okay but it's not even as good as Lea Michele's version. But it was okay

  • very good attempt sounded pretty great

  • Janna was amazing!!!

  • I agree with mikyfdh compared to idina kinda horrible

but the song in general is good.

  • compared to idina menzel? horrible

    just as a song? amazing

  • who said exactly when right after johns comment "well they didd'nt give you dancing boys but they gave you wind!"

that was so funny and true!

  • i dont like it, i have to go listen to idina cuz i can not have her version stuck in my head

  • Janna is the best Idina was good but Janna version of Defying Gravity was the performance of the night the best of the best Janna!!!!!!!

  • fior all ur people who hate janna for this performence!

    umm... SHE AWSOME!

this was the highlight of all her performences in HDYSAPLM!

  • she keeps dropping her voice and its killing me ....

  • i had chills although i didn't want to....great performance!

  • At the beginning, was that ALW?

  • Yup!! He was on this show a lot.

  • i like idina's menzels version.

  • who is this? and this is NOT from How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria so where IS it from?? DEFYING GRAVITY (!!!) check out Kerry Ellis who just left the London cast of Wicked after an AMAZING 2 and a half years of playing Elphaba!!

  • This is from the Canadian HDYSAPLM

  • i Would rather look up IDINA MENZEL!

  • shes great too

but have u heard kerry live??

    :O !!! <3

  • no i have not heard kerry live!

but im pretty sure she sounds really good!

    haveu heard IDINA live though!

    IDina is really good!

    BETTER THEN ANY OTHER ELPHIE!

and then after IDINA i would pick kerry as my 2nd best elphie!

  • @underwood1232

i actually hate Idina's Interpretation of this song and she is my least favorite elphaba. everyone has their own take on the role and no one is better than the other.

  • Good performance but I preferred Samantha Barks's version

  • am i the only one who thinks she sucked? the acting was unnatural and over the top, even for theater. and her voice was totally wrong for the song. and don't even get me started on her outfit. what was she trying to be? batwoman? i couldn't wait for it to stop. people shouldn't be allowed to do the song execpt for idina menzel, she owns the song like no one can!

  • The contestants were forced to wear curtain colours every week, it wasn't her choice. I disagree with your opinion, but your opinion is yours alone after all, so I won't bother arguing with you on that. Just figured I'd clarify the outfit thing.

  • I definitly agree...Her voice doesn't have enough belt for this song, and she can't hit all the notes the way Idina or Kerry can. But the contestants on HDSAPLM were told which songs to sing, and had their costumes assigned each week, so it's not her fault.

  • i agree she's CRAP

  • I'm a huge Wicked fan, and that's exactly why I LOVE this performance. She's one of the few people I've seen who nails the acting, and that's JUST as important as the singing. Not to mention there's not a bad note in this performance.

Sure, other people can belt better, but that's not the most important part of musical theatre. This girl is brilliant.

  • I feel like she's singing through her nose and screaming...

  • i love defying gravity for so many resons but the main reason why is because its a powerful and strong message too all

how ever when this woman performed it i want that fond of it

she had her moments but i just didnt like it that much

  • I think that she has a powerful voice when she was belting.... I just wish she belted through "So if you care..." to the end.... but I liked her voice

  • not a very good shot at it... but she did good at everything else. i wish she had done this differently. it just.. wasnt right.

  • wicked!!! lol ! ive sang this before on stage coz im a actress, singer and dancer! lol x

  • It's a good attempt but I think she's trying too hard with the acting and her singing doesn't flow.

  • urgh - she destroyed dg!

    i hope she didnt win.

its a hard song - so dont sing it - it just got wrecked, she wouldnt get to play elphie she is too nice and you need to belt and you need to so precise in so many of the songs elphie has to sing which she doesnt have.

  • she didn't win, she came in second and looked really shocked and pissed off about it :P

  • is this in america, cause they did how to solve a problem like maria in u,k it was so good, she is really good. :)xx

  • I believe this is in Canada. :)

  • i think she is great!

  • I'm Old Greg!!!!!

  • shes too "nice" to play elphie, thats why shes in a maria contest!

  • i really hope she didnt win... this isnt really all that good... its everything that the song shouldnt be... bland and pushed...

  • She could play Elphie i would see her

  • i love it AND I LOVE WICKED

  • what does CBC mean?

  • Nice effect with the dress and she did well up to the end...

  • OMG I didn't know there was a Janna on Maria. Yay, my name has been on TV! She was very good.

  • I actually liked her performance..but I WANT THAT OUTFIT...loved it

  • Yes that's quite a stunning dress isn't it? lol

  • like a cat in a blender...

  • I have to say that was far from a star performance! I personally think that Eden Espinosa is the best Elphaba. She is such an amazing vocalist!

  • yeah i slighty disagree with you there

    Idina is and then kerry

  • I just saw this woman play Maria in Toronto....she was brilliant...long standing ovation.

  • ohhh she copped out at the climax! that's what this song is about man...

  • she didn't sing that as well as the girl samantha who was on i'd do anything o.O

  • Actually, Sam was flat until like a minute into the song. I think her version was nowhere close to this one, myself.

Then again, I agree with most of the people who saw Janna probably couldn't play Elphaba in a Wicked production. I love Janna, but she's more about the acting and less about the belting here, and Wicked demands a fair bit of the latter.

  • yeh but this girl was flat at the most important part at the end so....

    i preferred sam tbh

each to their own and all though

  • RUBBISH!

  • I'm sorry but that was just aweful and horrible to listen to!!! AAAARGGHHH! Give me Idina or Kerry!!!!

  • Yeah, she is no Idina but she's good.

  • yeah but who is idina really, no one can top her! haha

  • I agree. Kerry puts up a great fight though and to be honest she was (in my opinion) much better in Chess than Idina.

    xoxo

  • shes ok but shes not going for wicked shes going for the sound of music so yea..but btw she looked like no good deed at the end..lol

  • wow that sucked compared to idina adn kerry ellis sorry i didnt like it

  • WOOOO!!! i absolutely love janna! she is very talented

  • Ya, this was her best performance, wasn't it? I used to LOVE her version, but then I heard the original version, and now I don't find her as good. But I am now officially obsessed with this musical. (Wicked.)

  • She's pretty good, but still nothing compared to Idina.

  • True, NOTHING compared, but If she can't play Maira, try out for Elphaba!!!!!! I'd like to hear her sing No Good Deed

  • sam barks version of this song on Id do anything was so much better

  • wow sghe is amazign

i mean nothign compared to IDINA or nethign like that but still she has abn amazing voice and i think the only major thing that is defernt if the musical score..they cahnged it alot she is good

    :D GO GIRL

  • watch Sam Barks' version of this song. its brilliant

  • i was gonna try out for this show, but I was all pregnant..

I would have liked to have it bigger sound.. but overall good performance..

  • Janna is brilliant. Like mestee said... this a nearly flawless performance.

  • no one can say somthing bad about this

  • As much as I loved Janna, and thought she should have won, I wasn't that impressed by this performance...this is a hugely powerful song, and she didn't quite do it justice...

  • I don't like the outfit.

  • It wasn't America - it was Canada - and they did it because they were bringing the show to Toronto, and needed to find a Maria.

  • She was okay, but I liked Samantha's version of this song on the show I'd Do Anything a lot more - it was much better.

  • why has everyone said this was wrong? She is good but i dont like her version of this song. once you've seen idina menzel's version nothing comes close.

  • her voice sounds a little weak.

  • Wow!

  • It's REALLY too bad she didn't win. She's perfect for Maria. This performance was incredible. Always takes my breath away.

  • janna should have won she has a better voice than elicia

  • On American Idol, he didnt like davids eyes lmao.

  • sorry really don't enjoy her voice kinda reminds me of finger nails on a chalk board

  • She sounds a little but like Shoshana Bean here.

  • What those who criticize this performance also need to remember is that she prepared this song for performance in less than one week. This is not Idina Menzel or Shoshana Bean who had weeks and months of rehearsals and then performances to sound as great as they did before most of the viewing public heard/saw them.

  • Listen to Samantha's on I'd Do Anything. She had the same amount of time and performs it like a true pro.

  • I totally voted for her to win, can't wait for tonite, this song is amazing I love Wicked

  • She is so amazing!

  • She is my favorite I want her to win

  • She is my favorite, she always has been. I love her. I didn't get to watch the results from the top 4..anyone know who was eliminated..and who is left? PLEASE RESPOND, I REALLY WANT TO KNOW! Thanks to whoever may reply

  • I think Marissa was eliminated... Janna is still in it. I hope she wins!!!!

  • ok, thanks so much. I hope Janna wins too, I love her

  • Does anyone know if they will be doing a version of this show in the U.S?

  • It's from C-A-N-A-D-A CANADA people

  • Sadly, this was the last of her great performances, since her performances of "California Dreamin" (but yesterday, but last sunday) and whatever number she did last night were lacklustre! I have a feeling she'll be in the bottom 3 this week, meaning she might end up being eliminated.

It's amazing how she's went from being the frontrunner, to being in 2nd or 3rd place in terms of performance quality! Who would've thought Jayme and Elicia would've improved so much in such a short period of time

  • top two actually. crazy! agreed that california dreamin wasn't her best, but it was also a terrible song in the first place. she's still perfect for this role.

  • Im well confussed lol XD

Just seen this clip, firstly, i think she was amazing :D and looks like a fab maria!

But what is this? Is it the same show as the english one but in america or what?

They finding a maria for broadway?

    Please help me :)

  • It's Canadian, they're doing a run of The Sound of Music in Toronto.

  • i picked her from the top 200 hundred to win it :)

  • my only thing about janna is that she has the nasty habit of giving a quick, very audible exale at the end of every note or string of notes. Its distracting for me, and it jeopardizes the note itself. but she is very good.

  • I am from Woodstock, ON and Janna's ex-singing coach is the same one that teaches me. I have to say, (in my unbiased opinion) that Janna is the best on this show! Go Janna!

  • I am totally agreeing, even if I don't have her old singing coach..I don't sing I can't but I love Janna

  • holy shit!! sweet jesus! holy shit! that kicked ass

  • WOOOOO WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When you are trained as a singer it is proper to annunciate in music. Also sometimes it is very difficult to sing certain consonants and vowels so you change it a tad so that it is still the word, except much easier to sing. This was gorgeous, and amazing for reality tv, and this is one of CBC's first type of show like this, and they need some help. But Janna is the best among them and has worked hard for everything she is and does.

  • She did a great job.

  • Part of the problem with reality TV is that now regular people think they know what it takes to be a performer like this. But they don't. Somehow there is this idea that anyone can be a performer, but they can't It takes years of work, and dedication and talent. Though it is a reality of the business to be criticized, it is acceptable from people who know what they are talking about. But unfortunately most of the general public only have a superficial understanding of it. Janna is great!

  • I love Janna!!

  • they should never do this song for t.v. reality

  • I'm pretty sure the pros are expected to properly pronounce words (there is, after all, a 't' in 'gravity'). That does not mean they should sound British.

I am not a singer, but to me it all sounds great. If any notes are off its not by much and probably has to do with the recording or something. I only say this because the judges were not afraid to be harsh that night and they agreed with the audience... the performance sounded incredible live. I even heard Elicias singing teacher say as much.

  • and what were the judges listening too??? poor!!!! 17 yr old sam from i'd do anything sang this far better!!!!!!

  • sam was a worthless excuse for an actress. theres more to performing than seeing how high your belt can go.

  • why was she doin "gravity" in a british accent i.e pronouncin the 'tee' then going "but you caaaan't pull me down" in an american accent?? 1:10?? this is wot u get for canada copying a british show!!

  • maybe thats just the way she does it.

  • WIcked is NOT a british show. It is A-MER-I-CAN. As in, from the USA.

  • never said it was a british show... i was simply saying in america they sing it as "defying gravvviee" compared to london cast singing it "defying gravvittteee"... and i was simply wondering why she mixed the two one minute going from an american way of sayin to the british way?? suppose she is canadian like.... and as for the wicked is not a british show i never said that... how to solve a problem like maria was a british show and canada have copied it... chill out jesus!!

  • No, I am God, not Jesus. :-) Sorry. I thought you meant Wicked, not the TV show.

  • weak...
