  • I love a drummer she's great . Good play girl ofcourse I do like Billy Preston as well .

  • Mike does anyone justice by covering their songs

  • Something a bit safe and middle-class about the whole thing. Can imagine soccer moms 'boogying' with safe middle-class 'Hey, I'm rocking it pretty hard, aren't I' faces.

  • That's right! What's going on with the economy? GREAT song.

  • amazing music! omg and look the great talented female drummer!! yay girlpower!

    love you mr mcdonald! xxxxx

  • wooaaaahhhhh........stunning stuff.

  • At first I thought he was going to say "FUUUUUUCK"...but he said father.

  • Maravilhoso! Música preferida que acompanha-me ao longo dos anos....São meus cantores Norte Americanos que tenho muita admiração.Parabéns!!!

  • I am going to see him tonight, I can't wait!!

  • I'd like to know what planet the 5 who didn't like this are from. Michael and Billy, two legends. There'll never be another B-3 genius like Billy.

  • People, I don't think I could say enough about "Baby Girl" kickin' them skins. So, So groovy.>>>> R.I.P. Mr. Preston we will miss you, and all the love you have given to us thru music

  • Oh my, my, my!! Two great icons - the late Billy Preston, your music will live on. Michael McDonald: just keep singing...hope to see u in Vegas.

  • thank you for posting this beautiful unforgetable song! Im 55 and remember this song touching my heart deeply when it first came out, we had just lost my my beautiful saint of a brother in vietnam....He's the one who bought the album for us before he left on his tour of duty. Listening to this song again just now brought tears to my eyes along with all the beautiful memories of back then.

  • Billy Preston died a year after this recording. R.I.P legend

  • Michael belongs to us......white baby boomers What is the matter with YOU. The very idea that blacks have taken over??? Michael is OUR Caucasian Prince forever and forever because of the lost tribes OF israel, 12....

  • Michael McDonald got a black voice. He's white, but he sings lika brotha.

  • @amonnaheadbutcha black, white, red, yellow, purple, brown...he's just a brother with soul, period.

  • yes - real music, rare these days

  • Classic musicianship at it's best on a song that applies as much now as it did in the 60's...

  • Thanks for uploading!

  • Wow, that was a treat. Thanks for the upload. Peace

  • What a magnificent performance this is, Marvin would have been proud, tears in my eyes when I hear this now means my love of soul is from the heart. Many thanks for posting this up

  • Michaels lead "father father" is just magic :)

  • Everyone has their own taste, but I believe that Donny perfected that song. I really didn't care for Marvins version even though he wrote it. Donny was a master at perfecting songs. I think that Donny also did a better job at performing Stevie Wonders' Superwoman. This version is definitely my next choice. McDonnald is a stone singer who has the ability to make you feel what he's saying. That is the definition of a soul singer.

  • two Kings!

  • whos the sistah on the drums?

  • Comment removed

  • Doesn't this just make you want to jump up and boogie with it...sure it does :)

  • Incredible musician's all around

  • michael sings this song better than anyone i have ever heard....he is so amazingly talented...wow....

  • She is super on the drums. I play too. She did not drop one note. She is a living metronome! Listen to the 16th note ghost notes on the HH. Double crash cymbals perfect off set. As well as the snare. Man she got rhythm! And the ending... She leads no one falls! She is the foundation. So who is she?

  • @m6255

Its Yvette "Baby Girl" Preyer, she is just awesome. People that dont understand that THIS is how to play the drums, dont know what they are talking bout. Such a groove!!!

  • she tearing that drum apart

  • He only got to Father, Father, and I welled up. lol

  • SHES PERFECT...GREAT JOB ON THE DRUMS..YO GOOOOO GIRL ,KEEEP IT REAL....

  • Sing Michael! Sing Billy. I can't believe I missed this performance. This is sooo damn good.

  • wow this is fantastic

  • That start "Father Father" is just magic, this is worldclass ,period end of story

  • There must be some kind of mistake. The views number is missing one comma and three zeros. Only 147,945 views for brilliance like this is mindboggling.

  • Yvette Preyer is beautiful

  • Mark Douthit on sax at the end!

  • The drummer is phenomenal !!!

  • The woman drummer kicks ass I saw him live and it was one of the best gigs Ive ever seen

  • I am not religious but when I listen to stuff like this I truly wonder if there is a God and does he,she love music!

You and Daryl Hall, John Oates..would love to hear and see a vdeo with the three of you...wish you were a guest at Live From Daryl's House!!! Right on brother..Patti

  • Doesn't get much better than this!

  • Couldn't agree more! First time I heard it, my heart stopped beating!

  • Yes--especially Michael at the start...wow. Pure soul! Patti

  • Two legends gets no better than that.

  • what a music!

    great voice.

  • gran cancion.......grandes musicos.....

  • Grey haired, blue eyed soul at its best. Michael M with Billy Preston...wow.

  • To ZoomZoommoh: "What you said!" ... My feelings exactly. This is just beautiful. Watching Billy Preston sing at 2:35 brought tears to this old man's eyes.

It is interesting that there are so many negative, disrespectful, and even racial comments on YouTube music videos; and yet, when we see Biily and Michael singing together - "We've got to find a way to bring some love in here today" - the comments here read like a group of good friends just talking and enjoying the music. Wonderful!

  • @MrTwinclarinets

couldnt agree more with you my friend. Well spoken.

    greetz spritZ

  • Best version since Donny Hathaway live '72. Great combo of Michael and Billy! (RIP)

  • ol girl killen da drums doe

  • ...so much talent !

  • Hello Goose Bumps? Marvin must have been smiling down when they did this... Added to my favorites... Thank you SO much for posting this one!

  • Michael and Billy's rendition of this song is one of the best I've heard in my over 50 yrs of listening to different kinds of music.

  • YEA Doobies Live at SPAC 8/18/2009

  • Billy a sad loss for sure.... An awesome coming together. Love Michael. Classic tune.

  • What a great collaboration Billy and Michael. It speaks volumes, no doubt.

  • Simply fantastic!

  • Great rendition . This is one of my all time favorite songs but certainly has what I consider some of the greatest lyrics ever written. @ 5:25 I dig the sax and the drummer

  • Classic song! Great introduction given by Michael McDonald. He describes this song as "a prayer for peace" .... fantastic

    video! 10 stars! thank you.

  • Drummer is a tough woman:D

  • This has to be one of Billy's last performances

  • Billy, Baby girl, Drea, Bernie, Chazz and the rest of the band, what a spectacular job and what can I say about Michael...they don't come any hotter than him!!!

  • great video, it is wonderful to see Mr. Billy Preston (q.e.p.d)

  • Meraviglioso

  • Mark Douthit on the sax solo.

  • ça chante , ça joue ! quel feeling ! quel groove ! ça c'est de la zic !

  • Two true pro's letting it loose. They don't make em like Billy P anymore. And the drums were sensational.

  • Didnt she play with Kid Rock?

  • yes, I think so

  • Stefanie Eulinberg

  • that is NOT Stefanie....the drummer is Yvette "Baby Girl" Preyer...friend of mine!

  • I didn't say it was, I was just giving him the name he was looking for.

  • this song is amazing.its just wow...

  • Great video!

  • I beg to differ. All she is doing is keeping the groove thick and heavy.

  • Fantastic! This was the best performance ever!!!!

  • Who is this woman kicking the skins? I saw her on austin city limits. The woman is funky

  • The drummer is Yvette Preyer. She is putting it to these guys to take it to another level. Pretty impressive stuff !!

  • That drummer is tearing it up!!

  • The drummer is bangin'! Yesss!

  • 0:58 chills,

  • Every time I hear (or play) a cover of this song, the band is more or less just copping the Donny Hathaway live arrangement... and rightfully so. Donny's version can't be touched.

  • Sure, there are elements of Donny's rendition in this performance. There are also elements of Marvin Gaye's 1970 recording as well. To be fair, McD is also a keyboardist, so I imagine he was digging Donny's 1972 live recording...all the way back in 1972. Donny's performance isn't my favorite, but it was clearly an inspiration for many of today's arrangements of the song.

  • @mynameisdanno

played music for 30 years my old drummer is playing with GEORGE BENSON...this is maybe...maybe the best version ever....and the drummer has a groove you could drive a truck through......which opens up the song for the funky guitar work and the mindblowing vocals...so anything negative about this is retarded...lol.....

  • @mynameisdanno Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Especially with the accented parts and some of the passing changes. It was good nonetheless though.

  • I was in the audience when this was filmed. It was great.

  • Chills ??

  • what a pair what a shame billy passed away god must had wanted another good one up there to all the good ones he has already R.I.P

  • good combination coffee with cream!

  • White soul and Black soul have there differences, but they are real and sincere. Everyone has soul, all you have to do is look inside and be true to yourself.

  • Wow! Fantastic! Great! Really Really Good!!! Thanks...

  • I'm a pro drummer, and her fills sound awesome!!!

  • Nice performance. Also nice to see Billy, since he died under a year later. Damn, good musicians die too early!

  • Betterdayz. Get lost.

Yvette is an awesome drummer, with immense groove. She'll play whatever she wants to, if you want to do it your own way, thats fine.

  • Good video wow Michael sing so good.

thanks for posting this up for us.

God Bless you and Blessing to all your family.

  • first of all i am a minister n a professional musician and drummer and never said she wasnt good i said her fills dont fit the song she is just goin off with no reference to the songs tempo its sounds good but its not correct thats all im saying

  • She has her own style, no doubt about it... She's a great player but the mix doesn't help much. The snare is WAY too high in volume....

  • dats wat i was sayin she is good i wasnt takin dat from her but she is tryin to show off to much and leavin the song

  • I'm not sure if being a professional musician gives you the authority to declare a certain "correctness" factor to music. I'm also a musician and I happen to think it fits quite well. They aren't my favorite fills, no, but trying to compare this groove with Marvin Gaye's early 70s sound won't work. It's pointed, it's screaming, it's emotional, and I'd say both McD and the drummer are just getting into it. We all have our opinions. Who is actually "correct" is a silly point to argue.

  • @dootsmasta I agree, but all of us musicians do what feels good, and it's her feel, and also let's remember the backing that Marvin had.....but the most important thing is it's music, and the Love for music, and we should all RESPECT....Musical talent....the last thing is...I know she hits those skins for alot of FAMOUS ARTIST.....The Girl Get's It Done......

  • @betterdayz86

there is no correct in music, just interpretation you probably know a lot more than we musicians about the Gospel, but, your interpretation changes as YOU GROW SPIRITUALLY, this woman is way over your head, and I say that with all respect for you as you would probably be for her Gospel interpretations. Andy S. AMEN...

  • @betterdayz86

the Drummer is powerful, but she has no sensitivity to sound.

If you mean that, I agree. Her beat is too simple and far from all of the sound's nuances.

I won't talk about correctness. I just don't like her play.

  • @betterdayz86 I'm a bass player and have been playing for over 30 years. My relationship with the drummer is as a man and wife. The drummer on this song is a total compliment to the other musician and the song.

  • we`re all children of the same god, i guess;

    EXCEPT FOR BETTERDAYS; sorry,

  • Love it

  • Wasn't sure I was gonna like this version, going by the intro, but it's FAB.Really Good, Thanks.x

  • Another great version,.ktf.

  • Really good

  • Lovely. x

  • brill video

  • A real nice version of a wonderful song

  • I like Mike McDonald, but this just ain't right, IMO.

  • Yes!!

    Yvonne,Bob and Kazandra

    Ava,Illinois USA

  • I love Billy, check him out singing "My sweet Lord"

  • that drummer fills dont fit the song mid temp songs and fast fill might sound tight but its not good or proper music

  • There is a difference between not agreeing with someone's artistic choice (in this case, the drummers) but as a musician I take exception to your statement that "its [sic] not good or proper music." Are you the Music Police? What are your credentials? That is such a dismissive statement. I'd like to think of musicians being open-minded and respectful of diversity. Perhaps you are not a musician.

  • The word you might have been looking for is "traditional" and not "proper" - traditionally, a deep soul groove like this was barely anything but straight-ahead time from the drummer. Maybe I would have chosen different fills, but no doubt, there's some energy in the groove and the drummer doesn't have to sit out on that.

  • Whats the name of de lady behind the drums:O

  • I would like to know that too cause she sure sounds great.

Ah well, everybody sounds good in this video! ;-)

  • Her name is Yvette"Baby Girl" Preyer and she is just an awesome drummer no question about it she's a groove master! betterdayz86 WTF are you talking about you wouldn't know a groove if it bit you in the ass if you don't dig her playin' IMO!!

  • another eyesweller/thanxxxz again smooth-doots

  • wow!that song is amazing!im speachless!

  • That chick on the drums is gettin it!

  • Whats the name? :P

  • WOW

  • Michael is the GREATEST! He hits that high note and it sends chills through me! YOU GO! Yes Sir, I'm feeling ALL of that!!
