That is because we have been programmed by the PC media to fear words. I will always remember a black friend of mine at work who being the same age as me used the term black for himself but when talking to the "intelligentsia" he would struggle the phrase African American (he was Sudanese before he was American!) out. And I could see his discomfort; he wanted to use the simple one syllable word he used with friends!
