I have the active version on my 12 string and I cant express how much I love it! Before it was a fishman neo-d and then some crappy dean markley humbucker. The sound is just superb and the string balance is wonderful!
had this pickup installed in a taylor acoustic today by charlie chandler (guitar-xperience) and it's every bit as good as this video suggests! Definitely worth playing a guitar with various pick up types installed to hear the difference for yourself as often its a matter of personal taste rather than which is 'better'.
You must read this. Once you have started there is no turning back a little ten year old girl was raped and murdered in 1945. Her body was not found until 1947. Then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. The dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. If you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos in30 minutes the dead girl will appear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. Well you better start to copy and paste
@arthur84 The M1a is a little bit different as it will help pick up resonation from the guitar helping it give a blend of the straight magnetic pickup and the guitar's natural sound. Here's the test. When you tap on the body or on the pickup itself, it picks up that sound. Slightly different than a straight magnetic pickup. Agreed, not as good as a straight mic'd setup.
shit if i wouldve known you could just drop a pickup in the soundhole i wouldve done that. but its kind of cool having an acoustic guitar with a p-90 from an epi casino in it.
Also this video was a test of the LR Baggs Para DI not the M-1. Those who have seen it at Fingerpick Magazine (the original source) understand that and that we found the Para DI lacking compared to better preamps. Doug
If you went to the site that actually created this original video, Fingerpick Magazine in the Guitar Pickup section, which was up loaded (stolen) without permission, all of your questions would be anwered. There are a lot of Fingerpick Magazine videos on YouTube that have been pirated that generate many questions, all which are answered in detail at the original source. Doug
What's the point of using a magnetic pickup on a acoustic guitar? The bronze wrap isn't magnetic, and the instrument sounds like a hollow electric. Does it even have any body sensitivity?
@arthur84 I agree totally. These pickups always sounded cruddy to me. They're only picking up the core of the string. Taylor's Expression system is probably the best one I've heard. They've gotten rid of that piezo plinkyness but it still has that annoying glassy high end sound. I haven't heard a good example of the Ibeam system.
@darkknight91 Taylor's expression is great, personally i think the b-band soundboard & bridge piezo with the bass/treble crossover captures any guitar's sound most accurately. People don't seem to realize that the sound a magnetic pickup produces is not any sound an instrument is capable of producing acoustically.
I've heard/read a lot of positive reviews of this Baggs M1 "revolutionary" M1 pickup. I'm in a position of immediate need to "electrify" two of my acoustic guitars. Frankly, if this is what I can expect from the M1, I'm not impressed at all. The bottom end sound in this video is garbage. I was under the (false?) impression that the M1 was capable of reproducing the clean, natural, acoustic effects and sound of my guitars. Apparently I have been mislead. The guitar sounds muddy and dead.
i have had this pickup for 3 days now and for me it sounds shit..........a very hollow boxy sound........but im trying to work it out in different ways for a better sound because apparently everyone thinks its great...........maybe in a few weeks if it still sounds crap i will sell it and stick to the condenser microphone.......i live in hope
@ylju it's meant for live sound. of course it sounds terrible compared to a condensor mic, which is completely impractical for live sound if your band are playing at much of a volume.
@ylju maybe its your guitar. I went through the anguish of searching for the right pickup for my guitar and wasting a bunch of money. i think it comes down to the axe in the end
I used this for awhile. The sound is great but if you hit the cover with a pick it makes a very annoying clicking noise while playing. I went to something else finally.
Too many to go into here. Dearmond 210, Gibson P90 stuck in the sound hole. Couple other sound hole pickups not cheap. Now a Baggs I beam. I seem to like but havent tried it out in a gig yet. The Fishman active humbucker is excellent is not as powerful but just turn up the amp or PA but its very transparent and balanced and no pick click.
Wow, fantastic playing, just ordered one of these for my epi hummingbird, due to the rave reviews and the advantage of not having to mess w/ the bridge (my action is perfect). I hope it sounds 1/2 as good as yours on the martin. This makes me want to buy a thumbpick, but I'm so used to bare fingers, its gonna be tough for me to learn. You've got a real Kenny Sultan groove going.!
hey guys, can anyone recommend an acoustic pickup? cos im not familiar with acoustic pickup brands or anything so yea..
additional info: i just want to add a good pickup to one of my medium range acoustics.. i wouldnt wanna mess wrongly with the expensive ones. Is it a bad/stupid idea to add a good pickup to a lousy guitar? its a J.D. by marvell guitar i got from a small music store in brisbane.. its not fantastic but good enough to play at a normal gig.
It's actually standard tuning, but dropped down a whole step: DGCFAD, so when the capo is on the 3rd fret, in this song, you're actually in "F".
Of course, you can just capo the 1st fret in standard tuning if you're not dropping down, but it will feel and sound a bit different, and the spacing is tighter. :)
i see all the great reviews people give the M1...I owned one for about a year and a half and absolutely hated it. It was the worst sounding pickup I have heard to date. It made my Martin OM-18v sound like an Applause plastic-back. The I-beam, however, is an amazing pickup! For the non-destructive installer it's highly recommended.
It isn't the best right out the box but if you apply the right kind of effects processing, drop the mids and add a tiny bit of reverb it sounds far more natural and they are less feedback prone than a lot of pickups.
The problem is you need the right gear to really make it sing but it sings more nicely than most pickups once enough tweaking has been done.
I don't know anything about pickups but I know I don't want ANY holes drilled in my guitar. Does this pickup, which sounds great, install without drilling holes? I'm okay with wires hanging out.
and what's even better, if you have a Larrivee, you can STILL put in the end pin jack without drilling anything, because they pre-drill their endpins to 1/2" already!
do you need a preamp to amplify the sound? Or do you plug it straight into an amp?
