@magpie307 cant seem to send pics so ill explain best i can ,the part is called the top but is actually the err middle of it ,the 3 legs hold a glass funnel (like a huricane lamp) and the base part (where the bump is on the bottom of the part you have ) usually has a vase like base for decoration, a small burner (usually whale oil) was placed onto the ceramic disk ,basically rendering the flame wind proof,so i suppose its one of the first safety lamps hope that helps mate

I agree with superdave, it's part of an automobile engine thermostat. I learned the hard way that you can't change a thermostat without in winter without chancing cracking the ceramic cover.
im just speculating cause i play too much video games and have a wild imagination... but perhaps its the top of a landmine that blew up. Probably unlikely since it would be destroyed... but i woke up today with the intention to set my mark on the world. And it shall be this comment.
