Measuring depth by dropping like that ain't so good, maybe for a narrow band, I guess a 30ft cliff vrs 40ft cliff not much error.

It's not a constant speed, it's accelerating at 9.8m/s/s until air resistance holds it at the objects "terminal velocity"
