They never said anything about The Beatles. Their statement was about Beatlemania.
And I'm not certain that The Beatles were necessarily the best band to come out of England. I can think of at least three English bands that I hold in the same regard. In no particular order:
:: I read somewhere tha Joe wasn't refering to the beatles, he was talking about a band that covered beatles' songs, this band was called beatlemania and their slogan was: "Not the beatles, but a very good personification" And he (Joe) wrote that as a protest against the things without substance and un original copies ::
although it doesn't really matter to anyone what anyone else thinks.. im sure you can't truly believe the beatles are the best thing to happen to planet earch... i mean, sure they aren't bad.. but the hype over the beatles is unjustified in my opinion.. there's not much spectacular about them except cute catchy tunes... there's other bands out there that offer more..
no doubt they were talented but they were a fad which is what that statement means yes theyre influential without a doubt but not the best... that would be zeppelin sex pistols preist or the clash

It was The Clash's way of saying "We aren't the fucking Beatles" and the idea of worshipping a pop band was long dead.
